Sunday through Wednesday I was in Norfolk leading an accreditation visit, and it was thrilling to see and feel spring burst into being during an otherwise hectic, though rewarding, visit. In years like this the arrival of spring feels so much more sudden, and our gratitude is off the charts! The combination of longer days and sunshine and milder temperatures and flowers blooming after a long, cold, snowy winter really are a rebirth of sorts. As I hear Tatum rattling on from the backseat about flowers waking up and trees getting back their leaves, trying to retell explanations we have been giving her all winter about where the tree's leaves went and why the plants are brown and dead-looking, I think of a favorite e.e. cummings poem, [i thank You God for most this amazing], about the birth and re-birth implied in spring's arrival. In part, the poem reads: "i who have died am alive again today and this is the sun's birthday; this is the birth day of life and love and wings...(now the ears of my ears awake and now the eyes of my eyes are opened)." I love those last words. We are re-awakened in spring to the beauty of life all around us.
I experienced a parallel burst of energy and optimism and enthusiasm in the school I was visiting this week. It is the same energy Burgundy and all great schools inspire in children every day. I am joyful to be back at my own school at week's end and enjoying the laughter of our Burgundy children and my own child as we are rejuvenated and 'reborn' in spring! Note: the full text as well as the poet reading his poem are available via this link: I like this one, which includes a recording of Cummings reading it: http://www.davidlose.net/2013/11/i-thank-you-god-for-most-this-amazing/. Sincerely,

Sevareid Forum on April 16: Children, Teens & TechnologyWe hope you will join us for the 2014 Lois and Eric Sevareid Forum on Wednesday, April 16, at 7:00 p.m. in the Gym. We are excited to welcome nationally recognized Internet safety experts Marje Monroe and Doug Fodeman, who will discuss the use and impact of technology on child and adolescent development, offering concrete and real-life strategies on this important topic. Marje and Doug's workshop with parents on Wednesday evening will be the culmination of a full-day workshop with our students and teachers. Before their visit, we will conduct surveys of our students' behavior online, providing Marje and Doug with a snapshot of what is happening in our community and how it compares to trends across the country. They will use this data as a jumping off point for discussions with students in Grades 4 through 8 during the school day, and they will share their insight with staff and teachers at a faculty meeting that afternoon. Director of Finance and Operations
Director of Finance and Operations Mary Mehala is transitioning away from Burgundy. Although Mary's move had been slated for late June, she has requested an early release from her contract, in order to focus on her twin 8th grade girls' high school placements and to begin to focus on her job transition. We thank Mary for all of her hard work as she helped us regroup following a very tough period in our business office after our former Director of Finance Cathy Coakley's death. Mary has made lasting contributions, and we wish her the very best.
The business office will function normally with Kim Britton and Jamie Dorrier while we finish a search for our new Director of Finance and Operations. Sam Awotwi, who previously has served as an Interim Director of Finance for us, after Cathy Coakley's passing, is going to give us support as needed.
The search and hiring process for a new Director of Finance and Operations is underway, with a committee of faculty, staff and administrators, and parents.
If you would like to contact Mary, you may contact her at mymehala@me.com.

Congratulations, Destination Imagination Teams!
Participating in Destination Imagination-a volunteer-led competition that celebrates creativity-has become a tradition at Burgundy. And this is another banner year! After several months of "going to extremes" and learning to "laugh ART loud," the teams deliv ered great performances. Three teams placed second at the regional tournament in Stafford, VA, and two teams will advance to the state tournament, in Harrisonburg, VA, on April 5.
Good luck to the 6th-grade team D.I.E. (Chloe, Gari, Lily, Riley, Sophia and Violet) and the 4/5 Pirate Kittens (Ena, Fiona, Huit, Jordan, Mark, Owen, Reid and Sam). The 8th-grade team jEtcabS (Ahmei, Brielle, Catherine, Jackie and Thea) was invited to state but cannot attend due to scheduling conflicts.

April Showers Bring Spring Flowers
With the snow behind us (hopefully), let's enjoy the sunshine!
For winter's rains and ruins are over,
And all the season of snows and sins;
The days dividing lover and lover,
The light that loses, the night that wins;
And time remembered is grief forgotten,
And frosts are slain and flowers begotten,
And in green underwood and cover Blossom by blossom the spring begins.
For more information about celebration of spring or other cultural events and activities, please log on to the Inclusivity@Burgundy Haiku page; this is a hub of information and activity regarding inclusion on the Burgundy campus and in the larger community.
Other events in April:
- National Poetry Month (United States)
- Confederate History Month (southern United States)
- Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day - April 24
- Freedom Day (South Africa) - April 27
- Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work Day, usually fourth Thursday (United States)

American Promise Community Discussion Postponed
We will reschedule our community viewing and discussion of the film American Promise to the 2014-2015 school year.
We highly encourage parents to view the film together in small groups and engage in discussions. Feel free to check the film out of our Burgundy Library.
Below are some essential questions to reflect upon during your discussion:
- At Burgundy, we frequently talk about meeting students where they are because of who they are, respecting their backgrounds and life experiences while building on them. In your opinion, how does Burgundy meet various kinds of diversity among our students (i.e. gender, race, ethnicity, ability/disability, religion, sexual orientation, age, and/or socioeconomic status)?
- In most institutions and/or organizations, the members often think about best fit and mission-appropriate community members. When thinking about independent schools, particularly Burgundy, do you believe that the school should acclimate to the student, or do you believe that it is the job of the student to acclimate to the school?
To learn more about American Promise and to view the trailer, please visit the film's website.

Community Service
Middle School parents and students, as part of our Community Service Program, are planning to work on building a playground in a now-bare lot behind Community Lodgings Affordable Housing units. Community Lodgings is an Alexandria non-profit with which we have worked for several years. (Last year we decorated an entire apartment for one of their Transitional Housing units). Needless to say, we're trying to do the job on a budget.
A group of students and parents met today to discuss ideas for this playground and thought that it might be a cool idea to have, as one of our play elements, a small boat that young children could climb in/on and use for imaginative play--an ocean liner, a sail boat, a life boat after a shipwreck, a space ship, or...??
If any of you, or your neighbors or friends have an old rowboat, canoe or sunfish (nothing bigger!) you might consider donating, we'd love to have it for our project. It doesn't have to be in great shape, and it certainly doesn't have to be seaworthy--we're expecting to repair and paint the boat in bright kid-friendly colors.
Since this project is for Community Lodgings, a registered 501c3 charity, any donor would, of course, receive a receipt for tax deduction purposes.
Charlene Pritzker, for the Community Lodgings Playground Committee
On Saturday, March 29, a small group of Burgundy Middle School students and parents, who were in town for all or part of spring break, worked last Saturday for ALIVE's food distribution at Cora Kelly Recreation Center in Alexandria. On the last Saturday of each month, when families have used up their food stamps and need additional help, ALIVE (Alexandrians Involved Ecumenically) distributes bags of food including non-perishable items, produce, meat and eggs to families in need at three different sites in Alexandria. We helped load the bags with food and then distributed them, loaded them in shopping carts, or served as runners, helping clients carry the food to their cars.
Picture is of Carrie Rawls working at ALIVE, loading bags full of non-perishable items.
