Thursday, October 8, 2015

5:30 - 7:30 p.m.

Concord Country Club

Join us for our 18th Annual Fall Reception on Thursday, October 8, 2015. At the reception, we will present the 2015 Marilla M. Ricker Achievement Award to Jane E. Young, Esquire.  Ann Rice of the NH Attorney General's Office will provide the introduction.

The Ricker Award is presented annually to a woman lawyer who has achieved professional excellence, and paved the way to success for other women lawyers, advanced opportunities for women in the profession and/or performed exemplary service on behalf of women.  Attorney Young meets and exceeds all of these requirements.

Join us for a night of recognition of the achievements of Attorney Young, and for an opportunity to network with fellow attorneys and judges from across the state.  The reception is open to the public.  Hors d'oeuvres will be provided and a cash bar will be available.  At the reception, we will also present the 2015 Winnie McLaughlin Scholarship to Lyndsay Robinson, a very deserving second year student at UNH School of Law.  Additionally, a 50/50 raffle will be held to support the Winnie McLaughlin Scholarship Fund.

RSVPs are appreciated by clicking here.

Join Other NHWBA Members and Friends by Donating to the Marilla Ricker Portrait Fund

We take many things for granted in our busy lives.  Most of us do not give a second thought about having had the opportunity to go to law school and to practice law.  But once it was not so.  In 1890, women were not allowed to practice law in New Hampshire even if they were licensed in another state.  Attorney Marilla Ricker changed all that.  She filed a highly controversial lawsuit in the NH Supreme Court challenging the exclusionary practice of admitting only men to the practice of law...and won!  Petition of Ricker, 66 N.H. 207 (1890).

There are only seven portraits of women hanging in the NH State House.  In 2013, legislation was passed requisitioning a portrait of Marilla Ricker, albeit without state funding.  The NHWBA and the League of Women Voters NH have collaborated to raise funds to complete the Ricker portrait.  We are off to a great start, but we still have a long way to go!

As you think about what your career means to you, please consider donating to the Marilla Ricker Portrait Fund.  To review a brochure about the fundraising efforts, click here.  To donate to this worthwhile project, click here.

Support the Campaign for Legal Services' Online Blitz

What if you were poor and you were wrongfully denied medical care? Or you were a victim of domestic violence and had no place to go? Or you were illegally evicted from your apartment and facing homelessness?

Civil legal aid helps the most vulnerable people in New Hampshire access the justice system. The Campaign for Legal Services raises funds for two of New Hampshire's legal aid organizations, New Hampshire Legal Assistance and the Legal Advice and Referral Center. Together, NHLA and LARC helped nearly 14,000 people in 2014. Their clients are mothers, fathers, seniors, children and veterans. Without civil legal aid, and without support for the Campaign from people across the state, they would not have access to timely, knowledgeable, critical legal advice and representation.

Watch this video to learn how legal aid helped Robin, a mother of three, escape an abusive relationship.

On October 1st and 2nd, the Campaign is holding a 36-hour online Blitz for Legal Services. Click here for more information and to join in.
