News and Events:
December 2013

Season's greetings, NHWBA members!  On behalf of the entire NHWBA Board, I wish you and your families and friends a happy, healthy and safe holiday season.

For those of you who have been following the ongoing story surrounding the status of appointments to the D.C. Circuit, you likely heard that on December 10, 2013, the Senate confirmed the nomination of Patricia Millett.  Attorney Millett is most recently the co-chair of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld's appellate and U.S. Supreme Court practice. She has argued a remarkable 32 times before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Shortly after 1:00 in the morning on December 12, 2013, the Senate also confirmed the nomination of Nina Pillard to the D.C. Circuit. Attorney Pillard most recently served as a law professor at Georgetown University, and she has served as deputy assistant attorney general and as an assistant solicitor general.

You may know that the NHWBA wrote to New Hampshire Senator Kelly Ayotte to provide our support for both of these judicial candidates to receive an up or down vote.  It is very exciting indeed to have two well-qualified and very talented women be appointed to the federal bench within days of one another.  Just one more thing to celebrate during this most wonderful time of the year!

Best regards,

Holly J. Barcroft, President

New Hampshire Women's Bar Association

New Hampshire Bar Association
is Accepting Nominations for the
Philip S. Hollman Gender Equality Award

Nominations are being sought for the Philip S. Hollman Gender Equality Award.  This award was established by the Committee on Gender Equality on the occasion of Judge Hollman's retirement from the Superior Court Bench in 2003. The purpose of the award is to honor Judge Hollman's efforts as a stalwart advocate for gender equality in the legal system.

The recipient of the award will be someone who has exhibited a dedication to promoting respect and fair treatment toward all members of the judicial system. The recipient shows a dedication to promoting gender equality and educating others about gender equality issues. The recipient is not afraid to take initiative in the area of gender equality and his/her actions and words are emblematic of a role model in this area.

The nominee can be a member of the bar, employee of a law firm, New Hampshire court personnel, or an employee of a state department or agency who is part of the legal system. The Committee on Gender Equality will review the nominations and select the recipient who will be presented with the award at the Gender Equality Breakfast during the NHBA Midyear Meeting on March 7, 2014.
