Jeff

We were excited to see work resume this week on the Outdoor Classroom and Discovery Playground. Of course, we are all eager for this project to be complete! There have been several factors contributing to delays, including wet winter weather, materials on backorder, and change orders for some parts of the project. (Changes orders are very common in construction projects when necessary adjustments are made to the plans.)

We are pushing in every way to complete construction and have the playground open -- as soon as possible! If you want to see the progress, the Advancement office upstairs in West Barn has the best views. Stop by (use the new bridge behind the First Grade building, walk past the Early Childhood classrooms, and climb the stairs) or contact Jen Pusatere if you'd like to set up a time to talk about Campus Renewal.

At the same time, planning for the new Community and Arts building -- which will eventually replace the Loft -- continues. We are drawing lessons from our first phase of Campus Renewal that will help as we execute that next project. We don't know yet when that construction will begin, but it will not be in the immediate future. I heard a rumor the other day from one of our students that the Loft would be out of use in preparation for demolition following our upcoming Burgundy on Broadway performances (February 26 and 27, mark your calendars!). I wish! We're doing planning work, but  we have no timetable for construction at this point. Of course, as soon as we do we will let you know!

Meanwhile, we are deep into the admission season. Re-enrollment contracts have been issued, shadow days are happening each week, and Lori Adams and the Early Childhood teachers have been hosting prospective families and conducting admission testing on Saturdays. Many parents and students have led open house tours. Maybe you've gotten or will receive phone calls from prospective parents. I hope that when you interact with these interested families, you'll think back to your early visits to Burgundy, and help them see what you saw in our school when you first encountered Burgundy.

Have a great weekend. I hope to see many of you at the Annual Meeting Tuesday evening.

Coming Up at Burgundy ...

Auction Update: Catalog Advertisements

AuctionA month from now, you'll be paging through the auction catalog, picking out the items your family will love best. Do you know a business who would like to advertise within those pages? They're a great introduction to the Burgundy community, or can highlight a donated auction item to drum up even more interest. Ads are available beginning at $50. Order an advertisement by filling out a donor form (PDF) -- if you are making other auction donations, one form will suffice. Camera-ready, print-quality ads are due by close of business on Monday, February 16. Questions? Contact Meghan Williams.

Burgundy Bulletin

Burgundy clarinetists Nick Sansone, 8th grade, and Isaac Ahdoot, 7th grade, recently auditioned and won spots in a competitive district band for middle school students. The band, a project of the Virginia Band & Orchestra Directors' Association, will hold a performance Saturday, February 7, 3 p.m. at Hayfield Secondary School, 7630 Telegraph Road, Alexandria.

Burgundy alumna Ashley Ware Jenkins '98 will perform "Ware's the Disconnect? A Cabaret" on Monday, February 9 at MetroStage, 1201 N. Royal St., Alexandria. The show, created by Ashley, is a musical exploration of our connection to the world around us. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door.

CookiesIt's almost Girl Scout cookie time at Burgundy! Burgundy's Junior Girl Scout troop (4th grade) and Brownie troop (2nd grade) will be selling Girl Scout cookies near the blacktop on Thursday, February 19, and Friday, February 20 during afternoon carpool. In addition to their scouting duties, the girls will be donating some of the proceeds back to Burgundy. Cookies are $4 per box and cash is preferred. On sale will be Thin Mints, Trefoils, Savannah Smiles, Samoas, and new this year -- Rah-Rah Raisins! There will also be a limited number of gluten-free cookies, Toffee-Tastics, for $5 per box. Which is your favorite? Contact Karen Kizer or Tovah Ravitz-Meehan with questions.

Family Fitness Night: Thank You!

A huge thank you to the families that braved a chilly Sunday night to participate in the BPA's first family fitness night on January 25! We had a great time working out, enjoying healthy snacks, and relaxing with mini massage and acupuncture sessions. A special thank you to Lia Miller-Spicer, Johnnie Spicer, Tracey Coates and James Waggoner for organizing a great evening and to the wellness practitioners who kindly volunteered their time: Larissa Miller, Arrion Holt, Brett Eaton, Jaeda Raines, Kelly Tenorio, and Sandra Owen Kelly.
