EXPLORER PROGRAM
| Know a high school student interested in healthcare? Explorer program starting soon. . . If you know a budding nurse, physician or therapist in the last three years of high school, let them know about the Healthcare Explorer program at St. Elizabeth. Applications for the October through March program at St. Elizabeth Edgewood are due by Friday, Sept. 26.
Healthcare exploring is open to all sophomores through seniors who want to learn more about specific healthcare careers. Students meet for 2½ hours every month for six months and learn about 20 different careers, from Nurse's Aid and physician to paramedic and pharmacist. They'll hear about these careers firsthand from those practicing today and they'll also obtain salary information, job outlook and educational preparation details. Students will take tours of various areas of the hospital, where they'll be able to get some hands-on experience using demonstration models of things like laparascopic surgery and lab testing. More than 350 students have completed the program here since 2003. Each year, about 50 to 60 students are accepted into the program.
To fill out an explorer application, go online to www.northcentralkyahec.org. All students must also obtain a TB skin test and flu shot once accepted into the program and must provide immunization records and attend orientation. The cost of the program is $20, but scholarship assistance is available. |
