Greetings!
Ever since she was announced as Yahoo!'s CEO, Marissa Mayer has been making headlines, largely for issues which are of concern to many women.
I am sure you recall the widely reported stories about Ms. Mayer being named CEO of Yahoo! when she was five months pregnant, and the stories about her return to work after the birth of her first child following a brief two-week maternity leave. This past week, Ms. Mayer made headlines when she ordered a Yahoo!-wide ban on telecommuting. Reports of her decision and reactions to it have varied widely.
According to Lisa Belkin, a Senior Columnist for The Huffington Post, "[w]hat others see as the future of the workplace, and what parents see as a most important tool for juggling home and work, Marissa Mayer apparently sees as disposable." Meanwhile, Yahoo's HR Director, Jackie Reses reportedly told employees that "[s]peed and quality are often sacrificed when we work from home... We need to be one Yahoo!, and that starts with physically being together."
Several attorneys, both male and female, have begun to take advantage of opportunities to either work a part-time or reduced schedule or to work from home in an effort to better manage their work-life balance. People in all fields who work from home have decried Ms. Mayer's decision as a setback, antiquated, and as a fatal blow to people seeking some sort of work/life balance. Others have defended the decision, pointing out that Yahoo! has a huge number of employees who work from home, several of whom are not productive and appear to be hiding under the radar. As one insider noted: "A lot of people hid. There were all these employees [working remotely] and nobody knew they were still at Yahoo." Arguably, people who tell their employer they are working from home while in reality, they are not fulfilling their work functions, are making it harder for every other worker to convince their employer that alternative working arrangements can be successful.
No matter your view on the stories coming out of Yahoo!, it appears that they will give us fodder for thought-provoking discussion for some time to come!

Spotlight on our Member
 Our spotlight this month is on our member, Colleen Karpinsky. Colleen was recently named to the 40 Under 40 in New Hampshire. Colleen is the Vice President for Talent and Legal at Dyn. She was previously an associate at the McLane Law Firm and in-house counsel at Irving Oil Corporation. Colleen's selection as one of the 40 Under 40 was made easy by the fact that she was nominated by nine different people from various industries.
At Dyn, Colleen is responsible for the company's legal and talent teams, bringing her human resources and legal background to ensure the company can attract and retain the best talent and continue to grow and foster good customer relationships. A graduate of Saint Anselm College, she earned her law degree at the Pennsylvania State University Dickinson School of Law, graduating as a member of the school's prestigious Woolsack Society for academic achievement.
While currently the Vice-Chair of the Manchester Young Professionals' Network, Colleen has also served as a Community Investment Volunteer for the Heritage United Way, a volunteer and mentor for Team in Training (Leukemia & Lymphoma Society) and as a committee member for the New Hampshire Bar Association and the New Hampshire Workplace Initiative Against Domestic Violence.
When interviewed after her selection to the 40 Under 40, Colleen said,"[w]hen I graduated from Penn State, I was looking to return to the Northeast. My options were, go to Boston and sell my soul to a really large law firm, or go to Manchester where I had connections in the community ... where I could have a better opportunity for a work/life balance." She explained, "I had developed a little bit of a network when I was in college, so I had some connections here that were important to me. I felt like this was a place where I could come and live and be successful and happy."

Several NHWBA Members Enjoyed
an Evening with Opera NH at the Palace Theatre
On February 20th, several members of NHWBA were treated to a taste
of opera. We enjoyed Laurence Weissbrot's performance of three arias including a lively rendition of The Micado Song from Gilbert & Sullivan's The Micado. We also were treated to a backstage tour by Peter Ramsey, the Executive Director of the Palace Theatre. A special thanks to NHWBA member and Opera NH board member, Judith Bomster, for organizing the event. It was a lovely evening.

