News and Events:
August 2013

It is that time of year again, the most wonderful time of the year, according to a well-known Staples commercial.  The kids are back to school, and so starts a new year full of possibilities.  I remember the feeling of excitement that accompanied the first day of every school year: a shiny new set of school supplies and some brand spanking new school clothes were all it took to make the mundane, ordinary school day feel like something special.

Perhaps you can make your mundane, ordinary work day feel a bit more special by trying something new yourself.  Join the NHWBA for a stress-relieving networking event.  Ask us about mentoring a law student through the NHWBA, and in doing so, re-live those good old law school days.  Join us for our annual Fall Reception, whether you are a first-time attendee or the event is on your annual list of events not to miss.  No matter which of our many events or opportunities you choose, involvement with the NHWBA is sure to reinvigorate you and bring some excitement back to your work day.  We look forward to seeing you soon!

Best regards,

Holly J. Kilibarda, President

New Hampshire Women's Bar Association

Please join us at our 16th Annual Fall Reception at the Concord Country Club.  At the reception, we will present the 2013 Marilla M. Ricker Achievement Award to the Honorable Tina L. Nadeau. The Ricker Award is presented annually to a woman lawyer who has achieved professional excellence, and paved the way to success for other women lawyers, advanced opportunities for women in the profession and/or performed exemplary public service on behalf of women.  Chief Justice Nadeau meets and exceeds all of these requirements.  She has long been a champion for gender equality in New Hampshire.

Join us for a night of recognition of the achievements of Chief Justice Nadeau, and for an opportunity to network with fellow attorneys and judges from across the state.  The reception is open to the public.  No RSVP is required.  Hors d' oeuvres and beverages will be provided.  At the reception, we will also present the 2013 Winnie McLaughlin Scholarship to Lindsay Whitelaw, a second year student at the UNH School of Law.  Additionally, a raffle will be held to support the Winnie McLaughlin Scholarship Fund.  We hope to see you at the Fall Reception.

More than $68 million was raised through Making Strides events in that year alone. Help the NHWBA reach its goal of raising $5,000 to help finish the fight against breast cancer.

NCWBA Wants to Shatter the Echo Chamber

At the National Conference of Women's Bar Associations' Leadership Summit held on August 9, 2013, it was decided that one of the biggest challenges for women attorneys is to "get out of the echo chamber." This term refers to the seemingly endless discussions of women attorneys' challenges among themselves, and the recognition that in order to effectuate real change, we need to move outside of the echo chamber, and involve men in constructing change.  Teresa M. Beck is the chair of the Special Projects and Programming Committee.  She would like to invite everyone to join in a dialogue about how best to engage men in the conversation about gender equity.  From these discussions, the NCWBA hopes to develop a program that can result in more effective and profound change.  To join the conversation and share your ideas, go to NCWBA's LinkedIn page by clicking here.

Lauren Stiller Rikleen Discusses the ABA's Gender Equity Task Force's Recent Publication - Closing the Gap:  A Road Map for Achieving Gender Pay Equity in Law Firm Partner Compensation

Last week, Lauren Stiller Rikleen wrote an article for Harvard Business Review's Blog Network in which she outlines recommendations made by the ABA's Gender Equity Task Force that can help eliminate gender bias in the legal profession, particularly as it relates to partner compensation.  She outlines concrete steps that can be incorporated into any firm's existing compensation system to eliminate barriers to equal pay for women partners.  To review her article, click here.  To review the ABA's Gender Equity Task Force's report entitled "Closing the Gap:  A Road Map for Achieving Gender Pay Equity in Partner Compensation," click here.
