News and Events:
October 2013

As you may know, in June of this year, President Obama nominated three lawyers to fill the long-standing vacancies on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals. This week, the Senate will consider one of these nominees, Attorney Patricia Millett.  Over the next few days, the Senate Majority Leader is expected to trigger the procedure requiring 60 votes before the Senate will give her nomination to this important court an up-or-down vote.

The NHWBA recently wrote to Senator Kelly Ayotte to encourage her to support an up-or-down vote for Patricia Millett.  Attorney Millett has been nationally recognized as an appellate specialist and has argued 32 cases before the United States Supreme Court. To learn more about Attorney Millett, click here.  If confirmed, she will be filling the seat left vacant by Chief Justice John Roberts in 2005, when he was elevated to the Supreme Court.

Though Attorney Millett is exceptionally qualified, it is not at all clear that she will be allowed an up-or-down vote. You might recall that a previous nominee to the D.C. Circuit, Caitlin Halligan, was filibustered twice, and an up-or-down vote was blocked for over two years before she withdrew her nomination.

We will continue to keep you updated on the nominations for the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals.  In the meantime, here are ways you may get involved, if you are so inclined:

  • Take action: Tell your Senators to allow an up-or-down vote on the nomination of Patricia Millett: http://bit.ly/Hk7I3i
  • Let the National Women's Law Center know how you would like to get involved: Please email Amy Matsui at amatsui@nwlc.org with suggestions for taking action.
The NHWBA supports the appointment of more qualified women to the judicial bench and encourages its qualified members to apply for State vacancies when they arise.

Best regards,

Holly J. Kilibarda, President

New Hampshire Women's Bar Association
