Greetings!
I have said before that watching our Middle Schoolers in their performing arts productions is like watching children grow up before your eyes. The 8th Grade Musical is a rite of passage for the graduating eighth-graders and also a rite of spring for the entire school community. There is something about a musical that can really touch spirits. We know that music can bring together different generations -- we see examples throughout the year of students, parents, teachers, and even grandparents bonding over music. But when I hear 8th Grade boys singing show tunes at lacrosse practice, I experience a rare example of the kind of fun and confidence that music and theater can inspire in all ages.
Musicals also tie the past and present. The last time the Burgundy 8th Grade performed Damn Yankees was 2005 -- the same year that the Nationals moved back to Washington, DC. This year, we are hopeful, like last season, that the Nats are chasing a pennant! In 2005, the musical was directed by Deborah Ives and Cathy Manley and choreographed by Mary Beth Jonas '98. Middle School teacher Emily Jonas '03, Mary Beth's sister, is choreographing this year's production.
Carrie Ustun, who is helping with much of the production as a parent, has bonded with daughter Anna, who is performing in this year's Damn Yankees, over their shared experience. Carrie performed in the same musical as a baseball player when she was in 8th Grade at Weston Middle School.
Echoing the feeling of watching children mature in an instant, Carrie, who along with husband Jon, a former Burgundy student ('75) and teacher who helped build the set, also offered:
"I saw her on the stage during the preview, and I heard her, and I thought, 'Is that really my daughter?' I had heard her singing all of these weeks leading up to the show, but when they're on stage, all of these elements come together...I'm so proud of her. I'm so proud of the whole class. It's inspiring and contagious to watch a group of kids with so many varied interests bond together and work collaboratively on something like this production. It truly is a field of dreams...coming together to begin a new journey together!"
Revisiting this musical does not mean we are repeating old ideas, though. This class has taken a completely different approach to a timeless script and story, bringing different energy, different choreography, and, perhaps best of all, professional sound (from Audio Services of Virginia), which means this year's audience will be better able to appreciate some lovely voices!
Cathy and Deborah knew that this sporty musical would be a good fit for this athletic class, and they were right: since the start, the kids have been engaged and attentive, and the students have bonded over this experience, especially in the past week. Thus, it's a great way to end the year. Congratulations and thank you to the students and the parents, and to Cathy, Deborah and Emily.
I hope everyone is able to come out and enjoy the performances (tonight and tomorrow at 7:30 p.m.).
Sincerely,
Jeff Sindler Head of School |

Burgundy Book Collection and Book Swap
From Monday, May 20 through Thursday, May 23, students can bring to their classes gently used books suitable for Junior Kindergarten through 8th Grade readers. Middle School volunteers will gather and organize these books in the Loft for a school-wide Book Swap. On Friday, May 24, all students will visit the Book Swap during the school day, and everyone will be able to choose one book to take home (regardless of how many books the student donated).
All books not chosen by Burgundy students will be donated to Wright to Read for distribution at book swaps at Polk School (Friday, June 14) and at Cora Kelly School (Tuesday, June 18), from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Burgundy Middle School students are encouraged to volunteer at either or both of these events and will be helping students choose books. Please contact Charlene Pritzker (charlenep@burgundyfarm.org or 703.960.3431 x513) for more information.

Sports Update Lacrosse The lacrosse team Friday evened its record at 2-2 with a win over friendly rival St. Ignatius Loyola Academy (Jeff's former school in Baltimore). The team's other win came versus St. Thomas Aquinas, with whom the team plays its final contest next Wednesday, at home, at 3:45 p.m. Friday's game was followed by the annual cookout in honor of the visiting team. Players from both teams ate hamburgers and mixed and enjoyed the campus together for an hour before the St. Ignatius team departed.
When asked about the season thus far, Jeff responded: "The spring season is brief and practice time is hard to come by. But I have greatly enjoyed this fine group of boys, and they have grown as lacrosse players and athletes, and become good teammates. I am proud of them. Third-year players and Burgundy eighth-graders Alec Coakley, Sammy Entabi and Kyle Cafeo have been outstanding and unselfish players, as well as friendly mentors for the younger players. Each has the ability to contribute to a high school program if he chooses."
Softball At the softball game last Thursday against Alexandria Country Day School, Burgundy was down 2-1 and had one more player at bat when the game was called early due to rain. Despite the weather, the girls played very well. Lindsay Cullen '13 pitched five strike outs, and Ahmei Thevoz '14 had an amazing hit into the outfield. Coach Emily Jonas commented that all the girls' skills have improved immensely in just a short amount of time. Good luck to the softball team at their final game of the season on Wednesday, May 22, when they will travel to play against St. Thomas Aquinas. |
Community Service On Thursday, May 9, Antioch Sanders '14 and Eamon Abramson '15 did a wonderful job painting bookcases that Middle School students had constructed several weeks ago for apartments for families transitioning from homelessness. These will be installed in alcoves in the living rooms of four apartments to provide storage for books, toys and games. The same afternoon, another group of students was redecorating the girls' bathroom in the Middle School. Following the vision of a group of 8th Grade girls, this group painted the walls pink, and put in each stall a different geometric design of pink on white, with a related quote in silver on the door. They are still working on removing paper and glue from comics pasted on the wall in a previous decoration project from several years ago. When the painting is complete, they will add decorations, including black and white pictures taken, developed and printed by Middle School students. On Saturday, May 11, Middle School students worked at three sites as part of the annual United States Postal Service Food Drive. Each year, letter carriers pick up non-perishable food from residents along their routes and deliver them to their local post office as they complete their rounds. Local non-profits then sort and store the food, which is later distributed to individuals and families in need. Students this year helped ALIVE and Koinonia by sorting the food collected and helping to store it for future use. Reminder: Eighth-Graders Invited to Community Service FairGeorgetown Day School High School is hosting a Community Service Fair on Monday, May 20, for high school students (including rising ninth-graders) to learn about metro DC non-profits and service opportunities. For more information, click here. |
Thanks to Burgundy Student Ambassadors
Burgundy's Student Ambassadors (a select group of Middle School students) are reminded to attend a pizza lunch on Monday, May 20 at 12:00 p.m. at the picnic tables outside of the Meyers Barn to thank them for their assistance throughout the school year. Student Ambassadors assist the Admission Office by hosting visiting prospective students and touring prospective families during Admission Open House events among myriad other activities that support new student recruitment. (Rain location will be in the Gym.)
