President's Message

We are on the cusp of my favorite time of year.  The snow banks are melting (not fast enough), and once mud season is over, all of the true signs of spring will begin to blossom. Spring is a time of growth and renewal, and it is the perfect time to take a deep breath and reflect on our personal lives, careers, families and personal passions.  NHWBA has a very full calendar of professional development and networking events planned for this spring, starting with our panel discussion with some of our past Marilla Ricker Award recipients on April 7.  We are honored and thrilled to bring together some of the most influential and inspiring women attorneys in our state for a discussion about careers, work/life balance and the practice of law.   Continuing with the work/life balance theme, our annual Work Stress Relief Clinic will return to Meredith on April 17.  Betsy Black will be returning as our guest speaker for the Saturday lunch session and we have ordered up perfect spring weather for the weekend.  On May 13, Carol Williams of Efficient Productivity Systems will help us learn how to become more efficient, organized and productive when our lives become chaotic (a daily occurrence for me!).  We hope you will join us for these exciting events!

Best regards,

Karyl Roberts Martin, President
New Hampshire Women's Bar Association

NHWBA's Annual Food Drive Starts April 13, 2015

For the seventh consecutive year, the NHWBA will be collecting food and monetary donations to help feed hungry families here in New Hampshire. From April 13th to May 11th, the NHWBA will be collecting canned or boxed food items and monetary donations for the New Hampshire Food Bank. Checks should be made payable to "NH Food Bank" and sent to NHWBA at P. O. Box 915, Manchester, NH 03105.

Food donations made within individual firms and offices will be collected by NHWBA representatives from May 11th to May 13th. If you would like to collect items at your office or would like to donate items and need to know where to bring them, please contact Gretchen Pyles or Heather Flanner.

All food items and monetary donations collected during the drive will benefit the New Hampshire Food Bank to help with the increased need for food during the summer months. Specifically, the New Hampshire Food Bank and local food pantries have the added strain of families needing more food because they cannot rely on the schools for hot lunches for their children.

Donations of all sizes are welcome and encouraged. Thank you to all who donate to the NHWBA's Food Drive!

In Honor of Baseball's Opening Day on April 5th and Equal Pay Day on April 14th
Women have been fighting for equal pay and equal playing time for decades.  The stories of two women baseball players, Lizzie Murphy and Jackie Mitchell, are amazing testaments to the power of perseverance.

Lizzie Murphy played on men's semi-pro teams in the 1920s and 1930s.  After a team owner refused to pay her the same as men, she held out - becoming the first female holdout in professional sports.  The owner caved and from then on, she received equal pay.  She played on all-star teams in both the American League and National League - the first player of either gender to do that.  She also hit a single off Satchel Paige!

In 1931, Jackie Mitchell was a 17 year old girl playing for the Chattanooga Lookouts, a minor league team in Tennessee.  She faced Babe Ruth and then Lou Gehrig in an exhibition game and struck them both out on a combined seven pitches.  Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis promptly voided her contract stating that baseball was "too strenuous" for women.

Here's to all the brave women like Lizzie and Jackie, who have led the way in truly "leveling the playing field."  Today, we continue to fight for equal rights for women.  Equal Pay Day is April 14, 2015.  To learn more about Equal Pay Day, click here.
