Greetings!
What better time for our annual call for nominations for the Marilla M. Ricker Achievement Award than now, as our state legislature considers a joint resolution to display a portrait of Marilla M. Ricker in the State House Complex. Please see below for more details. If the resolution passes, the Ricker portrait would be the first portrait of a woman hanging in the State House. I would like to invite and encourage each of you to nominate your deserving colleagues for the Ricker Achievement Award. This is an excellent opportunity to honor the mission of the NHWBA by promoting the advancement of the professional women in your life. It is often said that women are not as inclined to promote themselves and to trumpet their own achievements, and that this tendency is in part responsible for the disparities between men and women in the workplace. One way we can overcome the impacts of this tendency is to promote one another. So, please don't be shy about submitting nominations, and be on the lookout for other opportunities to promote the achievements of your colleagues and to seek out assistance on your own behalf! Regards, Holly J. Kilibarda, President New Hampshire Women's Bar Association

In Memoriam: Leila L. Maynard
Leila Lister Maynard passed away on March 21, 2013. Born in Concord on March 13, 1919, to E. Percy and Tamar Burdett Lister, she graduated from Concord High School, attended the University of New Hampshire, and was the first female valedictorian of Suffolk Law School, graduating in 1943. Throughout her law school years, she was the only female student in the school.
Mrs. Maynard was admitted to the practice of law in New Hampshire on June 26, 1944 and became the 25th woman to be admitted to the New Hampshire Bar. She subsequently married William Maynard, who had passed the bar with her, and raised five children. Mrs. Maynard was the first female selectman of the Town of Bow, and served as a marital master during the initial phase of that program. She also served on many other boards and committees throughout her life. She was the senior female member of the New Hampshire Bar at the time of her death.

Spotlight on our Member
Our spotlight this month is on our member, the Honorable Gillian L. Abramson. Judge Abramson was recently named the 2013 recipient of the Philip S. Hollman Gender Equality Award at the New Hampshire Bar Association's Gender Equality Breakfast held on March 8, 2013. Judge Abramson will receive this award at the Bar Association's Annual Meeting in Portsmouth, NH in June.
Judge Abramson was appointed Associate Justice of the New Hampshire Superior Court in 1994. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of New Hampshire and her law degree from Fordham University. Prior to her judicial appointment, she was an attorney with the law firms of Bower & Gardner in New York, NY and Wadleigh, Starr, Peters, Dunn & Chiesa in Manchester, NH. Judge Abramson was also legal counsel to Governor Merrill and former chair of the Governor's Commission on Domestic Violence.
Congratulations to Judge Abramson on this honor.

Bill Pending in NH Legislature to
Display a Portrait of Marilla M. Ricker
in the State House
House Joint Resolution 1 seeks to have a portrait of Marilla M. Ricker displayed in a place of honor in the State House Complex. Marilla Ricker paved the way for women lawyers and advanced their contribution to the legal profession.
Marilla M. Ricker was born in New Durham, New Hampshire in 1840. In 1870, she became the first woman in New Hampshire to attempt to vote, when she presented her ballot at the polls in Dover's Ward Three. She was refused, and for the remainder of her life, she tried to convince the legislature and the people of New Hampshire that women deserved the right to vote.
In 1882, Marilla Ricker passed the bar exam in Washington, D.C., where she became the first New Hampshire woman to gain admission to an organized bar. She was one of the first women admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court. She practiced in Washington, D.C. for a number of years before returning to New Hampshire.
In 1890, Marilla Ricker became the first woman to apply for admission to the New Hampshire Bar. In Petition of Ricker, 66 N.H. 207 (1890), she petitioned the New Hampshire Supreme Court for the right of women to practice law in New Hampshire after she was denied that right simply because of her gender. With all justices concurring, Marilla Ricker won the right women lawyers have today.
In Petition of Ricker, the New Hampshire Supreme Court held that women may be attorneys-at-law and eligible for admission to the state bar, upon taking and passing the examination, or upon submitting evidence of admission and sufficient practice in another state. Interestingly, the first woman lawyer in Massachusetts, Lelia J. Robinson, appeared with Marilla Ricker in her petition.
In 1907, Marilla Ricker stated, "I think we should all work for equal suffrage, and I trust the time is not far distant when no man or woman will even admit that it was ever opposed in New Hampshire. I want New Hampshire to be the banner state of the East on the equal suffrage question."
From her attempts to vote and her petition to the New Hampshire Supreme Court, Marilla Ricker helped set the standard for equal rights for women in New Hampshire.

Table for Eight with
Honorable Landya Boyer McCafferty
a Success!
Seven NHWBA members enjoyed dinner and discussion with Magistrate Judge McCafferty of the U.S. District Court for the District of New Hampshire on March 14, 2013, as part of NHWBA's Table for Eight program. The program was started a few years ago to allow seven of our members to join an experienced attorney or judge for dinner and mentoring in a single evening to share experiences and to discuss work, life and any topics of interest in a relaxed setting. Those who attended the Table for Eight with Judge McCafferty enjoyed discussing a wide range of topics and learned a great deal about practice in general.
More Tables for Eight are being planned. While the Table for Eight with Judge Joseph N. Laplante on April 18th is full, a Table for Eight with Attorney Susan Duprey of Devine, Millimet & Branch is scheduled for May 7, 2013. To register for this Table for Eight, see the article below.

Food Drive to Help Feed Hungry Children to Start Soon!
For the fifth consecutive year, the NHWBA will be collecting food and monetary donations to help feed hungry children here in New Hampshire. From April 15th to May 10th, the NHWBA will be collecting canned fruit, pasta items (boxed, canned or bagged) and monetary donations for the New Hampshire Food Bank. Checks should be made payable to "NH Food Bank" and sent to NHWBA at P. O. Box 915, Manchester, NH 03105.
Food donations made within individual firms and offices will be collected by NHWBA representatives from May 10th to May 15th. If you would like to collect items at your office or would like to donate items and need to know where to bring them, please contact Gretchen Pyles or Heather Flanner. All food items and monetary donations collected during the drive will benefit the New Hampshire Food Bank to help with the increased need for food during the summer months. Specifically, the New Hampshire Food Bank and local food pantries have the added strain of families needing more food because they cannot rely on the schools for hot lunches for their children. Donations of all sizes are welcome and encouraged. Thank you to all who donate to the NHWBA's Food Drive!

Equal Pay Day is Tuesday, April 9, 2013
Equal Pay Day is held annually in April to signify the point into a year that a woman must work to earn what a man made the previous year. Census statistics released in September, 2010 show that women still earn 77 percent of what men earn. Median earnings for most women of color are even lower.
Over a lifetime of work this loss adds up. The typical woman loses $431,000 in pay over a 40-year career. In 2009, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act was signed into law, which amends the Civil Rights Act of 1964 stating that the 180-day statute of limitations for filing an equal-pay lawsuit regarding pay discrimination resets with each new discriminatory paycheck. But, more must be done. The National Committee on Pay Equity suggests wearing red on April 9th to symbolize how far women and minorities are "in the red" with their pay. Also, the ABA has created a Toolkit for Gender Equity in Partner Compensation. Click here to review the toolkit.
