Table for Eight with Jeff Strelzin a Success

On September 30, 2015, several members of the NHWBA met for dinner at the Common Man Restaurant with Senior Assistant Attorney General, Jeff Strelzin, who is chief of the homicide unit of the Attorney General's Office.  They discussed a variety of issues while enjoying a meal together. Thanks to Attorney Strelzin for being our featured mentor for this Table for Eight.

Spotlight on Our Member - Emily Gray Rice

Our Spotlight this month is on Emily Gray Rice.  Attorney Rice was nominated by President Barack Obama to serve as U.S. Attorney for the District of New Hampshire.  If confirmed by the Senate, she will replace New Hampshire's acting U.S. Attorney, Donald Feith, who was appointed last spring when former U.S. Attorney John Kacavas stepped down to become legal counsel at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.
Attorney Rice is a shareholder at Bernstein Shur and is a past Marillla M. Ricker Achievement Award recipient.

Congratulations to Attorney Rice!

If you have news to share with our members, please let us know!  We love to tout the accomplishments of our members.

We take many things for granted in our busy lives.  Most of us do not give a second thought about having had the opportunity to go to law school and to practice law.  But once it was not so.  In 1890, women were not allowed to practice law in New Hampshire even if they were licensed in another state.  Attorney Marilla Ricker changed all that.  She filed a highly controversial lawsuit in the NH Supreme Court challenging the exclusionary practice of admitting only men to the practice of law...and won!  Petition of Ricker, 66 N.H. 207 (1890).

There are only seven portraits of women hanging in the NH State House.  In 2013, legislation was passed requisitioning a portrait of Marilla Ricker, albeit without state funding.  The NHWBA and the League of Women Voters NH have collaborated to raise funds to complete the Ricker portrait.  We are off to a great start, but we still have a long way to go!

As you think about what your career means to you, please consider donating to the Marilla Ricker Portrait Fund.  To review a brochure about the fundraising efforts, click here.  To donate to this worthwhile project, click here.

Campaign for Legal Services' Online Blitz a Success But Work Left to Do

The Campaign for Legal Services wishes to thank all members of the Women's Bar who participated in the first 36-Hour Online Blitz for Legal Services.  Thanks to the generous support of more than 50 individuals across New Hampshire, the Campaign exceeded its goal of raising $12,000 for civil legal aid in only 36 hours.  Funds raised by the Campaign support the work of New Hampshire Legal Assistance and the Legal Advice & Referral Center, which provide legal advice, information and representation to low-income and elderly New Hampshire residents.  The Blitz brought the Campaign closer to its annual goal, but there is still much work to be done to reach the 2015 Campaign goal of $350,000.  As you look ahead to a time of holiday celebrations and generosity, we ask that you please consider supporting legal services for the children, veterans, seniors and victims of domestic violence who turn to NHLA and LARC in their times of desperate need. To make a secure, tax-deductible gift and learn about past legal aid success stories, visit the Campaign website at www.nh-cls.org.
