Giving a parent tour of Burgundy at our Open House events is an excellent opportunity to people watch. The sheer variety of families that walk through our door is enormous. We have families seeking a competitive spot for so many different reasons, but all of them are ultimately focused on what is in the best interest of their child. The questions from the parents come in two big buckets: the expected and the unexpected. Sample of expected: What is your student-to-teacher ratio? What are your testing procedures? Where do Burgundy graduates go to high school? Where do they go to college?

Keeping me on my toes are the unexpected, such as: Why are the children walking to class by themselves? If there aren't any bells, how do the kids know to go to their next class? I manage to answer these questions seriously but with a sense of humor: We foster and encourage independence, so the children know the campus intimately. The kids know their schedules, and the teachers trust them to get to their next class. But of course, during these tours I try very hard to tune into the visiting children: What do they think? What are their initial impressions? Do they think they would fit in?

This past Monday I had one small rising third-grader who was shy and quiet. We did a full 1.5 hour tour tramping all over our beautiful campus. Her parents were clearly impressed and intrigued with Burgundy...at the end of the tour when she was snagging an apple from the snack table and her parents were cornering the faculty, I asked her what her favorite part of Burgundy was. She absolutely lit up and said, "the Barn."

I share this story because the Barn is more than a home for our animals -- it represents our beginnings as a cooperative and progressive school. The Barn is central to our core philosophy of a school focused on raising children connected to the Earth and each other, and it reminds us always of our unofficial mantra and motto of "No Child Left Inside." I believe every child should be offered an education that centers on the whole child. And we can only offer our wonderful campus, teachers and curriculum with your support of Annual Giving.

Annual Giving is a critical component of our financial operations, and we need everyone to give - participation at whatever level is right for you is what we are seeking.  So let's show those hopeful incoming families how much we care about our school by showing our commitment to Burgundy: let's get that Barn Raising Party going!

Sincerely,

Seileen Mullen
Annual Giving Chairperson

The Princess Bride: November 21 & 22

On Thursday, November 21 and Friday, November 22, at 7:30 p.m. in the Loft, Burgundy's seventh-graders will perform The Princess Bride, combining physical comedy with elements of fantasy, adventure and romance. Audience members will enjoy exploring timeless themes, like true love, with an enthusiastic cast and lots of physical acting. Tickets are $5 for adults and $1 for children and can be purchased at the door on the night of the performance.

Parents of African American Students (PAAS) Meeting: November 24

You're invited to attend a Parents of African American Students (PAAS) meeting on Sunday, November 24, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in the Middle School Atrium. During this first meeting, attendees will decide on PAAS leadership and develop agenda items for the future. In the spirit of community, this meeting will be a potluck. Please RSVP to Stephanie Borges, Director for an Inclusive Community, at stephanieb@burgundyfarm.org, and please let her know what dish you'd like to bring when you RSVP. Burgundy will provide drinks and paper goods.

Board of Trustees: Call for Nominations
The Board of Trustees is a dynamic volunteer group of Burgundy parents, alumni and supporters that is charged with ensuring the long-term stability and financial viability of Burgundy. Each year the Burgundy community has the opportunity to elect several new members to the Board while ensuring an important degree of year-to-year continuity among existing Trustees. If you are interested in or have questions about service as a Trustee, or if you know of someone who might be interested, please contact Dave Wales, Chair of the Committee on Trustees (dpwales@jonesday.com or 202.531.1112).

Bikes for the World: Tomorrow
Burgundy students will gather on campus tomorrow, November 16, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Middle School parking lot to collect, repair and donate used bicycles. Last year, students and parents broke down 41 bicycles and donated them to high school students in a small town in the Philippines. While the elementary school in that town is within walking distance from the children's homes, high school students must travel six miles to and from school. Thanks to Burgundy's collection, these high school students now have a reliable way to get to school each day and are less likely to drop out.

