Greetings!
Welcome back and Happy New Year!
I hope everyone enjoyed the Winter Break. Many thanks to those of you who, in the spirit of the season, thought of Burgundy during your break and contributed to Annual Giving. Your generosity brought us closer to our $250,000 goal.
As we returned to campus this week, energy was high among students and faculty, and even the frigid weather couldn't put a freeze on all the activity and excitement.
The 2/3 Buckeyes showcased research they had done on endangered animals, sixth-graders began preparing in earnest for Burgundy on Broadway, and all of our basketball teams began practices, just to name a few of the highlights. Next week, 4/5 students will culminate their studies of China with the China Expo, and before you know it, the adult community will gather in the Gym for the Burgundy Auction (a special thanks to Jacqueline Norris and Amanda Traub for co-chairing the 2014 event).
We have moved into an exciting new year, and if this week is any indication, 2014 will be fun and productive for all of us.
Sincerely,
Jeff Sindler Head of School |

Martin Luther King Day of Service Activities
At Burgundy, we encourage our community to spend the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday as "a day on -- not a day off." For that reason, we are pleased to announce, in partnership with Volunteer Alexandria and more than 10 local non-profit agencies, our 5th annual Martin Luther King (MLK) Day of Service on January 20, 2014, as well as a week of service leading up to the event. As we honor Dr. King's legacy through service, we provide children ages 4 to 14 and their families the opportunity to engage in service projects that will benefit their neighbors here in Alexandria.
On Wednesday, January 15, from 8:45 to 9:30 a.m. in the Gym, students, teachers, staff and administrators will gather in the Gym for an assembly to honor Dr. King's ideals and legacy. Parents are welcome to join us for this assembly.
Next week, Lower School students will participate in the following projects and activities during their classes:
- Junior Kindergarten: Making fleece blankets for Alexandria shelter residents
- Kindergarten Penguins: Making playdough for Children's National Medical Center
- Kindergarten Polar Bears: Making trail mix for Meade Memorial Episcopal Church to help feed the homeless
- 1st Grade Goats: Making "Adopt Me" bandanas and catnip toys for the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (Vola Lawson Animal Shelter)
- 1st Grade Sheep: Learning about campus operations and brainstorming ways to support their immediate community members
- 2/3 Buckeyes: Making Valentine's Day cards for members of the Armed Forces
- 2/3 Viceroys: Making care packages for deployed soldiers
- 4/5 Coopers: "Goats for the Old Goat" and visiting the Charles Houston Senior Center
- 4/5 Redtails: Making Valentine's Day cards for members of the Armed Forces
On Monday, January 20, Middle School students will participate in service projects throughout the community, such as:
- Preparing lunches for Meade Memorial Episcopal Church
- Dismantling and loading bicycles into shipping containers for Bikes for the World
- Sorting food from the all-campus food drive (see below) for ALIVE!
- Beginning design work for a long-term playground project with Community Lodgings
- Creating literacy games for young children for Wright to Read
- Distributing emergency preparedness information and materials to low-income residents in Alexandria
We'll share more information about the ways our students are positively impacting Alexandria in honor of Dr. King in the coming weeks.

Annual Giving Continues
Thank you to everyone who has already supported Annual Giving. We have received generous gifts from parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, special friends, and even students! We closed the 2013 calendar year strong, but we still have some work to do. We had hoped to reach our monetary goals of $250,000 and 100% participation by December 31, but we have not. Because our community is so dependent upon the success of Annual Giving, we need to continue our efforts.
As you consider at what level you are able to support Annual Giving, please keep in mind that all of us, children and adults alike, are part of the Burgundy community. It is essential that we each support our own community to the best of our ability. Your tax-deductible Annual Giving contributions support some of the most critical components of the Burgundy culture, such as financial aid, classroom budgets, professional development, curriculum development, and operation of the pool. If you have not yet made your family's gift or pledge, we ask that you do so today via our secure website; remember you can pledge now and fulfill the pledge by June.
In making a gift you are supporting some of the people closest to you and your children, and you are helping to ensure that Burgundy may continue to provide an outstanding educational experience.
Thank you!

Annual Auction: Save the Date
What's "Black and White and Burgundy?" Burgundy's 32nd Annual Auction, our school's primary fundraiser for financial aid, which this year will be on Saturday, March 8, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Gym. One in five students at Burgundy receives financial aid, and the auction is one of the most fun, most important ways to support our community and maintain the diversity that benefits every member of our Burgundy family. You will continue to get updates about the Auction in the coming weeks, and we welcome questions at any time. We look forward to celebrating the event with you on Saturday, March 8.

Burgundy in the News
We are excited to share that the Mt. Vernon Gazette and Alexandria Gazette each feature artwork from several Burgundy students in their December 26 "Children's Issue." As well, the December issue of Wow!Ed, the newsletter from the Center for Educational Improvement, featured quotes from Assistant Head of School Kari Cafeo and 1st Grade teacher Ann Douglas to showcase the value of school-family partnerships. January: The Start of a New Year
Traditionally, in many places around the world, at the top of each year people make resolutions. They promise to become healthier or give more to charity, for instance, often becoming more altruistic with each commitment. Historically, January has been the month of new beginnings. We hope this year brings you fulfillment, renewed hope and a fresh new beginning to the next phase in your life. Good luck with your 2014 goals.
While you are sprinting toward a wonderful new year, take a moment to review the many cultural events celebrated in January. Here are a few:

- New Year's Day - January 1
- National Human Trafficking Awareness Day in the United States - January 11
- Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in the United States - Third Monday
- Australia Day in Australia - January 26
This list merely scratches the surface of world holidays and special events housed in the month of January. To learn more about various cultural happenings this month, check out the Inclusivity@Burgundy Haiku page, a hub of information and activity regarding inclusion.