Our featured mentor for the Table for Eight on April 18, 2013 is the Honorable Joseph N. Laplante of the U.S. District Court for the District of New Hampshire. Judge Laplante was born in Nashua, New Hampshire, attended Nashua High School, and went on to Georgetown University, earning an A.B. in American Studies in 1987 and his J.D. from Georgetown Law in 1990.
After passing the New Hampshire bar exam, Judge Laplante joined the law firm of Wiggin & Nourie in Manchester and Nashua. In 1993, Judge Laplante began his career in public service with the New Hampshire Attorney General's Office, serving as an Attorney, then Assistant Attorney General and, ultimately, Senior Assistant Attorney General in A.G. Phillip McLaughlin's (then new) Homicide Unit. From 1998 to 2000, Judge Laplante worked with the U.S. Department of Justice's Criminal Division in the Public Integrity Section as a member of the Campaign Financing Task Force. In 2000, he became an Assistant United States Attorney with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Massachusetts. Two years later, Judge Laplante took a position in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of New Hampshire, primarily working on the New England Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force, and eventually serving as First Assistant United States Attorney. During his tenure as a federal prosecutor, Judge Laplante received the New Hampshire Bar Foundation's Robert Kirby Award, the Lt. Steven P. Demo Law Enforcement Award, the Boston Police Department Distinguished Service Award, the New England Narcotic Enforcement Officers' Association's "Billy Yout Memorial Award," several Congressional Law Enforcement Awards, and was named the state's top prosecutor by New Hampshire Magazine in 2003. Judge Laplante was nominated to the federal bench by President George W. Bush and he became a United States District Judge for the District of New Hampshire on December 28, 2007.
Judge Laplante is a member of the Webster-Batchelder American Inn of Court. He is also an advisory board member of the St. Paul's School Advanced Studies Program, a program that he attended as a student in 1982. Judge Laplante has served on the Nashua Region Board of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation (chairman 2006-08), the Nashua Police Athletic League and Youth Safe Haven (chairman 2003-08), and the St. Christopher School Advisory Board. He coordinates the youth wrestling program (K-8th grade) for the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Nashua, and volunteers at the Corpus Christi Food Pantry. He is a boxing referee, licensed to officiate both professional and amateur bouts.

Celebrate International Women's Day
on March 8th
International Women's Day is celebrated around the globe on March 8th. Started in 1911, this day is an opportunity to reflect on the past struggles of women and to celebrate their accomplishments. In 1975, the United Nations held its first official celebration of International Women's Day. This year, the United Nation's theme for International Women's Day is "A promise is a promise: Time for action to end violence against women." On March 8th, the global community will connect to celebrate the achievements women have made and to inspire our local communities to do more to ensure true equality. Join the women of the world in celebrating this important day.

Plan to Attend the Gender Equality Breakfast at the NH Bar Association's Mid-Year Meeting

Register now for the NHBA Gender Equality Breakfast. Evelyn Murphy, former Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts and founder of The WAGE Project, Inc. a national, grassroots activist organization dedicated to eliminating the gender wage-gap, will be the featured speaker. She was a faculty member in the initial workshop of the GEC's Gender Equality Training Initiative, held this fall. Ms. Murphy, the first woman to serve in statewide office in the Bay State, is author of Getting Even: Why Women Don't Get Paid Like Men and What to Do About It, published by Simon and Schuster in 2005.
The recipient of the Philip S. Hollman Gender Equality Award will also be announced at the Breakfast.

Ms. Greenhouse is a Senior Research Scholar in Law, Knight Distinguished Journalist-in-Residence and Joseph Goldstein Lecturer in Law at Yale Law School.
Proceeds from this event benefit Legal Advice & Referral Center, New Hampshire Legal Assistance and New Hampshire Pro Bono Referral Program.

The guest speaker will be Patricia de Stacy Harrison, who is the President of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Prior to joining CPB in 2005, Ms. Harrison served as Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs and Acting Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs. A former entrepreneur, Ms. Harrison is a frequent speaker and writer on the subjects of leadership, communication strategy and constituency building. She is the recipient of many awards and honors, including the 2008 Leadership Award from the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities and the U.S. Secretary of State's Distinguished Service Award. She also sits on the boards of the National Italian American Foundation, The American University in Rome, the Meridian International Center and IREX.
Ms. Harrison is also Chairman of the Advisory Board of Women and Girls Lead, an innovative public media initiative designed to focus, educate and connect women, girls and their allies across the globe to address the challenges of the 21st century. In August 2012, she was included on the Forbes list of "Women Changing the World in Media" for establishing Women and Girls Lead and her continued leadership on the project.
