Congratulations to the girls varsity cross country team for a big FIRST PLACE win this past weekend at the Grant Co. Homecoming Candidates-If your club is interested in sponsoring a homecoming candidates, see Mrs. Cassidy (Room 325) by Thursday September 19. Please make sure your candidates are available for the parade, football game and dance.    The cost to enter a candidate is $25.   Candidates will have a few fun duties and responsibilities during homecoming week so it is important that Mrs. Cassidy receives names as soon as possible. The Homecoming Candidates must attend a meeting after school in Room 141 on Wednesday, September 24 after school to discuss parade, game and dance procedures.

Homecoming Parade- The theme for this year is Hollywood and we are asking  float/candidate vehicle to decorate as a different movie themes (for example, Pioneer Pride is doing a float with The Wizard of Oz theme).  If you are interested in participating in the parade (other than having a candidate), please let Ms. Lewis (141) know by Friday September 26. The Parade is Thursday, October 2.  The Parade Policies are in force (available on the school website). Parade participants need to arrive at Summit View no later than 5:45 PM..  The parade will begin promptly at 6:30.  Prizes will be awarded for best float!    

Powderpuff Game Immediately following the parade.  Admission will be $2 for students and $3 for adults.  All teams have already been filled. There will be a powderpuff meeting for players and coaches, on Thursday, September 17 after school.  The $10 participation fee is due on September 17 at the meeting.   

Homecoming Game  Candidates will be introduced at halftime on Friday, October 3.     

Homecoming Dance  SATURDAY October 4 from 8-11 PM at the RADISSON HOTEL IN COVINGTON.  TIckets will be $15 and go on sale September 22.  Dates from schools other than SK must have a form filled out to attend.  Pick one up by Room 207.  No tickets available at the door -- all must be presale.

Explorer program starting soon. . .

If you know a budding nurse, physician or therapist in the last three years of high school, let them know about the Healthcare Explorer program at St. Elizabeth. Applications for the October through March program at St. Elizabeth Edgewood are due by Friday, Sept. 26.

 

Healthcare exploring is open to all sophomores through seniors who want to learn more about specific healthcare careers. Students meet for 2½ hours every month for six months and learn about 20 different careers, from Nurse's Aid and physician to paramedic and pharmacist. They'll hear about these careers firsthand from those practicing today and they'll also obtain salary information, job outlook and educational preparation details.

Students will take tours of various areas of the hospital, where they'll be able to get some hands-on experience using demonstration models of things like laparascopic surgery and lab testing. More than 350 students have completed the program here since 2003. Each year, about 50 to 60 students are accepted into the program.

I'm sure many of you have seen recent news headlines regarding the progression of Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) toward our area.  Enteroviruses are very common viruses that occur seasonally in the summer and fall.  Although EV-D68 is less common than other enteroviruses, it spreads in a similar fashion through close contact with infected people. EV-D68 is associated almost exclusively with respiratory symptoms usually causing mild to severe respiratory illness.   It starts as a common cold, but can rapidly progress if there is a pre-existing respiratory condition like asthma.  There is no specific treatment for EV-D68 and like many infections it will be mild and self-limiting, requiring only symptomatic treatment.

To help reduce the risk of infection with EV-D68, the Health Department recommends students and staff should:

• Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds, especially after changing diapers if soap and water are not available use an alcohol based hand sanitizer.
• Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
• Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and put your used tissue in the waste basket. If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve or elbow, not your hands.
• Avoid kissing, hugging, and sharing cups or eating utensils with people who are sick.
• Stay home when feeling sick, and consult their health care provider as needed. Children with cold like symptoms that experience difficulty breathing should consult their health care provider for further evaluation.
• The Health Department is also asking schools to disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as handrails and doorknobs, especially if someone is sick.
• In addition, we encourage staff and students, especially those with chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma, to be vaccinated against influenza as soon as the vaccine becomes available. Getting the flu along with an upper respiratory virus such as EV-D68 could be very serious for someone with chronic respiratory diseases.
