May 2013

Greetings!

I would like to take a moment to thank each and every one of you who attended our 15th Anniversary Celebration at The Currier Museum this month.  I was so very pleased with the beautiful surroundings of our venue, but even more importantly, I spent the evening reconnecting with long-time colleagues and acquaintances who I do not get to see as often as I would like.  Based on the smiling faces I saw throughout the room, I have a feeling that several of you had a similar experience.  The joy and excitement in the room was infectious!

I would like to recognize our co-chairs for the Celebration, our Vice President, Karyl Martin, and our former Hillsborough County - South Representative and newly minted Networking Director, Talesha Caynon.  They and their committee did a fabulous job planning this event, and I know that Talesha will do a great job in her new role on the Board.  At the same time, it is with a heavy heart for us, but also great excitement for her that I wish our outgoing Networking Director, Erin Wolf and her family lots of luck in their new adventure out west!

Special thanks go out to our Past President, Jennifer Parent for her inspiring words of wisdom and her hard work on the committee preparing for the event.  Special thanks also go out to our keynote speaker, Pam Berman.  It was such a great honor to have her join us.

Our Celebration would not have been nearly as much fun without each of our members, so please let us see you at another NHWBA event in the very near future!

Best regards,

Holly J. Kilibarda, President

New Hampshire Women's Bar Association

NHWBA News

Spotlight on our Member

Our spotlight this month is on our member, Kristin Mendoza.  Kristin is a past president of NHWBA who practices at Devine, Millimet & Branch in Manchester. She is a member of her firm's Small Business team that was honored with the U.S. Small Business Administration's 2013 New Hampshire Small Business "Champion of the Year" award. The award recognizes the firm's support of small businesses in the state via its Business Launch Initiative.

The Business Launch Initiative, which offers free business formation services to startup business ventures in New Hampshire, was lauded for "understanding and supporting the importance of obtaining sound legal advice before the foundation of a business is set" and for the fact that Devine Millimet has a team of attorneys "focused on serving the needs of their small business clients."

Angela Martin, chair of Devine Millimet's Small Business practice group explained, "To date, our Small Business team has launched more than 200 new businesses in the state of New Hampshire, helping budding entrepreneurs launch their startup ventures while protecting their interests and positioning them for the future. We firmly believe that small businesses are the backbone of the New Hampshire economy, and we are proud to play a part in helping them get started on the right path toward growth and success."

Congratulations to Kristin and her firm for this honor.

NHWBA's Food Drive a Success

For the fifth consecutive year, the NHWBA held a food drive to help stock the New Hampshire Food Bank for the summer months.  Thanks to all the attorneys and their staff from around the state who donated food items or made monetary donations.  As a result of their generosity, 743 pounds of food was collected and over $1,500 was donated to the New Hampshire Food Bank.  The staff at the New Hampshire Food Bank was very appreciative because community needs tend to increase during the summer months when families are not able to rely on school lunch programs to provide meals to their children.  The NHWBA wishes to recognize the following firms and individuals for their generous donations:

Join the ABA Gender Equity Task Force's

Virtual March for Gender Equity

The visual of hundreds of thousands of people descending on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and the sea of people coming together for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963 has become an iconic representation of people standing in concert to effect change. While nothing can ever replace the historic transcendence of that day, in this new millennium a virtual voice carries the same power and ability to effect change as a physical presence.

Like in 1963, people of today still struggle with the ability to be treated equally in the work place. What is gender equity? It is equal pay for equal work. It is paternity leave without stigma. It is flexible time to meet personal and family needs, while still being able to participate and make a productive contribution to the work place. It is the recognition of the differences between men and women without diminishing the value and contribution each provide. In a word, it is "fairness."

March with us from now through the ABA's Day of the Woman on August 10, 2013.  To participate, click here and then click on the vote button next to the red shoes on the website.
