A Message from Our President

Wow, another year has flown by!  2015 was another successful year for the NHWBA and we are so grateful for the continued support of our members.  Our annual Fall Reception in October was our biggest yet and we are looking forward to celebrating the completion of the Marilla Ricker portrait that will be displayed in the State House, hopefully in the upcoming year.  Our programming and networking committees are already working on ideas for more new and relevant programs for our members, and 2016 will bring the opportunity for more members to become involved in the leadership of our organization.  After the chaos of the holiday season winds down, we hope you will join us for our post-holiday networking event at the new Foundry restaurant in Manchester on January 14.  It will be a great time to reconnect with friends and colleagues and start working on your new year's resolution to expand your networking circles. Hope to see you there!

Best regards,

Karyl Roberts Martin, President
New Hampshire Women's Bar Association

Thanks to Our Members Who Volunteered at New Horizons for New Hampshire

On December 3, 2015, several NHWBA members and friends volunteered their time at New Horizons for New Hampshire. They helped pack holiday food baskets for families in need in the Manchester area.  What a great way to spend time during the holiday season.  Thank you!

After the rush of the holiday season, join NHWBA members and friends to re-energize for the new year.  Save the date of Thursday, January 14, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. for a fun and relaxing evening.  This year, we will be collecting clean, gently used women's professional clothing for a boutique to be held at UNH School of Law on January 28, 2016.  All proceeds from the boutique will benefit Dress for Success, a non-profit that empowers women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and tools to thrive in work and in life.

Please Donate to the Marilla Ricker Portrait Fund

At this time of year, we reflect on those things for which we are truly thankful.  For many of us, one of those things is our right to practice law, but that right was not always available to women.  In 1890, women were not allowed to practice law in New Hampshire even if they were licensed in another state.  Attorney Marilla Ricker changed all that.  She filed a highly controversial lawsuit in the NH Supreme Court challenging the exclusionary practice of admitting only men to the practice of law...and won!  Petition of Ricker, 66 N.H. 207 (1890).

There are only seven portraits of women hanging in the NH State House.  In 2013, legislation was passed requisitioning a portrait of Marilla Ricker, albeit without state funding.  The NHWBA and the League of Women Voters NH have collaborated to raise funds to complete the Ricker portrait.  We are off to a great start, but we still have a long way to go!
