There are few neighborhoods, much less schools, where children have the freedom and independence to navigate a beautiful, open area without fear. A place where there is no fear of backpacks being stolen or not having help when you need it; a community of teachers and staff who not only educate and inspire, but who nurture and care.

You see, Burgundy instills a sense of confidence through self-discovery, allowing children to mature at their own pace within a world that in so many ways tries to force them to grow up too soon. It is a gift for us to be able to give this kind of growth and education to our children and to share in this process and community as parents. It is a far greater gift to be able to share in the experience with other Burgundy families, many who would not be able to enroll their children at Burgundy without the assistance of financial aid.

"Black & White and Burgundy: A Masquerade FUNdraiser for Financial Aid," being held this Saturday at 5:30 p.m., is the greatest effort that we put forth to raise money to share our gifts at Burgundy. For those of you who will be attending, you will enjoy a fabulous night filled with fun, food and drinks, and mingling with other Burgundy adults in a magically transformed gym. We hope that you'll enjoy all the revelry the evening has to offer, and we also hope you'll remember the reason for our gathering is a charitable cause: please donate and bid as generously as you are able. If you are unable to attend, please know that we will miss you.

Whether you are able to attend or not, we hope that each of you believes, as we do, that the Burgundy community is one worthy of support, and that you will consider making a direct contribution to financial aid.

We hope to see you Saturday!

Sincerely,

Amanda Traub and Jacqueline Norris

Auction Update: Catalogs
After months of preparation, the auction is tomorrow night, March 8, at 5:30 p.m. in the Gym. Please check your child's backpack for the auction catalog, which we sent home earlier this week
yesterday. One catalog goes home to each family, and it is your guide to all the evening's great happenings and exciting items. Don't forget to bring your catalog to the auction tomorrow night -- we will have a very limited supply at the event.
Congratulations, Class of 2016!
Congratulations to the Class of 2016, who performed two great shows of Burgundy on Broadway: Heroes and Legends last week. The entire production was a culmination of many months of hard work and collaboration, and each audience member reported different highlights that they particularly enjoyed. Here are a few of the Kindergarten Penguins' favorite parts of the show:

"My favorite part of the show was..."

"When the batman said 'I'm here to save the day.'" - Declan
"When I got to see my sister, Sophia." - Kate
"When the girl said 'Batman, can you take us to your batmobile?'" - Journey
"Everything!" - Julius
"When two guards were sitting out, and the guard on the castle said, 'I will blow my nose at you.'" - Elijah

Make sure you tell the sixth-graders what your favorite part of the show was!
American Promise Community Discussion: April 6

"All American families want to give their children the opportunity to succeed. But the truth is, opportunity is just the first step, particularly for families raising black boys. We hope American Promise shines a light on these issues."

- Michele Stephenson; Co-Producer, Co-Director

Our copy of American Promise is here! We are planning on watching the Sundance award-winning film as a community on April 6 at 5:00 p.m. in the Loft. We will be serving pizza and snacks during the showing, which will be followed by a community discussion facilitated by Leroy Nesbitt of the Black Student Fund and Stephanie Borges, our Director for an Inclusive Community.

We highly encourage parents to view the film together in small groups prior to our discussion. Small groups can check the film out of our Burgundy Library.

What:

  1. American Promise Community Screening, 5:00-6:30 p.m. (Pizza will be served)
  2. American Promise Community Discussion, 6:45- 8:15 p.m.

When: Sunday, April 6

Where: Loft

Essential Questions to reflect upon prior to our discussion:

  1. At Burgundy, we frequently talk about meeting students where they are because of who they are, respecting their backgrounds and life experiences while building on them. In your opinion, how does Burgundy meet various kinds of diversity among our students (i.e. gender, race, ethnicity, ability/disability, religion, sexual orientation, age, and/or socioeconomic status)?
  2. In most institutions and/or organizations, the members often think about best fit and mission-appropriate community members. When thinking about independent schools, particularly Burgundy, do you believe that the school should acclimate to the student, or do you believe that it is the job of the student to acclimate to the school?

"Our goal is to empower boys, their parents, and educators to pursue educational opportunities, especially to help close the black male achievement gap."

- Joe Brewster; Co-Producer, Co-Director

If you are interested in attending the showing of American Promise and/or participating in the community discussion please RSVP to Stephanie at stephanieb@burgundyfarm.org.

Welcome to March

Winds of March

Winds of March, we welcome you,

There is work for you to do.

Work and play and blow all day,

Blow the winter cold away.

- Unknown Poet

March has begun, which means that sunshine and warm weather are surely on the horizon. Here are two fun facts about March: 1) Each year, March starts on the same day of the week that November does and ends on the same day of the week that June does, and 2) March is one of the seven months that has 31 days. Share these fun facts with your children, and see if they can think of any others. Then take a moment to review the many cultural events celebrated in March. Here are a few:

  •        National Reading Day: March 3
  •        Mardi Gras: March 4
  •        Ash Wednesday: March 5
  •        International Women's Day: March 8
  •        Pi Day: March 14
  •        Saint Patrick's Day: March 17

This list merely scratches the surface of world holidays and special events housed in the month of March. To learn more about various cultural happenings this month, check out the Inclusivity@Burgundy Haiku page, a hub of information and activity regarding inclusion.

BCWS in the News
We're excited to share that the Burgundy Center for Wildlife Studies Summer Camp was featured in the February 26 Washington Post Express round-up of adventure camps. Click here to see a PDF of the coverage, and contact BCWS Camp Registrar Michele McCabe (michelem@burgundyfarm.org or 703.842.0470) right away if your child is interested in attending one of the sessions. There is already a waitlist for girls in Session 3 of the Senior Program, and the Junior Program only has a few spots for girls available. Parents, there are opportunities for you to enjoy summer at BCWS, too. Ask Michele about Adult Weekend, July 25-27.
