Greetings!
The Fall season always reminds me of the hectic back to school season. As law students, I think we all felt the hefty weight of the pressure that comes with juggling school (including those dreaded final exams), work, and a home life. I know that for me at least, today, the hustle and bustle of the demanding practice of law makes me nostalgic for what, in hindsight, looks like the more carefree and fun days of law school. Well, what better way to reconnect with your inner law student than to get more involved with the University of New Hampshire School of Law!
The NHWBA recently undertook an initiative to mentor female students at UNH Law. The program is still in its early stages, and we are working to formalize the program, but it presents a great opportunity to foster a relationship with a law student and to impart much-needed advice, wisdom and support. I encourage all of you to volunteer to serve as a mentor. I am serving right now, and I can tell you that the mentoring relationship is one that benefits both the mentor and the mentee. We can all learn from one another, no matter the stage of our legal career.
There are also a number of exciting programs at UNH Law, which may be of interest to you. Here are two examples:
Tonight at 5:30 p.m., Chief Justice Wallace Jefferson of Texas, the first African-American to serve there and most recently the president of the Conference of Chief Justices, will be delivering the Kenison Lecture at UNH Law. The Chief received an honorary degree from the school just last year. Frank Kenison was the longest serving Chief Justice in New Hampshire history (1952 - 1977), and our State Supreme Court building is named in his honor.
On November 8, 2012, also at 5:30 p.m., Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman of the Court of Appeals for New York will be on campus to deliver the inaugural Norman H. Stahl Lecture. Judge Stahl is a New Hampshire native and was a very highly respected lawyer in Manchester before joining the U.S. District Court here. He was later appointed to the First Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston, where he still sits in senior status. Judge Lippman recently announced the details of a new rule - the first of its kind in the nation - requiring law students to perform 50 hours of unpaid work as a condition of practicing in New York. The rule requires law students to do pro bono work for the poor, nonprofit or civil rights groups, or any of the three branches of government, between the first year of law school and the time they apply for a license.
I encourage you to attend each of these events...they are a wonderful way to be involved with New Hampshire's only law school!
Best regards,
Holly J. Kilibarda, President
New Hampshire Women's Bar Association

Going Beyond: Communication Strategies for More Effective Leadership and Problem Solving
With Jessica Lyons of Transpective Business Consulting, Inc.
When: Thursday, November 15, 2012
Time: 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
Where: Nixon Peabody
900 Elm Street
Manchester, NH
Cost: $25
Today's women in business are more dynamic, educated and engaged than ever before. Since 2000, women represent at least 57% of undergraduates, and 47.2% of 2010 J.D. graduates were female. Still, barriers to achievement and success persist; since 2001 there has been a 23% gender pay gap with some research even indicating that this increases with education. Among Fortune 500 companies, women occupy 15% of the board seats and only 3% of CEOs are women. We will explore what women can do to challenge these statistics and access their full potential in order to create a more satisfying and rewarding professional experience.
Women bring tremendous strengths and talents to leadership positions. They tend to be highly collaborative, engaging and thorough. These traits lead to success in a variety of roles including networking, leadership, being part of a team and navigating change. Despite these strides, women often report feeling disempowered and stuck when encountering someone who does not respond to their communication style.
Drawing from the DiSCİ model, we will examine four communication styles which can be used to achieve more effective problem solving and leadership. Unlike others, this model is designed to identify behavioral "comfort zones" rather than personality dimensions. Participants will be coached on how to identify their preferred style as well as preferred styles of others. Once you have gained these insights, you will have a strategy for how to communicate with anyone in any situation. As a follow-up, participants will have the opportunity to complete a DiSC Assessment at a later date for a more in-depth analysis of their default style.

National Association of Women Lawyers
Releases the Results of its Seventh Annual Survey on the Retention and Promotion
of Women in Law Firms
This week, the National Association of Women Lawyers (NAWL) released the results of its Seventh Annual Survey on the Retention and Promotion of Women in Law Firms. The Survey is the only national study of the nation's 200 largest law firms which annually tracks the progress of women lawyers at all levels of private practice and collects data on firms as a whole rather than from a subset of individual lawyers. The Survey once again found that women's compensation lags behind men's at all levels, although this year the gap between male and female equity partner compensation has narrowed slightly. The Survey also found that women are increasingly clustered in positions - such as staff attorney, counsel, and fixed-income equity partner - with little opportunity for advancement or participation in law firm leadership.
