Greetings!

As another school year races to conclusion, many classes are hosting culminating and "moving up" type activities, with parents - and even some grandparents - attending the events and celebrating the hard work that our students and teachers accomplished throughout the year. From our Junior Kindergarten Chicks and their class ceremonies in the amphitheater yesterday to this morning's All School Meeting (minus the eighth-graders, who were scheduled for a class trip to King's Dominion), where we installed the 7th Grade Class of 2014 as our newest "seniors," it is a celebratory time. And, of course, the biggest celebration of all was last night's graduation for the eighth-graders.

Our 8th Grade graduation highlights the students. Eighth grade students, with faculty support, design the event and do most of the speaking and performing. Last night, as in each year, the students at graduation showed great poise, promise and a sense of gratitude as they thanked their parents, their teachers, their classmates and their school. I have enjoyed watching these students grow up over the past seven years, and never more than this spring.

One highlight was my visit to Wilderness Adventure, a culminating Burgundy experience at a lovely and picturesque lodge in the hills of southwestern Virginia. The Wilderness Adventure trip is a four-day final bonding experience and sequence of outdoor activities, from caving (spelunking) to canoeing to zip-lining to rock climbing. A mental, emotional and physical challenge for everyone exists among the activities. The first day I was there, my group, which included parent-teacher Carrie Ustun, had a whitewater kayak lesson. The lesson actually took place at the pond, which allows new kayakers to gain the fundamentals of safely getting situated in, balancing, and paddling a whitewater kayak (very tipsy), and to learn how to roll and escape their kayaks, exiting underwater, which can be scary and difficult. (For the record, I left with a lot of water up my nose.) Everyone in our group managed to accept and master the challenge, helping one another throughout and offering encouraging words of advice (some of which I referenced at last night's ceremonies).

By the time we got everyone reassembled at dinner that evening, all of the students were in good spirits, some sun-burned, some still scratching off the mud from the cave, and many celebrating that they had accepted a challenge they would not have had they not had the strong support of their classmates and teachers, along with a few parents. And it was clear that the students, in accepting these challenges so readily, really are ready for whatever is coming next: the Burgundy Class of 2013 will be go-getters and courageous explorers and defenders of their beliefs, like the Burgundy alumni before them. They won't let fear -- or a little water up their noses -- deter them! And, as many of them alluded in their remarks last night, they will continue to grow and accept new challenges together, despite embarking on diverse journeys.

Congratulations and best of luck to the Class of 2013. As several of you stated last night, Burgundy is a home, your home, and you are part of a Burgundy family. We love you and are proud of you! We hope you come back to visit often!

Sincerely,
Jeff_Signature

Sixth Grade Advisory Day

This year's 6th Grade Advisory Day was on Friday, May 31. Advisory Day is an opportunity for members of Middle School advisory groups to bond through a combination of service and celebration. In the morning, each of the three 6th grade advisory groups went to a different location to serve a local organization, learning about the mission and activities of the organization and how it serves the members of the Alexandria area community.

Tom Kim's group went to Wright to Read, where they sorted books donated for the elementary school book swaps that will occur in Alexandria City Public Schools later this month. Wright to Read, our partner in the Burgundy Book Swap last week, focuses on providing literacy services to students having (or at risk for) difficulties with reading.

Charlene Pritzker's group went to the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria Vola Lawson Animal Shelter in Alexandria. Before going, they created dozens of "Adopt Me" dog and cat bandanas for the shelter to use to encourage adoption of their animals. At the shelter, they made fleece and catnip toys for the cats, took a tour of the shelter, and learned about volunteer opportunities.

Cara Will's group went to Community Lodgings and helped label and organize books to create a library for the students in their learning center program.  Each day, more than 100 at-risk students attend Community Lodgings' afterschool program, drop in for evening tutoring sessions or participate in mentoring activities. On average, children receive 350 hours of academic and general support each year.

After the three service projects, the entire class gathered for the afternoon at a classmate's house for a sumptuous lunch and plenty of fun.

Student Spotlight

Throughout the year, Simone Liu '13 has volunteered every Thursday with an afterschool program run by AHC Inc., a non-profit organization for affordable housing throughout the region. Simone has tutored students, helping children with homework and playing with them each Thursday afternoon, developing relationships with the children and respect for the families. Simone has enjoyed the opportunity to be a regular part of their lives and to see how they have developed as students and people over the course of the year. Simone's volunteer work will also help to open educational opportunities for her students -- click here to watch a video about the impact that tutors make in the program.

During her final day of volunteering, Simone received a poster of gratitude from the students she works with as well as a letter of thanks from the adults who run the program. She plans to continue her role next year. Congratulations, and thank you, Simone! We are proud of your work, and we love hearing about how our students are learning beyond the classroom and developing strong ties within their communities.

Adopt a Highway Program

On Saturday, June 1, a group of Middle School students completed a clean up of Burgundy Road, from our campus at the intersection of Burgundy Road and Norton Road to Telegraph Road via East Street, as part of Burgundy's Adopt a Highway program. Although we did not commit to do so as part of the Adopt a Highway program, other groups of Middle School students also cleaned some of the side streets off Burgundy Road. The team separated trash from recyclable items and then discussed the items found, noting that while the neighborhood streets were fairly clean, there was a lot of trash in the area from Burgundy Road to Telegraph via East Street.

Trail Mix for Meade Memorial Episcopal Church

On Tuesday, June 4, a group of Middle School students put together bags of trail mix for the Meade Memorial Episcopal Church (Meade) lunch program. Meade serves approximately 75 lunches daily to homeless and low-income people.  The trail mix provides a non-perishable source of nutrition for the church to have on hand for those in need.

Staffing Announcement
After four years of working at Burgundy and helping to build our instrumental program, Stephanie Flack, violin teacher, is moving on to new adventures -- local and national!

She will continue to teach at her private studio in Alexandria as well as teaching and performing at the Greater Washington Suzuki Institute in Falls Church and PhoenixPhest! at Eastern Michigan University. She will perform with String Quartet of Northern Virginia and McLean Orchestra, among other organizations, and she will be promoting a new educational and performing endeavor that combines classical and alternate styles with improvisation, which premiered this year at the University of Maryland and is in development for future workshops and performances.

"Burgundy's outstanding faculty has been a pleasure to work with and I will miss the children with whom I have worked these past three years," said Stephanie. "Burgundy is a special place for learning and experiencing the arts, and I truly have enjoyed my years of work with the violin program."

We are so grateful for Stephanie's hard work, and we wish her all the best in her future endeavors.

Parting Pictures

As Kindergarten students prepare to become 1st Grade students, students and teachers from both grades enjoy lunch together to get to know each other.

Friends in Junior Kindergarten honor a year of learning at their "Send Up" celebration.

An annual tradition, seventh-graders create "prayer flags" to give to each of the eighth-graders after graduation.

The 4/5 classes perform for friends and family skits that coincide with their Social Studies units from the year.

Several of Norma Roberts' former students join with her current 2/3 Viceroys students, as well as Buckeyes and other friends, to celebrate her retirement.

Eighth-graders pose for pictures before the graduation ceremony begins.

The 7th Grade students and parents throw a graduation reception, complete with a beautiful cake from Buzz Bakery, in honor of the Class of 2013.
