News and Events:
April 2014

I don't know about the rest of you, but I am seriously hoping that today's April showers bring May flowers (and warmer temperatures) in short order.

Spring is known as a time of renewal, so what better time to tell you to be on the lookout for a ballot to vote on the next term of NHWBA Board members. Please let your voice be heard in this important process. Vote early, and vote often!

All kidding aside, do vote early, but only vote once. And if there is anything the current or future Board can do to enhance your membership experience, please don't hesitate to ask. We love to hear from you.

Best regards,

Holly J. Barcroft, President

New Hampshire Women's Bar Association

Plan to Attend the NCWBA's Leadership Summit in Boston on August 8, 2014
where the NHWBA will Receive the
2014 Public Service Award

The National Conference of Women's Bar Associations' Leadership Summit will be held on Friday, August 8, 2014 at Suffolk University Law School.  The theme of this year's Summit is Breaking Barriers - Building Bridges.  The Awards Luncheon where the NHWBA will receive the 2014 Public Service Award for its "Overcoming Cancer's Legal Challenges" program will be held at the Boston College Club.

The Leadership Summit will include welcoming remarks from the Honorable Barbara A. Lenk, Associate Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.  The opening keynote speaker will be Lauren Stiller Rikleen, author of the highly acclaimed, ground-breaking book, You Raised Us, Now Work With Us - Millennials, Career Success and Building Strong Workplace Teams.  Her book is an indispensable resource to help Millennials, Gen-Xers and Baby Boomers understand generational differences and create a more effective work environment. Each attendee will receive a copy of this book.

Koriamanya Carew, Director of Strategic Diversity Initiatives at Shook, Hardy & Bacon, will discuss current issues in breaking barriers in diversity.

The luncheon speaker will be the Honorable Nancy Gertner.  Formerly a federal judge, Nancy Gertner is now Professor of Practice at Harvard Law School.  She was selected as one of this year's recipients of the Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement Award from the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession.

Caryl Rivers, Professor of Journalism at Boston University, and Rosalind Barnett, Senior Scientist at Women's Studies Research Center at Brandeis University, co-authors of the book, The New Soft War on Women, will comment on harmful media narratives about gender.

Please mark your calendars now to attend this year's Summit and help the NHWBA celebrate its selection as the 2014 Public Service Award recipient.  The cost of the full-day program, including continental breakfast, awards luncheon and a copy of You Raised Us, Now Work With Us is $200.  Registration will open shortly.

NHWBA's Annual Food Drive
Ends May 9, 2014

It is not too late to start collecting food for NHWBA's Annual Food Drive.  For the sixth consecutive year, the NHWBA is collecting food and monetary donations to help feed hungry families here in New Hampshire. From April 14th to May 9th, the NHWBA will be collecting canned or boxed food items and monetary donations for the New Hampshire Food Bank. Checks should be made payable to "NH Food Bank" and sent to NHWBA at P. O. Box 915, Manchester, NH 03105.

Food donations made within individual firms and offices will be collected by NHWBA representatives from May 9th to May 13th. If you would like to collect items at your office or would like to donate items and need to know where to bring them, please contact Gretchen Pyles or Heather Flanner.

All food items and monetary donations collected during the drive will benefit the New Hampshire Food Bank to help with the increased need for food during the summer months. Specifically, the New Hampshire Food Bank and local food pantries have the added strain of families needing more food because they cannot rely on the schools for hot lunches for their children.

Donations of all sizes are welcome and encouraged. Thank you to all who donate to the NHWBA's Food Drive!

Bowl for Kids' Sake (BFKS) is the largest fundraising event of the year for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Manchester, and 100% of the funds raised through this event goes directly to their programs providing one-to-one mentoring for children facing adversity in the Greater Manchester and Greater Concord communities.  Partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters through Bowl for Kids' Sake makes a positive, long-lasting impact on children right here in our community.

We are creating one or more teams of up to 6 people.  Each bowler is asked to raise at least $50; people who raise over $100 are entered into raffles for great prizes.

We will also create a donations webpage, so that even if bowling is not for you, you can make a donation to the NHWBA team.

"Stiletto Network" by Pamela Ryckman

When:     Thursday, May 8, 2014

Time:      2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Join NAWL's Moderator, Karen Kahn for a discussion of Pamela Ryckman's "Stiletto Network".

About "Stiletto Network": More women are running major companies than ever before. While still far too few in number, these female heads of industry are the forerunners of a radical shift in power now underway. During the past few years, women's groups have been coalescing in every major American city. Formidable ladies across professions are convening at unprecedented rates, forming salons, dinner groups, and networking circles, and collaborating to achieve clout and success. A new girls' network is alive and set to hyperdrive. Stiletto Network is about what happens when bright, extraordinary women, from captains of industry to aspiring entrepreneurs, come together to celebrate and unwind, debate and compare notes. But it's also about what happens when they leave the table, when the talking stops and the action starts. It's about how they mine their collective intelligence to realize their dreams or champion a cause, how they lift up their friends and push them forward, how they join forces to ensure each woman gets what she needs, be it information, an introduction, a partnership, or a landmark deal. This is the first book to shed light on this groundbreaking movement. Sharing story after story of women banding together to help other women, "Stiletto Network" is both a call to action and an inside look at a better way of doing business.
