Greetings!
I hope you are having a great summer! Even if the sun has not been shining too consistently, Burgundy Summer Day Camp campers have been all smiles, and we hear good reports also from the Burgundy Center for Wildlife Studies camp in West Virginia, where they have had their own mixed weather! Both camps also facilitated visits from reaccreditation teams this week, and thus far, the feedback has been strong and positive.
In Alexandria, we've had some great work sessions with teachers, administrators and staff to prepare for the coming school year. We are all tackling our "summer lists" while still enjoying some of the flexibility of a summer schedule.
I hope the same is true for you, and I look forward to sharing more news in early August.
Sincerely,
Jeff Sindler Head of School |

Staffing Announcement
Please join us in welcoming to the Burgundy community three new faculty and staff members:
2/3 Viceroys Teacher: Alyssa Roark
After graduating from Hampshire College with a self-designed major in Education and Social Justice, Alyssa worked as a 3rd and 4th Grade teacher at M.B. Hubbard Elementary School through Teach for America. Most recently, Alyssa was a 4th Grade reading teacher at Achievement Preparatory Academy, and she has also taught Language Arts and literacy to Middle School students and adults. In all of her positions, Alyssa has demonstrated the ability to modify her approach for diverse learners. During Alyssa's visits to Burgundy, we were impressed by her ability to naturally integrate her sample lessons with the students' Chesapeake Bay unit, also incorporating Burgundy's campus. She has a deep understanding of and appreciation for progressive education, and we look forward to having her in the Viceroys classroom this fall.
Lower and Middle School Spanish Teacher: Maria Espinoza
We are happy to announce that Maria Espinoza will return to Burgundy this fall as Lower and Middle School Spanish teacher. Maria stepped in as an interim Spanish teacher this February, and she has demonstrated a real appreciation for progressive education and a genuine love of children. Maria is originally from Peru and has 10 years of experience teaching Spanish to all age groups, from elementary school to college students. She has a bachelor's degree in Business Administration and a master's degree in Spanish Literature from Florida International University.
Director of Auxiliary Services: Hugh Squire
We are excited to welcome Hugh Squire as Burgundy's first Director of Auxiliary Services, a position we have created to oversee and support our Extended Day and Summer Day Camp programs. Hugh begins his work at Burgundy this week and brings 13 years of experience in childhood education and program administration, as well as a passion for outdoor education. Most recently, Hugh was the Director of Auxiliary Programs at Beauvoir, where he led their summer programs and after school and enrichment programs. Prior to that, he worked for seven years at Discovery Creek Children's Museum, developing curriculum and managing education programs for schools and families. Hugh earned a bachelor's degree in Applied Animal Science, which entails agricultural science, agricultural business and biology, from the University of Delaware.
