Greetings!

Saturday's Fall Fair was a great success, thanks to the hundreds of parents, students, faculty and staff who volunteered their time and talents to make this community event a fun experience for all. This annual event, which attracts hundreds of visitors, showcases our incredible campus and community. It takes many hands to help it all come together, but the Fair is a great expression of what makes Burgundy special and even unique.

This year, we had 265 parents and students, representing 165 families (75 percent of all Burgundy families) working on the day of the Fair. Together, they filled 341 volunteer slots. In addition, 41 faculty, staff and administrators volunteered their time. It would be impossible for me to thank each of them by name in this column, but I'd like to give special recognition to a few.

First, our Special Events Coordinator Allison Niedbala works tirelessly to orchestrate the many details involved, and she is supported by this year's Fall Fair Chair Tara Carter and Fall Fair Co-Chair Jenn Bohnen (who will be our 2014 Fall Fair Chair). We also had event chairs, who organized and implemented specific events:

  • Artisan Mart - Kelley Sullivan
  • Bake Sale - Audrey Dreibelbis
  • Barnyard Visits - Molly Buck
  • Burgundy Mart - Azeb Idris and Ashenafi Belay
  • Entertainment - Paul Miller and Cathy Manley
  • Face Painting - Jill Reuter
  • Food Tent - Nancy and Neil Weissman
  • Funnel Cakes - Minh Vu
  • Games - Tracy Camp-Johnston, Beth King, and Tricia Maher-Miller
  • Haunted House - John Arnold, Greg Herbold and Alexa Stott
  • Kid's Closet - Jackie Norris, Danielle Robinson and Sarah Zapolsky
  • Lemonade Stand - Mary Sexton
  • Moon Bounce - Jenn Bohnen
  • Pumpkin Painting - Ela Vincar and Stephanie Borges
  • Scarecrow Making - Rebecca Munroe
  • Used Book Sale - Laura Dworken, Jane Hanson and Patty Spicer
  • Volunteer Coordinator - Amy Heist

The following parents acted as Fall Fair Coordinators, recruiting parent volunteers needed from each class:

  • Junior Kindergarten: Michelle Collier
  • Kindergarten: Tara Carter and Heidi Parsont
  • 1st Grade: Leslie Platt and Ann Ridenhour
  • 2/3 Classes: Amy Heist and Valerie Sanders
  • 4/5 Classes: Laura Dworken and Valerie Sanders
  • 6th Grade: Jan Inguagiato
  • 7th Grade: Amy Heist
  • 8th Grade: Valerie Sanders

Beyond volunteering, the following members of our community secured support from their businesses, helping us to raise even more money for financial aid:

  • Dave Evans, alumni parent and owner of La Prima Catering, who brought his signature chili to the Food Tent for the 23rd year
  • Parent Tara Lloyd, who again secured advertisements for the Fair in four of the Connection Newspapers
  • Parent Stephanie Babin, who donated cupcakes from Buzz Bakery to the Bake Sale

Also deserving of very special thanks are the members of our Maintenance Team, Jerry Vaughan, Russell Boone, Gene Douglas, and Nguyen Nguyen; our Advancement Team, Erin Futrowsky, Michele McCabe, and Jen Pusatere; and our Business Team, Mary Mehala, Kim Britton, and Jamie Dorrier. These teams put in many hours in the weeks leading up to and following the event, working in tandem to attend to some of the most important and behind-the-scenes details.

I am leaving out literally hundreds of names of people to whom I am incredibly grateful for their support. To everyone who was involved in the Fall Fair, please know that I appreciate your help and dedication, not least, Rebecca Munroe, who helped a hapless dad (me) stuff a scarecrow for a distracted three-year-old! You, all who volunteered, embody the spirit of Burgundy, and I hope you enjoyed the day as much as I did!

Sincerely,

Jeff_Signature

Applications for New Students of Current Families Due November 15

Current families and/or faculty and staff members who would like to apply for admission for the 2014-2015 school year for any of their children who are not currently enrolled at Burgundy are encouraged to do so by November 15. Visits for these students will be scheduled in early December. Our online application may be accessed here or on our website under "Admission" in the "Applying to Burgundy" section.  Please feel free to contact Lori Adams (loria@burgundyfarm.org or 703.842.0464) if you have any questions or need assistance with the online application.

Bikes for the World: November 16

In a creative celebration of America Recycles Day, Burgundy will partner with Bikes for the World on Saturday, November 16, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to collect, repair and donate bicycles to community development programs in more than 12 countries. Please save or collect any bikes you are no longer using and bring them to the Middle School parking lot on Saturday, November 16. Bikes do not have to be in perfect condition. Contact Doug Fishman (dougf@burgundyfarm.org) with any questions.

Fall Fair: Thank You!
In addition to the volunteers Jeff thanked (above), we'd also like to extend a special thanks to the people at:
  • Interstate Van Lines, who donated the trailer for our Kid's Closet collection
  • Sunset Hills Baptist Church, who provided overflow parking
  • Giant Food Store at 3131 Duke Street and Krispy Kreme Doughnuts at 6632 Richmond Highway, who donated items to the Bake Sale

And, last but not least, we'd like to thank all of our alumni (pictured) who came back to reconnect with friends and faculty. It was great to catch up with so many Burgundy graduates!
Fall Fair: Merchandise for Sale

If you were hoping to purchase Burgundy gear on Saturday and weren't able to stop by Burgundy Mart, there's still time to shop! Please stop by the Advancement Office to purchase long-sleeve burgundy t-shirts for $12 or short-sleeve tie-dye t-shirts for $15, in addition to other Burgundy imprinted items.

Extended Day During Parent-Teacher Conferences
On Thursday, October 31, and Friday, November 1, there will be no school due to Parent-Teacher Conferences, but Extended Day (Ex Day) will be open. Ex Day will operate from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on both of these days. If you signed up for the Holiday Plan these days are covered in your existing registration. Anyone else is welcome to use Ex Day during this time for a fee of $80 per day/per student. Any students that attend on these days will need to bring their own lunch, but Ex Day will handle all snacks.

Just need childcare for your student(s) during your conference? No problem! Check children in at Ex Day before your conference, and we will be happy to look after them  for no charge until your conference ends. Parents of students who are left at Ex Day for more than one hour (or longer than the anticipated conference time for parents schedule back-to-back conferences for multiple children) will be charged the $80 per child fee.

If you plan to use the full day service please contact Hugh Squire (hughs@burgundyfarm.org) to register. You will be required to bring your payment with you on the day(s) that you attend. If you plan on just using this service during your Parent-Teacher Conference, emailing Hugh Squire is preferred but not required. Please contact Hugh with any questions or concerns. Thank you!
Students Support Burgundy Through Box Top Collection

Members of Burgundy's Advancement Team have visited almost every classroom to let students know that our school participates in the Box Tops for Education program, through which Burgundy earns $0.10 for every Box Top collected. Students who are interested in supporting Burgundy are encouraged to find Box Tops on various products (cereals, frozen foods, soups, storage bags and more) that they already have in their homes. They can cut the Box Tops out (with parent help!) and bring them to their teachers or the Main Office. We collect Box Tops throughout the year, and though they don't have to be organized in any particular way, we shared some fun collection worksheets with the students to help. Click here to print one out.
