Burgundy on Broadway: Changes

On Thursday, February 26 and Friday, February 27 at 7 p.m in the Loft the sixth grade class will be performing Burgundy on Broadway. The theme for Burgundy on Broadway this year is Changes.

"The title of the play reflects many things," explained Musical Director Cathy Manley. "Changes is what the middle school years are all about. We have discussed how songs affect political changes, the power of song in peoples lives, the theme of change in all of our lives. Then there are all of the changes going on at Burgundy this year with the new playground, teachers and staff changing."

Each year all of the songs and themes are picked out by Cathy. This year's Burgundy on Broadway will feature many different songs and dance numbers including "Changes" by David Bowie, "Expressing Yourself" from the musical Billy Elliot, "Music Changes" from the musical Grease, "Revolting Children" from the musical Matilda, and much more. Also be on the lookout for a special guest artist during the show!

"There are big group dance numbers featuring everything from Motown to contemporary," Cathy said. "You will hear solos, duets, and small group features. Many of the songs show each individual student's acting abilities and expression of serious and funny emotions."

Burgundy on Broadway is an annual tradition that has been here at Burgundy for more than a decade. It is also a rite of passage for the newest middle school students. "You're not an official middle school student until you have finished Burgundy on Broadway," Emily "EJ" Jonas, 8th Grade Homeroom/Humanities Teacher, told my class.

Many of the students parents have been volunteering to help Cathy. Some parents have been lending their expertise with costume design, painting the set, lighting and special effects, along with many other things.

"The kids have felt exhilarated and the word pressure is not in their common language," Cathy said. "They like performing, have stayed on track and are focused. I'm impressed with their ability to take care of each other and to support one another in various ways."