If you have any bicycles you would like to donate but you are unable to drop them off at tomorrow's Bikes for the World collection, please contact Doug Fishman (dougf@burgundyfarm.org) and Charlene Pritzker (charlenep@burgundyfarm.org) immediately. They will do what they can to accommodate your needs. Bicycles do not need to be in perfect condition.
Student Spotlight: The Princess Bride
Logan Murphy-Redd '15
Role: Count Rugen

Q. What has been the most fun piece of preparing for this production?

A. Probably figuring out my costume because I have a six-fingered glove on my right hand. I think Deborah sewed the extra finger on, and it worked! It's also been fun working with the machine, making it function, and getting the lines down (and listening to Aubrey [Ankele] scream).

Q. What is the most interesting aspect of the story?

A. How Westley comes back to life and how Inigo Montoya finds Count Rugen after all those years. It's not normal, it's kind of like a fairy tale.

Q. Why should friends and family come see The Princess Bride?

Because it's a really good show. Everyone is doing a really good job, and it's coming together really well. And a lot of people know the story, and they should come see our version of it.

Student Spotlight: Thomas Jefferson Intermediate Math Open

Seven Burgundy students (Russell Broman '14, Kevin Cafeo '15, Thomas Heist '15, Hannah Miller '15, Thea Mills '14, Antioch Sanders '14 and Nick Sansone '15) attended the Thomas Jefferson (TJ) Intermediate Math Open, held this year on November 9 at Glasgow Middle School while TJ is under renovation.

The annual event is an opportunity for math students to learn a variety of new skills and problem-solving strategies, meet other students from around the area, and take part in a friendly mathematics competition as part of a team of students. Competition categories included team, power, guts, and orienteering.  Following an individual round, Burgundy students were divided among seven different teams (among a total of 30 teams), and competed in "power," "guts" and "orienteering" rounds. Hannah Miller's team (pictured) earned third place among the 30 teams, and Nick Sansone received a red ribbon in the individual rounds for students in pre-algebra.

Congrats to all of our participating math students!

Sports Spotlight

The Burgundy Blazers Varsity Soccer team extended their winning streak to two seasons! The Blazers moved to the finals after a decisive 7:1 semifinal win over Edlin School on Monday, and they crowned the 2013 undefeated season with a 4:2 championship win over Capital Hill Day School (CHDS) on Wednesday. On a cold November afternoon, at Bishop Ireton High School's turf field, the Blazers took an early 2:0 lead, but CHDS fought back to tie the game at 2:2 early in the second half. Late in the game, a shuffle in front of the goal scored another point for Burgundy, and the Blazers quickly added their fourth goal from a lob kick, taking advantage of the CHDS goalie being too far ahead as he tried to support his team's offense.

The Burgundy team played offensive soccer throughout the season, backed up by a powerful defense. During the regular and playoff season, our kids scored 41 goals, conceding only 14. Most importantly, these talented and determined athletes formed a great TEAM. The 2013 Blazers team was comprised of 12 eighth-graders (Abbas Ali, Russell Broman, Tomas Camacho, Robbie Carter, Beata Corcoran, Peter Devlin, Jonah Horowitz, Mason Mailloux, Lily Morton, Antioch Sanders, Ethan Steinberg and Spencer Wigodsky), six seventh-graders (Hammatt Babin, Hannah Miller, Alex Moore, Logan Murphy-Redd, Nick Sansone and Weston Smith), and four sixth-graders (Riley Casagrande, Clara Corcoran, Sofie Drexler and Eliza Marcus). Congratulations to all players, and thanks to parents and Burgundy fans!

Open House Thank You

Many thanks to all of the teachers, parents and students who helped make this past week's Veterans Day Open House a great success. As many of you know, our Open House events are the best way to showcase our campus and curriculum to prospective families and drive the admission process. It takes support from our entire community to make them happen.

Something that's not immediately apparent is how our Veterans Day Open House also provide a growth and learning opportunity for our entire 8th Grade class. Some of these students assist with campus tours while others provide childcare for our visiting families. This tradition of using our eighth-graders, Burgundy's student leaders, at our November Open House is one for which I am sincerely grateful. This event could not happen without their assistance. Their participation also reflects Burgundy's mission to educate the whole child. The experience hones their communication skills -- their ability to think on their feet and to articulate their opinions. It is also a demonstration of their compassion and their service to others and to their school. All of these skills and qualities represent the outcomes that Burgundy seeks to instill in each and every student. These skills will continue to serve these students well, and well beyond high school and college -- indeed for life.
