Hail to the humble tree!
Trees make a difference. In the open field or meadow or savannah the tree stands alone. Shade. A gathering place. Even a school. In any urban setting a tree is a treasure: in a park, a community asset; in a back yard, a source of pride and comfort. Consider the trees that grow through the decks of our classroom buildings and how our students love being able to sit right up against a tree that stands 60 or more feet tall. And we all treasure the feeling of seeing the majestic old trees around campus.
Some of the most important work done on this sylvan Burgundy campus of ours has been the planting and maintaining of hundreds of trees, and a major part of our recent first phase of Campus Renewal work has been the planting of dozens more of them. While many of these trees already are offering an aesthetic contribution with their flowering buds illuminating recently barren landscapes, their total majesty and contributions will not be experienced for years.
But, oh, how they will be treasured when those trees have grown into maturity. And when our newly planted heirloom fruit trees yield their fruit a few years down the line, we will be especially delighted! Happy spring. Planting a tree leaves a gift for future generations!

Substitute in Music Classes
We are pleased to announce that we have a new member of the Burgundy community! Music teacher Emily (McCrory) East gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Ryann Evelyn, yesterday. With Emily out for the rest of the school year, our frequent substitute Michael Shields will be taking over her classes using the lesson plans Emily thoughtfully prepared before going on maternity leave. Michael studied vocal performance at James Madison University and is excited to help the students have a strong musical finish to the year.
PAAS Meeting on May 9 Parents of African American Students will hold its next meeting on Monday, May 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the Middle School Atrium. We will continue to plan for the coming year, and we welcome your input.
Reminder: Author Visit Author Tom Watson will visit Burgundy on Tuesday, May 10, at 8:30 a.m. Grades 2-5 will be coming to his presentation, and students from other grades are welcome with teacher permission. If your student would like to order any of his books, please download and fill out an order form and return it with cash or check (made out to BFCDS). Orders are due by the end of the day today, Friday, April 29. He will also sign books after his presentation.
Save the Date: Loft Farewell June 11
Before Burgundy can begin our next Campus Renewal project--a new Arts & Community Center--we want to give the Loft a great farewell party! The Loft has been a wonderful, multi-use building that has been a hub for many Burgundy students since it was completed in 1969. Current and alumni families are invited to join us Saturday, June 11, 1-4 p.m. to celebrate the decades of great memories made in the Loft. As we finalize our plans in the coming weeks, we'll share more details--but for now, please mark your calendars!
Borrow a Burgundy Piano During construction of the new Arts & Community Center, Burgundy's pianos will need a temporary home off-campus. While the project is going on, music classes will utilize a trailer, and Middle School productions will be held in the theater at the George Washington Masonic National Memorial. We have two upright pianos and one grand piano. Families hosting the pianos will have the instrument and a bench and are welcome to play and use the pianos. These are acoustic instruments and will need to be tuned at the families' expense if they will be played.
The pianos will be moved out of the Loft in June 2016 at Burgundy's expense. Currently we anticipate the project will run about 15 months, but variables outside of our control (permitting, weather, availability of materials, etc.) could prolong the schedule. The pianos and benches will be returned to Burgundy after construction.
Full expectations for the care of the instruments will be detailed in a contract that host families will be required to sign. If you would be interested in being a host family for one of the pianos, please contact Cathy Manley at cathym@burgundyfarm.org.

Several excited students discovered our new water tables opened for play on Wednesday afternoon! Burgundy's Maintenance team built this custom feature that offers students of all ages an opportunity to play and learn about the fun and physics of water. A pump brings water to the top of four table levels, and children can adjust gates and dams to redirect the water in different directions as it makes its way down to the lower tables.
Earth Day Delegates Visit
Last Friday, Burgundy was happy to host Virginia state delegates Mark Sickles and Paul Krizek '76. The delegates presented a formal copy of House Resolution 218, which commends Burgundy on its 70th anniversary, and joined us to celebrate Earth Day. Along with Head of School Jeff Sindler, 8th graders Ahmad Dove, Gari Puckrein, Evan Roper, and Majlis Walker gave the delegates a tour of the Outdoor Classroom & Discovery Playground. They also gave the delegates Burgundy baseball caps and a photobook of the campus as a gift.
Thank You: Box Tops and Labels for Education Thank you, Burgundy families and friends! Our Box Top goal for this year has been smashed and left behind in the dust! We had hoped to raise $400 by the end of this year. With this recent collection we garnered another 1126 Box Tops this time for an additional $112.60 making our total thus far $649--and there is still one final collection to go! (Note that because of the Box Tops and Labels payout schedule, not all of this money will be received this fiscal year.) Many, many thanks to all of you for making this so successful.
Please note there will be one final collection in May, and there are many, many Box Tops that will expire this June so please double check your cabinets and storage drawers and get those Box Tops turned in before it is too late! Additionally, the Labels for Education program is being discontinued at the end of this school year, so the next collection is your very last chance to turn them in. Labels for Education points double in May so there is even more incentive!
This collection's totals: JK: 130 Box Tops, 42 Labels for Education K: 104 Box Tops, 13 Labels for Education 1st Grade: 30 Box Tops 2/3 Viceroys: 347 Box Tops, 21 Labels for Education 2/3 Buckeyes: 50 Box Tops 4/5 Coopers: 273 Box Tops, 84 Labels for Education 4/5 Redtails: 49 Box Tops, 4 Labels for Education Middle School: 75 Box Tops Main Office/Ex Day: 68 Box Tops
Bravo and thanks again to everyone who turned in Box Tops and Labels for Education! -- Jenny Friedl |
