Donate to the Marilla Ricker Portrait Fund

Join the NHWBA and the League of Women Voters NH to ensure that a portrait of Marilla Marks Young Ricker is installed in the New Hampshire State House.

In 2013, legislation was passed authorizing the acquisition and installation of a portrait of Marilla Marks Young Ricker in the State House.  Because no state money was allocated for the project, all funds have to be raised privately.  Therefore, the NHWBA and the League of Women Voters NH have teamed up to ensure that a portrait is painted and eventually hung in the halls of the State House in order to give public recognition to this remarkable New Hampshire native.

Marilla Ricker was the first New Hampshire woman to gain access to an organized bar when she passed the bar exam in Washington D.C. in 1882.   In 1890, she became the first woman to apply for admission to the New Hampshire bar and in Petition of Ricker, she won the right for women to practice law in New Hampshire.  In 1910, she made history when she tried to become the first woman to run for Governor.  She was denied filing papers because she was not a registered voter because she was a woman.  Ricker wrote, "I'm running for Governor in order to get people in the habit of thinking of women as Governors....  People have to think about a thing for several centuries before they can get acclimated to the idea.  I want to start the ball a'rolling."
