Wednesday morning the entire school packed into the Loft and enjoyed a memorable and entertaining preview of our 7th Grade production of The Princess Bride. The story, for those unfamiliar, is a comedy about true love, a story-within-a-story, involving romance, adventure, and fantasy -- with lots of laughs!
There are some special creative touches from our seventh-graders in this production. For one, we are using student Foley artists to create "real" sound effects, such as trotting horses and screams. In addition, actors are actually using their bodies to portray objects like a boat or machine.
The students have been preparing for weeks, learning a lot about hard work and collaboration in the process, to bring this beloved story to life on Burgundy's stage. This past week, Tech Week, they've devoted themselves to all-day rehearsals, an experience that requires mature focus and constant output of energy and intelligence. These rehearsals engage the entire instrument -- voice, body and mind -- requiring the students to think "outside the box" and to consider how to work with and in support of 30 other people.
As drama teacher Deborah Clark Ives says, "Theatre is very much like a team sport, but no one rides the bench." Each student plays an integral role in bringing this story to life, and each student has risen to an incredible challenge. Even more notable, they have done it as a cohesive group.
As usual, this year's 7th Grade play reminds us how much our students learn and grow in engaging in such a professionally managed theatrical production. Students offer surprising and inspiring performances, and we see different children shine in ways we may not have anticipated. It is very exciting.
As Head of School and as a parent I have seen the lasting value of the experience of the performing (and visual) arts at Burgundy. Very special thanks to Deborah, Roberta Masters-Cullen and Emily Jonas '03 for nurturing these students to realize their potential and to enjoy every moment of this demanding process.
Sincerely,
Jeff Sindler Head of School |

Student Spotlight: The Princess Bride
Hannah Miller '15
Roles: Assistant Brute, Rodent of Unusual Size (R.O.U.S.) and Foley Artist
Q. What has been the most fun piece of preparing for this production?
A. I'm in charge of the Foley artists, and it's really fun to play around with the sound effects. We have drums and maracas, for instance, to make different sound effects that aren't digital. It's been really cool.
Q. What is the most interesting aspect of the story?
A. I think the torture machine scene is really funny, kinda gruesome, too, but really funny. In this play, the people get to be the things, like the torture machine. So we build this machine out of people on the stage, and they get to make the movements of the machine; so it almost looks like the people are doing the torturing.
Q. Why should friends and family come see The Princess Bride?
A. I think it's an interesting story for adults because it's funny and humorous, and for kids, there's a lot of fighting and sports and action. There's something for everyone, and I think everybody will like it.

Kindergarten Students Perform at Braddock Glen Assisted Living Center
On Wednesday, November 20, the Kindergarten Penguins and Polar Bears traveled to Braddock Glen Assisted Living Center. Teachers Barbie, Carrie, Mandy and Tracy devised a fun-filled agenda that helped demonstrate to the students not only that they are part of a larger community, but also how they have the ability to make their community a better place by sharing their time, talents and kindness.
The students, dressed head to toe as colors of the rainbow, confidently performed eight songs about colors. They then introduced themselves to the crowd and shared their favorite colors. Next, they invited "all the grandmas," including Mandy's grandmother, to share their favorite colors. The students were excited to find out how much they had in common with the residents at Braddock Glen, and before they left, they made sure to shake hands with each of the residents and thank them for the visit.
"Most of the grandmas liked pink," said Alejandra Ferrer when asked about the most surprising part of the field trip.
When asked about his favorite part of the field trip, Jonah Dixon said, "I liked singing for the grandmas because they give me a smile, and it makes my heart feel good."
Ethan Edwards said his favorite part was "seeing Mandy's grandma and the other grandmas," while Noah Spicer said that he "liked singing the songs for Mandy's grandma."
Rose Breckenridge said, "I liked when you got to shake hands with the grandmas and when you got to say your name."
In response to the question, "What is something you learned today?" Journey Wooden summed it up nicely, saying, "I learned about being kind."

Student Spotlight
Sarah King in Disney's High School Musical
Sarah King '19 is performing in Mount Vernon Community Children's Theatre's production of Disney's High School Musical this weekend. The play features students of East High, who must deal with issues of love, friends, and family while balancing their classes and extra curricular activities. Troy, the resident jock, and brainy Gabriella cause an upheaval when they decide to audition for the high school musical. Although many students resent the threat posed to the "status quo," Troy and Gabriella's alliance might just open the door for others to shine as well. Burgundy's Technology Support and Integration Specialist Austin Fodrie is the production's stage manager. Click here for more information.
Annette Hasnas in A Midsummer Night's Dream
Annette Hasnas '15 is performing in Synetic Theater's Teen Company production of A Midsummer Night's Dream this December. The Teen Company follows in the footsteps of Synetic's mainstage with a silent retelling of the fantastical, darkly playful story of love, mistaken identity and the supernatural! In a magical forest, four lost lovers and a group of amateur actors stumble into the middle of a fight between the King and Queen of the fairies and find themselves being manipulated by a mischievous changeling child. The original mainstage production was nominated for nine Helen Hayes awards in 2010. Click here for more information.
