Greetings!
Regardless of your political preference or party alliance, we can all agree that it is an exciting time for women in New Hampshire. As news organizations as close to home as WMUR and as far away as The New York Times (and beyond!) have recently reported, New Hampshire made history on election night by becoming the first state to elect an all-female congressional delegation. NHWBA member Annie Kuster and Carol Shea-Porter were elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, joining our U.S. Senators Kelly Ayotte and Jeanne Shaheen. (See below for more on Annie Kuster in our Member Spotlight section!) Exeter attorney Maggie Hassan was elected Governor. Together, these women hold the top five political positions in the State of New Hampshire.
New Hampshire has a proud heritage of women in politics being pacesetters and history makers. In 1999, New Hampshire was the first state to have a female governor, Speaker of the House, Senate President and Attorney General at the same time (Jeanne Shaheen, Donna Sytek, Beverly Hollingworth and Kelly Ayotte, respectively). And in more recent years, in 2008, New Hampshire was the first state where women held the majority in its Senate. At the same time, we also had a female Attorney General, Kelly Ayotte. New Hampshire was also the first state to back a female candidate in a major party presidential primary - Hillary Clinton in 2008.
The U.S. Congress that convenes in January 2013 will include a record number of women: 20 senators and at least 81 representatives. While we have a long way to go, we have much to celebrate. I hope that regardless of your political views, you will join me in being proud of what we as women have accomplished, and look forward with anticipation to all that we can achieve in the future.
Best regards,
Holly J. Kilibarda, President
New Hampshire Women's Bar Association

NHWBA Helps Pack Holiday Care Packages with MooreMart On Saturday, November 10, 2012, several members of NHWBA volunteered with MooreMart to help pack holiday care packages for the troops overseas. We were honored to be there for the shipment of MooreMart's 50,000th care package. Judge Paul Moore and his sister, Carole, established MooreMart several years ago as a family effort to provide needed but unavailable supplies to their brother and his fellow soldiers serving in Iraq. Now, they continue to send supplies to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, and have expanded their mission to include local children in those war torn countries. They send school supplies, toys and outerwear to villages that never had a school or where the schools have been destroyed. To learn more about MooreMart and the wonderful services they provide, click here. |
NHWBA's Table for Eight Mentoring Program Continues On Wednesday, November 14, 2012, several NHWBA members had dinner with New Hampshire Superior Court Justice John M. Lewis at Radici Restaurant in Portsmouth as part of NHWBA's Table for Eight Mentoring Program. The program was started a few years ago to allow seven of our members to join an experienced attorney or judge for dinner and mentoring in a single evening to share experiences and to discuss work, life and any topics of interest in a relaxed setting. Those who attended the Table for Eight with Judge Lewis enjoyed discussing a wide range of topics and learned a great deal about practice in general. More Tables for Eight are being planned. Justice Carol Ann Conboy will host a Table for Eight on February 7, 2013 and Attorney Susan Duprey will host a Table for Eight in May, 2013. Stay tuned for more details! |
Spotlight on our Member Our spotlight this month is on our member and the 2004 Marilla M. Ricker Achievement Award recipient, Ann McLane Kuster. On November 6, 2012, "Annie" was elected to represent New Hampshire's Second Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives. Annie's personal story is very interesting. Politics have always been important to her family. Her great grandfather, John McLane, was Governor of New Hampshire from 1905 to 1907. Both of her parents were politicians. Her father, Malcolm McLane, was Mayor of Concord and a member of New Hampshire's Executive Council. He ran for Governor of New Hampshire in 1972 as an independent, but fell short in his bid to Mel Thomson. Her mother, Susan McLane, was elected to the New Hampshire Senate and unsuccessfully ran for New Hampshire's Second Congressional District. Annie and her mother co-authored a book titled The Last Dance: Facing Alzheimer's with Love and Laughter. After her mother's death, Annie and her father toured New Hampshire speaking about aging and Alzheimer's disease. Annie graduated from Dartmouth College in 1978 and from Georgetown University Law Center in 1984. She was the director of Rath, Young & Pignatelli's education and nonprofit law practice group. She also worked for many years as an adoption attorney and is a member of the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys. Annie served as Chair and member of the Board of the Capitol Center for the Arts, as a Founder and Vice Chair of the Women's Fund of New Hampshire, and as a member of the Boards of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, New Hampshire Public Radio, Child and Family Services of NH, the Alumni Council and Tucker Foundation at Dartmouth College and Womankind Counseling Center. Through her work as a lobbyist, Annie helped create the NH Medication Bridge program, a public-private partnership which provides free prescriptions to patients in need, as well as NH UNIQUE College Savings Plan to help families save money for college tax-free. Annie is a consultant and owner of Newfound Strategies LLC, where she works with non-profit clients to maximize their effectiveness and sustainability. We wish Annie well as she represents New Hampshire citizens in Congress. |

NAWL Foundation Releases its
"Report of a National Survey of Women's Initiatives: The Strategy, Structure and Scope of Women's Initiatives in Law Firms"
The NAWL Foundation recently issued a report outlining the results of the first-ever national survey of women's initiatives in law firms. The survey provides benchmark data on the structures, strategies and scope of women's initiatives among the nation's largest law firms. Based on the results of NAWL's Annual National Survey on Retention and Promotion of Women in Law Firms, which established that women are not advancing in private practice at the same rate as men, the NAWL Foundation sought to obtain systematic information about the structure, functioning and actual impact of firm's "women's initiative" or "women's affinity groups." The survey focused on descriptions of the financing, governance, structure and scope of activities of women's initiatives. To read the full report, click here.

When Concord Attorney Matt Cairns was President-Elect of DRI, he wrote an article about finding the right work-life balance and the importance of taking time for yourself. His article is a good reminder to all of us to carve out a little time for ourselves especially during this busy holiday season. To read the entire article, click here.
