Greetings!
There are two related items of great interest in this newsletter that I would like to bring to your attention.
I would like to encourage all of you to "take a page" from the book of our 2013 Marilla M. Ricker Achievement Award Recipient, Superior Court Chief Justice Tina L. Nadeau, and consider throwing your hats in the ring for the current judicial vacancies. I think that there is a great deal we all can learn from the path taken by Chief Justice Nadeau, and you can hear more about her personal path, her story, and how she rose to her current position by attending our Annual Fall Reception on September 19th.
In the meantime, you can also focus on your own path and continue to write your own story. If you feel inspired and wish to make the bench a part of your own story, this is the perfect opportunity to follow that dream. If the bench is not a part of your own personal dream, but you know or believe that it would be a great fit for one of your female colleagues, now is the time to give her that extra boost of encouragement. It might just be the thing that gives her that last bit of courage she needs to submit her application. Who knows, maybe you will even find yourself delivering the introductory speech as your colleague accepts a future Ricker Award!
This is the way in which we continue to grow and prosper as colleagues: by learning from those who came before us, and by raising up our contemporaries and those who come behind us. Be a part of the story!
Regards,
Holly J. Kilibarda, President New Hampshire Women's Bar Association

Consider Applying for Judicial Vacancies
in Circuit Court and Superior Court
The NHWBA encourages and supports qualified women to apply for several openings in the judiciary. The Judicial Selection Commission has posted notice of judicial vacancies in both the New Hampshire Circuit Court and Superior Court for 2013. There are between three and five vacancies in the Circuit Court. Some of these Circuit Court positions will emphasize probate law or family law. There is one vacancy in Superior Court which may require regular travel to Grafton County. All applicants must submit the application and all accompanying documents, including writing samples, via e-mail only to jscapplications2013@gmail.com. To download the revised 2013 application, click here. Completed applications must be received by no later than 5:00 p.m. on August 9, 2013. If you have questions about the application process, please contact co-chairs Emily Rice at (603) 665-8824 or Jim Rosenberg at (603) 225-7262.

A photograph of twenty-six of the First 100 Women admitted to practice in New Hampshire has found a new home. The photograph, which was taken at the Tribute to the First 100 Women held on May 2, 2002, will now hang in the New Hampshire Bar Association's Bar Center. So, if your travels take you to the Bar Center, please ask to see the photograph which helps celebrate the women who led the way for today's women lawyers. Spotlight on our Member
Our spotlight this month is on our member, the late Elyse Alkalay. Elyse passed away on June 10, 2013 after a brave battle with colon cancer. Elyse was born in New Jersey but grew up in Israel where she served in the Israeli military. She met her husband Dani and returned to the United States for law school. She graduated from Boston University Law School and Fletchers School of Law and Diplomacy - Tufts University. After clerking for the New Hampshire Superior Court, Elyse went to work for the New Hampshire Attorney General's Office, where she worked for approximately ten years. Elyse was also a member of the New Hampshire Bar Association's Leadership Academy's Class of 2012.
Elyse loved being the mother of her three children, Razz, Stav and Nitzann. She enjoyed being a coach of the Bicentennial Elementary School's Battle of the Books team for the past three years and was the most-winning coach ever. Battle of the Books is a program where teams meet weekly to practice for a scholarly competition about reading held each spring. The Elyse Alkalay Battle of the Books Fund has been established in her memory. If you would like to make a donation, checks should be made payable to the Bicentennial PTO, with "Elyse's Fund" in the memo line and sent to Bicentennial PTO, 296 East Dunstable Road, Nashua, NH 03062.

U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee
Met on Wednesday, July 24, 2013
to Consider the Nomination of
Magistrate Judge Landya McCafferty
to Fill Vacancy at U.S. District Court
In May, President Obama nominated Magistrate Judge Landya McCafferty to fill the judicial vacancy at the U.S. District Court created when Judge McAuliffe moved to senior status. Senator Jeanne Shaheen and Senator Kelly Ayotte have endorsed Magistrate Judge McCafferty's nomination and the NHWBA wrote a letter of support. This week, Senator Shaheen addressed the Senate Judiciary Committee to support the nomination, which would make Magistrate Judge McCafferty the first woman to serve on the federal bench in New Hampshire. To read Senator Shaheen's remarks, click here. Senator Ayotte also urged swift confirmation of Magistrate Judge McCafferty's nomination. She released the following statement this week: "Judge McCafferty's extensive federal court experience - including her service as U.S. Magistrate Judge for the District of New Hampshire for the past three years - makes her well-qualified for this position on the federal bench. I look forward to supporting her confirmation and I urge my colleagues to act swiftly to approve her nomination."
