RELIVE THE FUN OF THE 2014 CHRISTMAS WALK

Geneva officially ushered in the holiday season with the annual Christmas Walk celebration Dec. 5 in the downtown. Now you can relive the excitement with our online photo gallery.

The festival featured the arrival of Santa Lucia, the first candy cane of the season, and Santa Claus lighting the Great Tree. Patrons also enjoyed roasted chestnuts, strolling carolers, a live nativity, shopping, free carriage rides and much more.

The event showcased the Live! Windows displays on State Street and other areas of the downtown as well. Thanks to the Geneva Chamber of Commerce for putting on a fantastic event and all those who attended.

POLICE ANNOUNCE ROADSIDE SAFETY CHECK RESULTS

The Illinois State Police announced the results of a Roadside Safety Check held during the late evening hours of Dec. 5, and early morning hours of Dec. 6. The detail was conducted at 1166 E. State St. by District 2 State police along with officers from Geneva Police Department.

Alcohol is involved in nearly 40 percent of fatal crashes in Illinois. Roadside Safety Checks are designed to remove alcohol-impaired drivers, however, when other violations are observed such as driving with a suspended or revoked license, operating a vehicle without a valid registration or insurance, or safety belt violations, enforcement action may be taken. The following citations were issued at the safety check:

Violations Enforcement Activity

  • Registration offenses - 2
  • Driver's license offenses - 16
  • Occupant restraint offenses - 3
  • Driving under the influence arrests - 1
  • Other alcohol/drug arrests - 5
  • Total citations/arrests - 41
  • Total written warnings - 6

This project was funded through the Illinois Department of Transportation, Division of Traffic Safety.

MAKE SAFETY A PRIORITY WITH HOLIDAY DECORATIONS

Not sure what to get a Geneva firefighter for the holidays? The simple thought of holiday decoration safety in homes and businesses makes the perfect gift.

Each year, the Fire Department participates in the Keep the Wreath Red campaign, which serves as a constant reminder to make safety a priority when installing and displaying holiday decorations. Firefighters place a wreath decorated in red lights in front of both fire stations that remain lit 24 hours a day during the holiday season. Whenever a fire occurs that is a result of holiday decorations, a white bulb replaces a red bulb on the wreath.

While the wreath stayed red in 2013, Geneva has experienced fires in the past stemming from holiday décor. A candle placed on a fireplace mantel ignited some decorative roping and a wreath. In a different incident, a family left a candle burning overnight that later started a fire between the mantel and wall.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, December is the peak month for home candle fires. More than half of these incidents are started by candles while the other half occur when holiday decorations are left too close to a heat source.

Here are some tips on how residents can keep their home safe for the holidays:

Holiday Lights - Inspect holiday lights each year for frayed wires, bare spots and excessive kinking or wear before hanging them. Connect strings of lights to an extension cord before plugging the cord into the outlet. Keep all electrical wiring out of walkways or places where they may become pinched or worn. Read the packaging for all lights to be sure not to overload electrical circuits.

Candles - Consider using battery operated flameless candles, which can look, smell and feel like the real thing. For those using lit candles, make sure they are in stable holders and placed out of the reach of both children and pets. Do not leave lit candles unattended.

Trees - Christmas trees need to be adequately watered so they do not become a potential fire hazard. Cut about 2 inches of the trunk to expose the fresh wood for better water absorption. Place the tree away from heat sources.

Miscellaneous - Use only nonflammable decorations or flame retardant ones. Do not place wrapping paper in the fireplace because the paper can produce dangerous sparks or chemical buildup that could cause an explosion. Finally, do not block a home's address with outdoor decorations.

If residents have questions or concerns regarding fire safety this holiday season, please call the Geneva Fire Department at 630-232-2530.

PARKING DECK CONSTRUCTION REMAINS ON TARGET

Construction remains on budget and on schedule for the Third Street commuter parking deck's third tier project. Here is the latest update:

A crane will be brought in starting Dec. 10 to start installing the new third level exterior precast panels.

Flaggers will be present weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 10 to Dec. 16 on Route 31 (First Street) to keep northbound traffic moving in concert with the traffic signals at Third Street. Southbound traffic on Route 31 will be stopped periodically as trucks are unloading precast panels. Please use caution when driving through the area.

Eastbound South Street between Second Street and Route 31 will be closed to thru traffic during this same timeframe.

Walsh Construction intends to commence with precast panel installation at the northeast corner of the garage, work its way around to the south side and back to the starting point. The work is anticipated to take about three weeks, but the timeline is weather dependent.

Walsh continues to work on conduits for security cameras and lighting. Painting also is taking place as temperatures allow.

Overall, the project still is on schedule for substantial completion at the end of January, which is when the City anticipates commuters might be allowed back into the parking deck. Ancillary work will continue into the spring.

GENEVA'S BAG LEAF COLLECTION RUNS THROUGH DECEMBER

The City's vacuum fall leaf collection program has concluded for the season, but residents can still use yard waste bags to dispose of any leaves remaining in their yard in December.

Residents must place the leaves in paper yard waste bags and set the bags out at the curb on their scheduled refuse collection day. The waste hauler will pick up the bags weekly until Dec. 27.

Please note refuse stickers are not required on these yard waste bags from Dec. 1 to Dec. 27. However, only leaves must be placed in the bags. No grass or other yard waste can be mixed with the leaves.

For more information, please call the Geneva Public Works Department at 630-232-1502.

HISTORIC LOVEDAY HOUSE FEATURED IN GENEVA'S 2014 PEWTER ORNAMENT

People looking to get a jump start on their holiday shopping can purchase the City's popular pewter ornament and other merchandise that makes the perfect gift for those who live in or love Geneva.

The 2014 pewter ornament depicts the iconic Loveday House in downtown Geneva on the front and history of the home on the back. The ornament will be sold for $12 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday at City Hall, 22 S. First St. People can also "Shop The Geneva Store" on our website.

The Loveday House, 328 S. Third St., has been home to the Paper Merchant since 1990. Built in 1866 by lawyer Charles D.F. Smith, the house conforms to the fashionable Gothic Revival-style of picturesqueness and variety with its several projecting wings, high roof interrupted by dormers and the gable ends decorated with pretty trefoil-shaped vents.

Purchased by William and Louisa Loveday in 1870, the house bears the family's name. The Geneva Historical Society awarded the home a bronze plaque in 1972.

New "Geneva" merchandise available to purchase this year includes bracelets, picture frames, golf balls with tees, commemorative coins and more.

Quantities are limited. For more information, call Sherri Weitl at 630-232-7494.
