Over the past week, I have had the pleasure of catching sneak peeks and a full-blown preview of this year's 8th Grade Musical, The Wizard of Oz. I have to tell you that I am especially excited for this year's musical. The story is a perfect choice for an elementary-middle school and casts wonderfully well for this year's eighth-graders. Audiences will love the familiar plot and characters and the great song and dance numbers.
Opening Night was Thursday, and I plan to bring my family this evening. I hope that you, too, will join us tonight or tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. in the Loft to see the 8th Grade Musical, one of my favorite annual traditions. It is a final opportunity to see our soon-to-be-graduates take the stage, which they do with remarkable poise and confidence and joy.
As Head of School, I appreciate through the 8th Grade Musical how each student has grown at Burgundy, whether he or she has been here for one year or 10. This year's musical is especially poignant as we consider themes in The Wizard of Oz, one of which is that we can always return to our families, and that we have the freedom to define "family" in any way we'd like.
While Dorothy and Gale, in their quest to return home, always consider Auntie Em and Toto to be family, for instance, their connections to the Lion, Scarecrow and Tin Man strengthen as they overcome challenges together. Eventually, Dorothy and Gale consider their new friends to be family as well.
Growing and learning at Burgundy is similar. Our students build lifelong friendships with each other, and enduring connections with their teachers and with many of our staff and administrators. It is affirming to hear about alumni who, decades after graduating, continue to gather with their classmates and to stay in touch with Burgundy teachers and staff.
To the Class of 2014, congratulations! Not only for your roles in making The Wizard of Oz such a joy to watch, but also for your roles in shaping Burgundy's storyline. I know that you, like Dorothy and Gale, have so much strength and courage and potential, and you've shared your gifts with us in many ways through the years. Looking ahead, I know that you have all the tools you need to conquer any challenges that may await you. And no matter what, you know that you can always come home to Burgundy.
Sincerely,
Jeff Sindler Head of School |

Student Spotlight: The Wizard of OzLydia Tetrault Tornado, Poppy, Tree, Osian, Tough Guy, Dance Captain
Q. What has been the most fun aspect of preparing for this production? A. I have had so much fun learning all of the dances for the production and getting to perform them in front of my class.
Q. In your opinion, what is the most important theme of The Wizard of Oz? A. I think that "home is where the heart is" is actually very true, and I think that this is important to understand. The Wizard of Oz really displays that notion.
Q. Why are you most excited to share this musical with the Burgundy community? A. I am so excited for the Burgundy community to really see how hard this musical is to pull off. We worked so hard on this, and I hope people can see that through the production. |
Service Spotlight
Each year on a Saturday in May, U.S. Postal workers collect non-perishable food from residents along their routes as they deliver mail. They deliver the food to local post offices as they return from their routes, and the food must then be delivered to local organizations that can warehouse the food and distribute it to people in need.
This year's collection was on Saturday, May 10, and that afternoon, Burgundy Middle School students, along with Middle School parents, helped sort the food as it arrived at both the Duke Street and Franconia Post Offices in Alexandria. They loaded the food into trucks and brought it to the ALIVE warehouse in Old Town. Another group of students and parents worked at the warehouse on Sunday afternoon, sorting and storing the food for distribution at ALIVE's "Last Saturday" food distributions as well as to individual families. ALIVE representatives told us that people were very generous this year, and they got almost twice as much food as was collected in last year's USPS drive.
Below is part of an email that came from a contact at ALIVE:
I wanted to let you know how amazing your families were who helped us on Saturday. We estimate that we collected 12,520 lbs of food! A record for this event! Your families were all so great...it was hot and dirty work, and they all stayed later than we expected they would need to due to the huge amount of food! One dad and son even stayed with us to unload at our warehouse and didn't get out of there until 9:30!

Spaces Still Available for Burgundy Farm Summer Day Camp!
Parents, do you know what your children will be doing this summer? Do they enjoy swimming, exploring nature, arts and crafts, drama, photography, and computers, and hanging out with friends in the summer sun? You may want to consider the Burgundy Farm Summer Day Camp, which offers all of the above plus much, much more. We still have spots available for children ages 3 3/4 - 12 years old in our program, which runs from June 16 through the week of August 4.
Is your child too old to be a camper? Take a look at our CIT (Counselor-in-Training) program for 13- to 16-year-olds. CITs work closely under the supervision of our summer staff to help provide a wonderful experience for our campers; they gain confidence as they take on daily camp responsibilities, learn what it is like to be camp counselors, and have plenty of summer fun! For more information on all of the above mentioned programs, and to register, visit the Summer Day Camp page of the Burgundy website. Or, contact Hugh Squire at hughs@burgudyfarm.org with any questions. The Burgundy Farm Summer Day Camp: The Camp Where Every Kid Belongs!

Box Tops for Education: We Exceeded Our Goal!
We have received our final check from Box Tops for Education for the 2013-2014 school year, earning a total of $339.90. Our goal for this school year was $250. We exceeded that goal by over 35%!
We have set a lofty goal of $350.00 for next year. In order to reach that goal it is important to continue collecting Box Tops for the remainder of the school year and throughout the summer.
Remember that you can turn Box Tops in to the Main Office or the Advancement Office at any time. Click here to download a collection sheet that makes it fun and easy to keep track of all your Box Tops!
If you have any questions, please contact Michele McCabe (michelem@burgundyfarm.org or 703.842.0470).
