On Monday I had the privilege of having lunch with 20 3rd Grade Buckeye and Viceroy Girl Scouts. They recently raised $700 from their cookie sales and generously donated $500 of their profits to Burgundy's Annual Giving Fund.

As I was thanking them for their donation, one student said, "Burgundy is the best school ever." Her friends quickly and unanimously supported that statement, and another went on to say, "I can't imagine being at any school besides Burgundy."

The next morning, as I was helping a student at carpool, I heard his mother tell him, "Have a great day!" She followed up with, "How could you not? It's Burgundy!"

I think we can all agree that Burgundy is a very special place. We have two beautiful campuses rich with learning opportunities and an equally expansive community. Most important, we have incredible teachers and wonderful students. Our students and teachers are the reasons we exist, and in so many ways, they define everything that makes Burgundy so special.

That's why Annual Giving is such a critical effort. Every penny we earn supports the extraordinary teaching and learning that Burgundy offers. THANK YOU to everyone who has already made a gift to Annual Giving -- you have helped us raise $234,721. As we close these final two weeks of school, I would like to ask those of you who have not yet made a gift to make a contribution to Annual Giving. To create a true success story, for our teachers and our students, we need your help. As we come down the final stretch, I hope you will consider making a gift to help us raise the last $15,279 to our goal.

Please make a gift in support of teaching and learning, and help carry the Burgundy legacy forward.

Sincerely,
Jen

Congratulations, Boys' Lacrosse and Girls' Softball Teams!

The Blazer Boys' Lacrosse and Girls' Softball teams have wrapped up a rain-shortened, busy season.

The boys ended their season on a high note beating St. Thomas at home. They stuck together and worked well as a team to improve throughout the season. Consisting primarily of sixth- and seventh-graders, a solid foundation has been set for next season. Great job to the entire team, and thanks to the fantastic coaches.

The girls have played every game close and have come a long way. Especially considering the crazy spring schedule, they have improved immensely, particularly in their batting. Great job, girls!

We would like to give a special thanks to our departing eighth-graders: Abbas Ali, Tomas Camacho, Peter Devlin, Catherine Mellette, Thea Mills, Ahmei Thevoz, Jackie Thomas, and Brianna Wilson. Great job, Blazers, and good luck in the future!

Book Fair: Thank You
Thank you to all the families who supported the Library by purchasing books at the Book Fair last week. It was an incredibly successful event!

A big thank you as well to all our volunteers who worked tirelessly before, during, and after the week of sales.

Enjoy your summer reading!
Volunteer Appreciation Ice Cream Social: Friday, June 6

Please join us on the Blacktop on Friday, June 6, between 12:30 and 2:00 p.m., to enjoy excellent company and a variety of tasty treats from our very cool ice cream truck.

The gathering is to thank and honor those who serve Burgundy in so many ways -- on the Board of Trustees, through the Burgundy Parent Association, as Room Parents, at the Fall Fair and Auction, through our arts programs, in the classrooms and the Library, at Cooper's Cove, and as Admission tour guides, just to name a few.

We applaud volunteers of our extended Burgundy family: alumni, alumni parents, grandparents and friends. We also salute departing Burgundy parents of graduating students and celebrate their careers of service to Burgundy.

This is an informal and joyous gathering with remarks from Jeff Sindler at 1:00 p.m.

We hope to see you there!

2014-2015 Staffing Updates

We are excited to welcome for the 2014-2015 school year the following teachers, who in their interviews and demonstration lessons displayed understanding of Burgundy's progressive model and immediately connecting with our students:

Kindergarten Penguins: Elizabeth Abramson

Elizabeth comes to Burgundy most recently from Kingsbury Day School in Washington, D.C., where she has taught 2nd Grade students with learning differences for the past year. Additional experience includes providing academic enrichment at St. Stephen's & St. Agnes and co-teaching at the innovative Blue School in New York, where she created emergent curriculum based on student interest that fostered social and academic growth through hands-on experiences. Elizabeth earned her M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Virginia and her B.S. in Early Childhood Education from the University of Vermont.

1st Grade Sheep: Nicole Pagett

(Interim teacher, for one year, while Kira Cotter returns to graduate school)

Nicole is a caring and committed teacher who believes in the teacher as a facilitator of learning and who celebrates every child's individual gifts, talents, and accomplishments. Most recently, she has taught at Beverley Hills Church Preschool in Alexandria for five years, and she has nine years of additional experience teaching Kindergarten and 1st Grade at schools in Virginia, England and Guam. Some of you may already know Nicole as mom to Sam Pagett '21, who is finishing his year as a 1st Grade Sheep. Nicole earned her M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from National-Louis University and her B.S. in Human Development and Family Studies from Colorado State University.

2/3 Viceroys: Kayla Parton

Kayla is relocating to Alexandria from Charlotte, North Carolina, where she has worked for three years as a Kindergarten teacher and one year as a 3rd Grade teacher at Pitts School Road Elementary School. Kayla has a superb understanding of children's needs and differentiated instruction; her goals are to provide an equitable education that welcomes diversity, highlights multiple intelligences and challenges all students to reach their highest potential. Kayla earned her M.Ed. and B.A. in Elementary Education from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

4/5 Redtails: Zoe Bailey

Zoe Bailey will come to Burgundy from The Orchard School, a progressive school on 50 acres in Indianapolis that emphasizes "Nature as a Teacher." Zoe brings eight years of experience teaching preschool through 3rd Grade with a focus on hands-on, child-centered teaching practices and experience in team teaching. She is able to create a classroom with discipline and structure while facilitating a joyful energy that embraces mistakes as part of the learning process. Zoe earned her M.S. in Education and her B.A. in Psychology and Sociology from Indiana University.

CRI Update
Last week, the first of the construction fencing was installed in preparation for construction equipment and workers to begin their work. Additionally, surveyors were on campus marking the boundaries and locations of fences and other parts of the project's work site.
This week, Miss Utility and all of their different utility locators were on campus marking and locating the utility lines, so digging can be done safely.  This is a requirement that must be completed before any further work can begin.

Next week, mandatory meetings with Fairfax County will occur Friday with the contractors, so that installation of erosion control measures can begin on Monday of the following week.

Please remember that we ask parents to check in at the Main Office when they are visiting the campus. Visitor badges will be issued, and any special instructions related to the construction will be passed along at that time.

No changes in the campus pathways are anticipated for the week of May 26-30.

If you have any questions, please contact Larry Inguagiato (larryi@burgundyfarm.org).  Thank you for your patience.
