Greetings!
A friend of mine from law school recently posted a joke on Facebook: "Brace yourselves! Everyone on Facebook is about to become a constitutional scholar!"
All kidding aside, these are indeed exciting times for all legal aficionados, whether they be true constitutional scholars or not. As attorneys, we are poised to enjoy and to learn from the recent SCOTUS decisions and the high-profile trials that are the focus of virtually every television and radio station. As an example, I was listening to HLN on satellite radio on my way home from work yesterday, and they were streaming live from the courtroom of the George Zimmerman trial. It was both an intriguing and an educational experience as I listened to Mr. Zimmerman's attorney cross-examining the State's first witness. And this morning, I know that I was only one of several attorneys taking the time to read Justice Kennedy's opinion striking down and finding Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act to be unconstitutional.
Ours is a profession in which, perhaps more than any other, we are constantly learning and evolving, because the law is a living thing, also constantly evolving. I encourage you to soak up the many resources which now virtually surround us, not only for the pure enjoyment of it, but also for the valuable learning experience.
Regards, Holly J. Kilibarda, President New Hampshire Women's Bar Association
