Memo Regarding Public Speaking Tips for Women Poorly Received by Some Female Associates at Large International Law Firm

The ABA Journal recently reported that some of the female associates of Clifford Chance law firm were offended by a memo they received from their firm that outlined public speaking tips for women.  The advice includes "lose the quirky mannerisms that are so charming to those who do know you," "don't take your purse up to the podium," and "your voice is higher than you hear. . . .  Think Lauren Bacall, not Marilyn Monroe." Clifford Chance issued the following statement to the ABA Journal: "The original presentation and associated tips represented a personal perspective, shared with a group of colleagues, some just starting out in their careers. . . .  The offense caused by a small percentage of the suggestions in the tip sheet was entirely unintentional."  To read the entire article, click here.  To read the memo, click here

The American Lawyer Reports the Results of its Survey of New Partners in the Am Law 200 Firms

The American Lawyer released the results of its 2013 New Partner Survey this month.  They received 469 completed responses from attorneys who began working as partner between 2010 and 2013. Female respondents made up one-third of those responses.  The article notes that there were significant differences in the responses based on gender.  Women reported that their path to partnership was often longer than for male partners, fewer women reported feeling adequately prepared for the job, only a third of women said they expected to be a rainmaker, and only 83 percent of women said they had been asked to lead a team on a matter.  To read the entire article, click here

CNN Op-Ed Regarding

the Paycheck Fairness Act

In a CNN Opinion piece, Fatima Goss Graves, who is the Vice President for Education and Employment at the National Women's Law Center, wrote an article with Arjun Sethi explaining why the Paycheck Fairness Act matters.  They explain that there are loopholes in the Equal Pay Act of 1963 including a rule that requires that employees keep their pay secret.  The article points out that the Paycheck Fairness Act would prohibit retaliation against employees for discussing their wages.  To read the entire article, click here
