Spoiler alert: I am writing to you this morning between my day-to-day duties as Assistant Head of School and my newly added dance rehearsals. Our entire community has focused efforts this week on bringing Burgundy on Broadway (BOB) to the stage. Our sixth-graders are the stars of the show, their teachers and parents have supported them every step of the way, and the rest of our students enjoyed a preview of the show yesterday. Judging by the packed Loft, I know that many of those students brought their parents back to school for the debut of the full performance last night.

BOB is a fun musical revue and rite of passage, the first of their three Middle School performing arts productions. The 2014 theme is Heroes and Legends, and the class of 2016 took impressive initiative in shaping the characters, costumes, choreography, and more, fearlessly volunteering for solo acts, narratives, dance routines, and behind-the-scenes ventures. Director Cathy Manley and choreographers Adrienne Magnusson and Ryan Sellers helped each student stretch his or her performance limits with plenty of nurturing guidance. As a result, the students we see in one way in the classroom suddenly morph on stage, embracing various, and sometimes unexpected, roles with confidence and excitement.

When I reported to the Loft for my first dance rehearsal on Tuesday, a team of 6th Grade Wonder Women took pride in coaching me through the choreography and showing me the precision of each move. They had so clearly embraced the process of learning, which includes the important role of teaching and supporting one another. It's an honor to share the stage with them in that moment, and I'm so glad that they'll be able to share the experience with so many of their friends and family members.

I know they'll be just as excited to share their hard work with friends and family. The theme has inspired many discussions about their own superheroes, and I've heard many of the students reference their parents as heroes and role models. It's incredible to hear them articulate thoughts of such insight and gratitude, and for me, it also emphasizes how vital our parents are in the "triangular relationship" necessary among parents, teachers and students to facilitate the best learning possible. Hearing the students' words verified that parents' involvement provides a sense of commitment and support, and the kids feel that.

With that in mind, I thank all of our parents. Of course, I thank the parents who coordinated volunteer roles for BOB and rearranged personal schedules to make sure their sixth-graders could attend every afternoon and weekend rehearsal and went above and beyond in so many ways to ensure that BOB could be a positive experience for our students. But this kind of support is not unique to the 6th Grade parents; it is apparent within all of you, and it is part of what makes Burgundy such a great school.

Thank you for your partnership as we nurture lifelong learners and active citizens who are confident and courageous enough to follow their passions and make a difference. I look forward to seeing many of you at 7:30 this evening for the final performance of BOB in the Loft, where we will see a unique representation of the success of our partnership.

Sincerely,

Kari Cafeo
Assistant Head of School
Reminder: Auction Registration
Congratulations to Maria Gilroy, who won the drawing of the $100 VISA gift card for which she was entered by registering early for the auction. If you haven't registered yet, please let us know right away whether or not you'll be able to attend this fabulous fundraiser on Saturday, March 8. Because we need to report a final headcount to the caterers and rental company on Monday, we are asking everyone to take a few moments now to RSVP (yes or no). If you cannot attend the auction, please enter your information and mark "1" on the final drop-down menu next to "I cannot attend the auction." Thank you, and we hope to see you there!
Auction Update: All the Details in Black and White

For anyone who has never attended a Burgundy auction before, it is quite a sight! On Saturday, March 8, you will enter the event through the Middle School Atrium beginning at 5:30 p.m. At the registration tables you will check in alphabetically (alphabetized by student's last name) and collect your seating information and bidder number. You will also be able to purchase a mask at the registration table.

Then, you may think you're entering the Gym, but you will be entering the world of a black and white ball. Keep your bidder number handy. This number is what you'll use to bid on items in the silent and live auctions and to enjoy the various games, raffles and festivities, including:

Artisanal Cocktail Bar: Delight in specialty cocktail drinks ($9) from Suellen and Joe Savukas and Cindy Dyer and Jason Ankele. Look for these fun bartenders and be sure to try the signature drink of the evening. It is fantastic!

Pick a Mask: A new take on the ever-popular Balloon Pops, Pick a Mask is a game through which you can win gift certificates to some of your favorite local restaurants in $25, $50 and $100 values. Look for people holding large bouquets of masks to play (and play early -- these masks go fast!).

Burgundy Raffle and 50/50 Raffle: If you haven't had a chance to purchase raffle tickets, or you want to increase your chances of winning one of these great prizes, look for the raffle ticket table immediately upon entering the forest. Burgundy Raffle tickets are three for $25 or ten for $75, and 50/50 Raffle tickets are $50.

Bucket Raffle: Burgundy's newest raffle. Here's how it works:  Purchase a $10 two-part ticket. Place one part of the ticket in a bucket in front of the prize of your choice and keep the other half of the ticket, which you will need for the drawing. Just before the Live Auction begins, we'll draw a ticket from each bucket and announce the winning numbers.  If you really want one of these items for yourself or someone else, purchase multiple tickets! Increase your odds of winning while also supporting financial aid. The three great prizes were donated by parents Missy and Chad Murrell. The bucket raffle table will be next to the raffle ticket table.

We're looking to a fun and festive night, and we're excited to celebrate with you. See you there!
