Greetings!
Fall is in the air... school has started for many of our kids, and the NHWBA Annual Fall Reception is right around the corner. This fall also brings new beginnings for our organization, with a newly elected Board of Directors and a new slate of networking and programming events being planned for the upcoming year. I am very excited and honored to serve as President of NHWBA for the next two years, and I hope you will join me in welcoming our new Board members.
Summer is usually a quiet time for the NHWBA, but this year was an exception. Several of our Board members and past presidents attended the NCWBA Annual Summit in Boston on August 8, where we were honored to receive the NCWBA Public Service Award for the first time. Our Executive Director, Gretchen Pyles, and I also met with the NHWBA past presidents and the current leadership of the Women's Law Student Association at UNH Law to discuss programming and networking opportunities for the upcoming year. We are excited to start implementing the new ideas generated by these discussions.
We will hold our Annual Fall Reception on Thursday, September 18 at the Concord Country Club. We are very excited to honor Carol Hess as the recipient of the 2014 Marilla M. Ricker Achievement Award and Allison Fusco as the 2014 Winnie McLaughlin Scholarship recipient. We are thrilled to have the support of many law firms, organizations and individuals in sponsoring this annual evening of networking and celebration. I look forward to seeing you there.
Best regards,
Karyl Roberts Martin, President
New Hampshire Women's Bar Association

Spotlight on our Member
The NHWBA wishes to thank Holly Barcroft for her years of leadership on its Board and congratulate her on completing her term as President. Holly has served on the NHWBA's Board for almost a decade and she has helped to further the mission of the NHWBA.
Holly is an attorney with Nixon Peabody, and focuses her practice on corporate litigation and bankruptcy. She formerly served as the president of the board of Dress for Success New Hampshire and was a member of the Webster-Batchelder American Inn of Court. She is a long-time volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Manchester and is currently serving on its board of directors.
The NHWBA is honored to have had Holly at the helm of the organization for the past two years. As current President, Karyl Martin aptly stated, "Holly is a true advocate for the NHWBA and its mission. She led the organization as President through its 15th Anniversary and receipt of its first national award this year. Her leadership skills and experience have been instrumental in building and guiding the organization." Thank you, Holly!

What Works for Women at Work
with Author Joan C. Williams
When: Thursday, September 11, 2014
Time: 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Join NAWL's Moderator, Michele Coleman Mayes for a discussion of Joan C. Williams' What Works for Women at Work.
About What Works for Women at Work: An essential resource for any working woman, What Works for Women at Work is a comprehensive and insightful guide for mastering office politics as a woman. Authored by Joan C. Williams, one of the nation's most-cited experts on women and work, and her daughter, writer Rachel Dempsey, this unique book offers a multi-generational perspective into the realities of today's workplace. Often women receive messages that they have only themselves to blame for failing to get ahead-Negotiate more! Stop being such a wimp! Stop being such a witch! What Works for Women at Work tells women it's not their fault. The simple fact is that office politics often benefits men over women.
Moderator Bio: Michele Coleman Mayes is Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary for the New York Public Library (NYPL). Ms. Mayes joined NYPL in August 2012 after serving as Executive Vice President and General Counsel for Allstate Insurance Company since 2007. She served as a Senior Vice President and the General Counsel of Pitney Bowes Inc. from 2003 to 2007 and in several legal capacities at Colgate-Palmolive from 1992 to 2003. Before her various roles as corporate counsel, Mayes served in the U.S. Department of Justice, eventually assuming the role of Chief of the Civil Division in Detroit. Ms. Mayes has received many awards and accolades, including the Margaret Brent Award from the American Bar Association Commission on Women in the Profession and the Trailblazer Award from the Minority Corporate Counsel Association. She has also been identified as one of America's top African-American lawyers.
