Jeff

First, a happy Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday to you all! I am proud that we have so many service projects going in honor of this holiday and what Dr. King stood for -- equal opportunity, justice and respect for all. I look forward to seeing the continued work of some of our class projects and to visiting the middle school service sites on Monday.

Wednesday I was happy to attend a home varsity boys' and girls' basketball game double-header vs. Capitol Hill Day School.

The varsity boys lost a tough game but kept competitive against a talented team with a six-foot-four star player; our boys demonstrated courage and toughness and made dramatic improvement during the game.

The girls were losing 6-5 at one point early in the second quarter and scored the next 18 points of the game to race out to a 24-6 lead, going on to win the game. They too played with courage and with unselfishness and fierce determination.

Then, less than an hour after the girls' game concluded, the 8th graders had their final choral and instrumental concert in the Loft. The entire class was dressed in blazers with slacks and dresses, and they presented a range of music, including songs like the Queen classic "Bohemian Rhapsody" and a group performance of "Phantom of the Opera." It was rewarding for teachers and parents and students themselves to witness our 8th graders blending their talents that they've developed at Burgundy over the years in a final concert that signals both the culmination of several years of music instruction (not least the fifth year and end of the first cycle of the instrumental music program introduced five years ago) and the approach of their Burgundy graduation (gasp!).

Auction Update: Solicitations and Donations

Auction logoEven though it's the dark of winter now, you'll have an opportunity to shine bright before long! Burgundy's Annual Auction is Saturday, March 7, and this year we celebrate the theme "Shine Bright like a diamond." As many of you know, the auction is our school's primary fundraiser -- all proceeds benefit financial aid, which helps one in five Burgundy students. The evening will include a delicious catered dinner, drinks and dancing, mingling with friends, and of course, fabulous auction items!

Auction Co-Chairs Jacqueline Norris and Nancy Weissman distributed a letter via US Mail this week that will answer most of your questions, and you will continue to hear more about the auction in upcoming issues of Constant Comment. You can also find more information about the auction, as well as supporting documents, on Burgundy's website. Contact co-chairs Jacqueline Norris and Nancy Weissman at any time with questions.

We hope to have support from every Burgundy family, and there are some ways you can get involved immediately; for instance, by soliciting businesses or donating items purchased from a business. Learn more online!

BPA Meeting and Fitness Fun

Due to this week's weather delay, the BPA Room Parent meeting has been rescheduled for Wednesday, January 21, 8:30-10 a.m. in the Library. All parents are welcome! No RSVP needed.

The Burgundy Parent Association invites families and kids of all ages to a Family Fun night centered around family fitness on Sunday, January 25, 6-8 p.m. in the Gym. A personal trainer will lead the group in a 30-minute exercise followed by a break for food and mingling.  Then, families can continue to burn calories and have fun with 30 minutes of Zumba. During the group exercise activities, massage therapists will give chair massages and talk about the importance of stretching and massage. A meditation will close the program. Get your body moving and shake off the winter blahs! Please RSVP if you plan to attend.
