Is "March Madness" at school
creating too much pressure for your child?
What are the signs? What can you do about it?
|

It's March Madness out there. Teachers are under pressure to get their curriculum done by the end of the school year, just a few months away. Are they passing that pressure along to your child?
Winter weather caused havoc with the academic calendar. And as we head into warmer months, school field trips and parties will take up even more time, creating even more pressure for school administrators to accomplish the standardized curriculum tasks, as required by federal guidelines. Administrators increase demands on teachers, who inadvertently pass that pressure along to students, whether through an increased homework load or simply a heightened emotional level in the classroom.
What are the signs of too much pressure?
Has your child started resisting going to school? Has there been a steady increase in the amount of time needed to get homework done? Have there been meltdowns? Crying in frustration over unrealistic demands?
Homework should be a shared happy time in the cozy sanctuary of home,
a time for your child to thrive as they demonstrate knowledge they have gained. Your child should easily get the answers right. No child should have meltdowns over their homework. Homework is a review of skills mastered in the classroom, not a time to re-teach what was misunderstood at school. Parents should glory in a child's success.
Is your child getting too much homework? The National Education Association cites recommendations for how much homework children should be expected to do -- 10 to 20 minutes in the first grade and an additional 10 minutes per grade thereafter.
- 10-20 minutes in Grade 1
- 20-30 minutes in Grade 2
- 30-40 minutes in Grade 3
What can be done?
If your child is struggling and you are highly visual with a visual family tree, call or email our office to schedule an appointment for a free initial consultation with me to find out how to work with your school.

Letter from a Maverick Mom
Every now and then I get a very nice letter or phone call from someone whose child has been through our training program. I can't help but want to share some of these, as I know many of you have been through the same situation and can understand how important certain milestones are. Here is one I received last month. This is what keeps me doing what I do. ~ CF
Hi Dr. Florance,
I am happy to write that my son has been doing great this year in 3rd grade. Remember how hard you and I worked to get him mainstreamed. He is doing so well working with his peers in the regular classroom. He participates in morning meeting, snack, reading, writing comprehension and math. He knows all the names of the students in the class, he has two friends he asks to sit next to.
They do an amazing job with peer modeling, one students gives him Lego magazines. He does one of your brain refresher before he starts his day, ranging from a hidden picture exercise, puzzle or mind game, it gets him ready and helps him focus, just as you told me it would.
Remember how we set up a plan to reduce and eliminate what his team called "aggressions" They are down to 0 daily, He also greets people unprompted, looks them in the eye, people he hasn't seen in years. He has begun to comment, like when his younger brother is crying he says '[My brother] is sad' or when they are hiking together he says to his brother, 'hold my hand."
We would not be here without your program, his brain is working fluidly, he is engaged, comprehending auditorially and beginning to express himself in ways we have never seen before. He recently had his 9th birthday. He surprised his father and me by grabbing his birthday cards and reading them out loud one by one, again a first. We have had many 'firsts' things we never dreamed we would see with our amazing son.
Again, thank you so much.

Dr. Cheri Florance pioneered the scientific basis for Brain Engineering to address language and communication problems originating in a strong visual brain interfering with the development of the auditory-verbal brain, sometimes mimicking the symptoms of Autism Spectrum, ADD, PDD, Aspergers and other disorders. She named this visual brain syndrome the "Maverick Mind," and wrote the book Maverick Mind based on her findings and her personal experience with her third child who was diagnosed as autistic, but who is now a college graduate and engineer, and completely symptom-free.
Dr. Florance now has an international practice, working with Mavericks all over North America and Europe, as well as Greece, Cyprus, Indonesia, Australia, South Africa, and South Korea. Her training programs and consultation practice follows best practice standards of the U.S. Dept. of Education, the National Institutes of Health, the World Health Organization, and the International Classification of Diseases.
