News and Events:
May 2014

As several of you likely know, retired Superior Court Judge John Lewis was reprimanded for making certain remarks, and the New Hampshire Bar Association's Board of Governors recently considered whether or not Judge Lewis should be recognized as a retiring judge at next month's annual meeting.  Judge Lewis will be included among the other retiring judges, as reported by the New Hampshire Union Leader earlier this week.

In an official statement that the NHWBA Board of Directors released last week on behalf of the Board itself, and not the entire membership, we did not oppose inclusion of Judge Lewis on the list of retiring judges.  Our reasoning was that no other reprimanded retiring judge has ever been removed from the official list of retiring judges announced at each year's annual meeting.  However, we did take the opportunity to point out that the controversy surrounding the remarks and the aftermath only highlight the continuing need for a women's bar association in New Hampshire.  Our mission of seeking true gender equality remains ever important, and we will not rest in its pursuit.

I welcome you to reach out to me or any of our Board members should you have any questions or concerns about the Board's statement.

Best regards,

Holly J. Barcroft, President

New Hampshire Women's Bar Association

NHWBA News

Spotlight on our Member

Our spotlight this month is on our member, Catherine E. Shanelaris of Shanelaris & Schirch.  Cathy was recently selected to receive the Ted Jordan Award from the Nashua Bar Association.

The Ted Jordan Award is given in memory of Ted Jordan, a member of the Nashua Bar Association from 1967 to 2002. It honors his adventurous spirit and lifelong concern for helping to improve the local bar association and community and is presented to an individual who embodies these same ideals.

Cathy is a partner at Shanelaris & Schirch in Nashua and focuses her practice on family law. She is a member of the Family Law Section of the New Hampshire Bar Association, a lecturer on family law topics at continuing legal education programs and the author of several bar journal and legal articles relating to family law issues. In addition to being a board member of the NHWBA, she is also a member of the NH Supreme Court's Access to Justice Commission, and a Board Member of the Pro Bono Governing Board. She is also a trained marital mediator.

Prior to founding Shanelaris & Schrich, Cathy was the chief staff attorney for the New Hampshire Division of Child Support Services and a county governor for the New Hampshire Trial Lawyers Association.  In 2010, she received the L. Jonathan Ross Award for Outstanding Commitment to Legal Services for the Poor from the New Hampshire Bar Association.

Cathy will receive the Ted Jordan Award from the Nashua Bar Association on Wednesday, June 11, 2014.  A dinner will be held in her honor at Nashua Country Club, 25 Fairway Street in Nashua.  Cocktails will be served at 5:30 p.m. with dinner served at 6:30 p.m.  The cost to attend the dinner is $40.00.  If you would like to attend this dinner, please contact Tanya Spony at TSpony@nhlaw-nashua.com by June 4, 2014.  To learn more about the Award Dinner, click here.

Congratulations to Cathy on this well deserved honor.

NHWBA's Food Drive a Success

For the sixth consecutive year, the NHWBA held a food drive to help stock the New Hampshire Food Bank for the summer months.  Thanks to all the attorneys and their staff from around the state who donated food items or made monetary donations.  As a result of their generosity, 575 pounds of food was collected and over $2,100 was donated to the New Hampshire Food Bank.  The staff at the New Hampshire Food Bank was very appreciative because community needs tend to increase during the summer months when families are not able to rely on school lunch programs to provide meals to their children.  The NHWBA wishes to recognize the following firms and individuals for their generous donations:

Walk a Mile in My Heels:  Sharing our Stories

Ms. JD invites you to share your story.  An anonymous blog has been set up on their website to allow women attorneys to discuss the issues we face on a daily basis.  They highlight the situations we have all found ourselves in including being mistaken for the court reporter, being ignored by the judge, being spoken down to by the mediator.  These are humiliating and difficult moments.  Ms. JD asserts that now is a good time to start talking about these issues - to start breaking the code of silence. Ms. JD invites you to tell your story and share what it's like to walk a mile (or even just for a few moments) in your heels. They point out that even if we tell our stories anonymously, it's time that we start telling our stories.

Applications Now Being Accepted for
NHBA Leadership Academy

The NHBA Leadership Academy is now accepting applications for the incoming 2014-2015 Academy class. The deadline to submit applications is Friday, July 18, 2014, at 5:00 p.m.  To be eligible, you must have been admitted to the NHBA after November 2004 and prior to November 2011.

The NHBA Leadership Academy is a nine-month leadership-training program designed to foster the professional growth and enhance the leadership skills of a diverse group of attorneys.

Its mission is:  To promote and encourage leadership and professionalism by identifying present and future leaders who are members of the New Hampshire Bar, and providing them with a program designed to develop leadership skills; to foster camaraderie; and to provide exposure to leaders in the legal, business and government communities.

Up to eighteen attorney members of the NHBA who have been in practice for at least three years and not more than ten years will be carefully selected for this Academy. In an effort to achieve diversity among the participants, qualified individuals will be sought from different backgrounds, large and small law firms, the private and public sectors, different practice areas, and different geographical parts of the state. Generally, the monthly programs will be four (4) to five (5) hours in duration. There may be potential CLE credit for certain sessions, but this is not guaranteed.  Each Academy participant must make a two-year commitment following the completion of the program, serving on a NHBA section or committee, or other Bar-related activity.  The cost of the Leadership Academy is $750.  Financial aid is available.
