This week we celebrated an important annual rite of fall at Burgundy, the International Day of Peace. The school came together Monday for lunch in the Amphitheater. Buddy classes shared a picnic lunch outdoors and took in the program together. A bell was rung shortly after noon, and the United Nations proclamation establishing Peace Day was read as Burgundy joined people around the world honoring the importance of peace to the sustainability and thriving of all humankind.
Cindy Woodruff, the new Burgundy librarian joining Barbara Krainik, is Co-Founder and President of the Peace Study Center, a nonprofit that offers a summer camp for youth and provides resources and training for educators. Accordingly, Cindy led our Peace Day celebration and provided resources for teachers and their classes. We thank her!
Cindy says: "It was a pleasure to help plan the International Day of Peace gathering on Monday. Bringing the Burgundy community together in the woods was a great way to start our event. I loved watching the JK children share their peace birds. The Spanish classes shared famous quotes about peace. French students sang Enfant de Paix... We rang the peace with groups around the world as we recognized the United Nations proclamation for this annual day of peace and nonviolence." In my brief remarks after the program I reminded students that school, beyond the purely academic skills and habits learned, is also very much about preparing for life. Peace and peacefulness in the world arise from our habits learned and practiced at home and at school. We will make our families and communities stronger and the world a better place if we embrace principles such as non-violence, respect and collaboration that promote peace.

Pizza Fridays will start soon! Pre-order now to help the 8th grade class attend Wilderness Adventure.
|
8th Grade Pizza Sales The 8th grade class will be selling pizza on select Fridays throughout the year to support the class tradition of going to Wilderness Adventure at the end of the school year. Wilderness Adventure is an adventure-based camp with group physical activites and teambuilding; a great opportunity for 8th graders to work together one more time before graduation. The students worked hard to find the best Fridays for pizza and to get a good deal. This year pizza (cheese only) will be ordered from Paisano's. Juice will not be served this year; please plan accordingly. Find dates, other details, and our pre-order form online (PDF). We encourage families to pre-order their pizza for the entire year as this gets you a discount and makes it easier for our 8th grade planners. Return the form (linked above) and payment (checks made out to BFCDS) to your child's homeroom teacher by Friday, October 2. Pizza is also available on a week-by-week basis; orders and payments must be received by Wednesday of the pizza sale week. Please contact Steve LeBoo with any questions. The Class of 2016 thanks you for your support and we look forward to delivering pizza! Help Us Prepare for the Fall Fair The Fall Fair -- this year on Saturday, October 17, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. -- is one of Burgundy's signature events, and it attracts hundreds of people to campus each year. We're happy to announce the fan favorite Haunted House will be back this year! More details to come on that. To make sure everyone has lot of fun at all our activities, we count on parents to participate in volunteer shifts, and hope that you may also have donations for our sales. Remember, proceeds from the event benefit student financial aid, so we want to have a successful Fair! Label any loaned items, so that we can return them before October 31! Box Tops for Burgundy Burgundy has many partnerships with organizations that help bring in more revenue for the school, and by doing a few very small (easy!) things, you can make a huge difference. This year's affinity program coordinator, Jenny Friedl, parent of Porter (2nd grade Viceroy), Lindy (Kindergarten Penguin) and Tyler (Kindergarten Polar Bear) welcomes questions, comments, or suggestions at jnfriedl@gmail.com. Jenny will be sharing information about ways to help; today's focus is Box Tops for Education. We really win with this one! We send them trash, and they send us money. Each Box Top is worth 10 cents, and they really add up fast. Box Tops can be found on hundreds of products and all you need to do is cut (or rip) the Box Top symbol off and send them in to school. Box Tops can be turned in at the main office, individual classrooms, and the Middle School atrium. We will be doing a monthly tally of the Box Tops collected at each location so start adding to your class's numbers now! Bring them loose, in bags or envelopes, or you can tape or glue them (no staples please) to a collection sheet -- a quick Google search turns up gazillions of links and examples. Please don't throw out (or recycle) money that can be used in our classrooms! Sign up for Box Tops emails by September 30 to earn 5 bonus Box Tops for Burgundy! Use Burgundy's school ID 385163 and you'll get coupons and other promotions while we get 5 extra Box Tops.
