Snowman See You Tomorrow at the Auction!

What a wonder-ous place Burgundy is! After nearly 10 years, I am still moved by the beauty of our campus, the spirit of our students, and the strength of our community. All of these things and more will be celebrated tomorrow night at Burgundy's 34th Annual Auction, The Wonder of Burgundy.

We'll come together -- adults, kid-free! -- to toast the amazing, unique Burgundy experience, and bid and have fun in order to share that experience with even more students. As you know, Auction proceeds from live and silent auction items, raffles, and contributions, detailed in our catalog, support financial aid. A big thanks to co-chairs Ann Grillo and Moley Evans, who have put in so much time and effort to make tomorrow night wonderful!

I'm happy to announce that Neena Robertson '93 will join us to talk about how her Burgundy education has shaped her life and how the financial aid that we raise at events like this one helped her and her sister attend Burgundy.

The 'elegant fun' begins at 5:30 p.m. in the space that we generally call the Gym, but tomorrow it will be a rustic, shimmering wonderland. We hope you can join us! But if you can't, please know you will be missed.

While it is too late to RSVP online, come early to register at the door. And of course, we always welcome a direct contribution to Burgundy to support our amazing students and wonderful community.

For more than five years, alumni parent Catherine Joyce (mom of Burgundy alum Ethan Steinberg '14) has sponsored a dance for foster and underprivileged children in Alexandria. This year the dance took place on Friday, February 26th at the Durant Center. A large group of Burgundy 7th and 8th graders volunteered to help set up the event, organize donated books, serve food, and help with crafts. Current Burgundy parents Rachel MacKnight and Jane Marcus organized the small game room for the younger children.

Black History Walking Tour of Alexandria

If you've been at Burgundy for any length of time, you probably know Leslie Summey--short hair (blond of late), short stature, and big voice, especially when she belts out a Nancy Wilson ballad. Her husband, Harold, is more of the strong, silent type--the kind who speaks only when he has something important to say. And this past Sunday, he had lots of important information to share.

He hosted a black history walking tour of Alexandria and led a group of 20 Burgundy parents, students and administrators around town, visiting schools and prisons and cemeteries and churches, all rooted in the black struggle for equality. It was a fascinating tour, shedding new light on structures and landmarks we pass every day and take for granted. The tour, slated for two hours, lasted well over three and held everyone's attention, even that of the little ones.

This was a Black History Month special event, hosted by Parents of African American Students; let's hope Harold does it again next year!
