It was a brief school week, indeed! Two snow days and a delayed start on a third, following an eventful holiday weekend. Monday marked a great 'Day-On' for many of our Middle School families, who participated in our Martin Luther King Day of Service. I was fortunate enough to catch up with each group of volunteers, however briefly, Monday morning, and whether our students were packing up donated bicycles to send to Third World countries or designing a new playground for a local housing community serving the transitioning homeless or transporting and stacking food for the local hungry, they were focused on the task at hand and happy to be helping!
On Saturday, nearly 200 people, including six former Board presidents and many teachers and parents from more than five decades of Burgundy's history, came to campus to honor the memory of former teacher Anna McKenna. The memorial began at 3:00 p.m. and many stayed until 6:00 p.m. It was a great celebration of Anna's life, Burgundy's community, and the ways our teachers (now and always) connect with students and inspire them for a lifetime.
Sunday, just to fill the lull, we had a major water main break, and after meeting Jerry Vaughan, Fairfax Water representatives, and our local Franconia plumbers on campus to address the situation, Tatum and I, thanks to caretaker Molly Buck, were able to visit with the animals at the barn, feed the chickens, and enjoy some bonding time (little did I know how much additional bonding time we were soon to have...).
Thus, the snow days, while filled with regular work, were a departure from normal routines and were fun!
I hope that many of you found a beneficial and unanticipated something special in our two extra days, even in addition to memorable time with family. Not being on the regular schedule sometimes allows us to catch up with ourselves, whether by drifting back to sleep for an hour, braving the weather for a brisk walk, sitting up late reading or journaling, or just working at a more leisurely pace from home, watching the snow falling and keeping an eye or an ear on our kids.
Three years ago, after the blizzard hit, I cross-country skied each day for 3 or 4 days straight, the first two days right out of my garage and into the white. I've hankered for that experience each year since. This Wednesday morning, I found myself on cross-country skis and facing into a frigid breeze. I was instantly second-guessing my decision, but I was awake as I'd been in at least a couple of years. A few minutes later, my native Minnesotan neighbor Steve and I were into the woods on the crispest of early mornings, watching the white caps roll across Burke Lake and feeling the sun peeking through the trees as we averted the occasional bare spot or branch. For two hours or so, as we navigated each curve of the lake's shores, sometimes finding our way back onto a path or making a calculated decision to explore a route through the woods, we saw only two persons and a loud blue heron, and said few words. Though we each realized we were late getting back to work, we were relaxed and happy, having reconnected with each other and something we needed.
Snow days can be Nature's way of reminding us to slow down and appreciate things -- family, most important, and perhaps our warm homes and fireplaces, but also Nature itself, seemingly disrupting everything but often reminding us of what's important and necessary. I hope you each found such a moment over these past few days.
Sincerely,
Jeff Sindler Head of School |

Burgundy on Broadway: Heroes and Legends Save the Date for February 20 and 21
On Thursday, February 20, and Friday, February 21, at 7:30 p.m. in the Loft, Burgundy's sixth-graders will perform Burgundy on Broadway: Heroes and Legends, a musical revue with a repertoire that spans from 1960's Camelot and 2005's Spamalot to 1984's Footloose and 1997's Hercules. Also listen for a fun rap and a rendition of Mariah Carey's "Hero." Burgundy on Broadway is an annual tradition for the school and an exciting rite of passage for sixth-graders. Musical Director Cathy Manley chooses the theme and songs each year. This class of students quickly volunteered ideas for characters, costumes, choreography, and more, and they are fearlessly taking on solo acts, instrumental performances, narratives, dance routines, and behind-the-scenes ventures.
"These students have grown and developed with our instrumental program, so they've already had a lot of experience performing together," said Cathy. "That comfort level -- with music and with one another -- has facilitated some great collaboration as they jump into their first major stage performance and explore this theme together as a class."
The theme 'heroes and legends' ties directly into the students' studies of Greek mythology at the beginning of the year, and they continue to discuss and clarify their own definitions of what it means to be a hero.
"It's interesting to see how strongly the students are relating to the theme," said Manley. "Even the lyrics -- the very building blocks of the production -- provide a great starting point in defining what's heroic. There are so many positive role models, male and female, and it's inspiring to see the students really consider the kinds of people they want to grow into. It's even more inspiring to watch them them bring those concepts to the stage."

Martin Luther King Day of Service: Thank You!
Thanks to all of the students, teachers, staff and parents who honored Dr. King through service on Monday (and last week!). On Monday, the official Martin Luther King Day of Service, the Burgundy community prepared and served lunches and soup for 75 people at Meade Memorial Church; collected, sorted and stored an enormous amount of food for ALIVE; dismantled and loaded bikes for Bikes for the World; created literacy games for the volunteer tutors who work with elementary school students in Alexandria; canvassed residents of Alexandria's West End to promote emergency preparedness; and began design work on a playground for residents of Community Lodging's Affordable Housing units. We were incredibly lucky to get such a beautiful, warm day, before the snow and cold. Check out some pictures of the day's activities in "Parting Pictures," below.

Auction Update: Balloon Pops and Sign Up Parties
Many thanks to everyone who has already offered their generous support for this year's auction by soliciting and/or donating an item. Looking for an idea of what to donate? Consider donating a restaurant gift certificate in $25, $50 or $100 denominations. At the auction, they will be sold as a fun "balloon pop," (renamed this year as "Pick a Mask or Feather"). Regardless of the name, the game allows auction attendees to purchase a gift certificate from a surprise restaurant. Always popular among auction goers, the sale is a win/win for financial aid since each certificate sells at 100% of its face value. Click here to see what was donated last year and new ideas for restaurants in nearby locations.
Keep in mind that donations aren't always tangible items, either. At Burgundy, we love experiences! After the success of last year's Sign Up Parties, we again hope to offer a variety of events or parties catering to various interests and age groups. Some of the exciting Sign Up Parties we offered in 2013 included an "Ice Cream Making Party" for up to 20 children ages 6 through 12, and a "1920s Jazz Party" for up to 30 adults. Click here to see other ideas. Be creative! Think about coordinating something with friends. Pick a date, location, number of people possible, and a budget. We can work together to come up with the ideal price per person for attendees.
Want to brainstorm or run an idea by us? Please contact 2014 Auction Co-Chairs Amanda Traub (alawasik@aol.com) or Jacqueline Norris (nelsonnorris@yahoo.com).

It May Be Cold Outside...It may be cold outside, but don't let that freeze our Annual Giving efforts! Our goal is to raise $250,000 in support of financial aid, classroom budgets, professional development and curriculum development, and we're just heating up! Each gift, regardless of the size, creates a snowball effect that helps us meet our goals and sustain some of the most critical pieces of Burgundy culture. Much like it takes many flakes of snow to coat our campus in a blanket of white, it takes many gifts to ensure we can continue nurturing our students. We hope everyone will contribute to Annual Giving in support of our efforts. To date, the 4/5 Coopers are in the lead with 67% participation. Will another class skate right past them to 100% participation? Click here to make a gift or pledge now via our secure website. Many thanks to those of you who spread some warmth by making your gift during the snow days. |
