The first 6 weeks are the "make it or break it" period 

The first six weeks of a new school year are the "make it or break it" weeks in terms of teacher relationships and perceptions. Studies have shown that many conscious and subconscious beliefs about students are formed by faculty in the first two weeks and are confirmed in the following four weeks. We want our children to walk in the door of their new classroom with a sense of confidence, full of performance productivity and promise. We want them to look forward to the new school year.

 

When my children were young ...  

I remember clearly the day I took my middle son William to kindergarten. He was so eager to go to school like his big sister and so proud to carry his new backpack filled with supplies. He hopped out of the car and we walked into his classroom filled with lots of interesting posters and a great library. His terrific teacher, Mrs. H., was there to greet us.

 

As I drove away, with tears in my eyes, I said to myself, "Please Mrs. H, take good care of my boy. I am TRUSTING YOU!  That was about 24 years ago and now William is a chemical engineer on a global research team for Kraft, Inc. But I remember it as if it were yesterday.
