 Greetings!
One of the comments we frequently hear at Burgundy Open House tours is, "Wow! I wish I could go to school here!" And it is not just prospective students who say it, but very often their parents as well. When people are introduced to our wonderful campus for the first time, when they have the chance to talk to the teachers and hear from parents, you can see the dream of becoming part of this community begin to take hold.
The idea behind Burgundy's annual Auction is to help make this dream come true for students and families who would otherwise be unable to attend our wonderful school. All of the money raised at the Auction goes directly to financial aid for Burgundy students. One in five of our students receives some level of financial aid, and our school is all the richer because those students and families are a part of our community. We hope that you will all give as generously as you are able at the Auction so that the Burgundy dream can remain a reality for all of our community members.
This year, in addition to the crucial work of raising those financial aid funds, the Auction is also highlighting some of the unique attributes of Burgundy itself and our mission of sustainability and responsible environmental stewardship. Please look around and take note of the natural elements taken from our campus (do you remember the tree that fell on 4/5 during the hurricane in October?). We hope you will enjoy seeing some of the ways in which we have brought the outdoors in.
Each year we have the opportunity to dress up, have a fantastic meal, mingle with friends and make new acquaintances, bid on wonderful items, and win great prizes, all while helping a wonderful cause. We have added some new, fun activities this year, such as a photo booth (a Burgundy Auction first!) and Sign-Up Parties. We look forward to seeing you all there, but mostly we look forward to greeting new students and families in the fall who will be able to attend our school because of the generosity shown by our whole community on Auction night.
See you on Saturday!
Sincerely,
Amy Heist and Amanda Traub 2013 Auction Co-Chairs |

Auction Update: Catalogs & Sign-Up PartiesAfter weeks (and months!) of preparation, the auction is tomorrow night, March 9, at 6:30 p.m. in the Gym. Please check your child's backpack for the auction catalog, which we sent home earlier this week. One catalog goes home to each family, and it is your guide to all the evening's great happenings and exciting items. Don't forget to bring your catalog to the auction tomorrow night -- we will have a very limited supply at the event. Within the catalog, you will notice a new category: Sign-Up Parties. These parties provide opportunities for many children or adults to take advantage of the same event for a set price as opposed to bidding against each other. Each party has already indicated a date and time, as well as the maximum number of participants. The first people to sign up to attend these events (by writing their auction bidder numbers on the event description at the auction) will win the opportunity to participate in the event offered. For a full list of Sign-Up Parties, click here. |
Arts Festival: March 14 and 15 Please join us for Burgundy's spectacular Arts Festival next week! On Thursday, March 14, and Friday, March 15 at 6:30 p.m., an incredible variety of artwork from every student at Burgundy will be on display in the Loft. The Loft will be filled with various media, from clay to photography to drawing to junk art; and brief musical performances will punctuate the celebration. This year will spotlight 20th century artists the students have been studying, with student work inspired by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Frida Kahlo, Jackson Pollock and Alexander Calder. There are a few fun surprises in the works, including Picasso Dogs by the 4/5 Coopers; Cirque de Burgundy, a 2/3 Buckeye extravaganza based on Calder's Circus; and a Robot Invasion by the 3rd Grade Viceroys. Don't miss this and all the other gorgeous artwork by all of Burgundy's talented students! |
Student Spotlight
The 4/5 Coopers and Redtails are researching plants and other goods that were brought to or from the New World during the Columbian Exchange. Inspired by her research about blueberries, Maddie Kocher wrote this poem, which was not an assignment but a personal venture that she shared with her classmates. |
Sports Update On Monday, the Varsity Boys' Black Basketball Team defeated Capitol Hill Day School 48-32 in their first game of the quarter-finals. They will take on either Edlin School or Alexandria Country Day School in the semi-finals on Wednesday, March 13 at 3:45 p.m. It's a home game, so make sure to come out and cheer on the Blazers!
Because of the winter storm, Wednesday's Varsity Girls' Basketball quarter-finals game against Browne Academy has been rescheduled for Monday, March 11 at 3:45 p.m. at Browne. Go Blazers! |
Garden Work Day: March 17 Have you been craving time in the garden? Good news! Our first Garden Work Day of the year is Sunday, March 17 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. We will be preparing the beds for spring planting, and everyone is welcome to attend. It's a great way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day and the fact that spring is right around the corner! Please email Jill Reuter (jreuter@answerware.com) or Jane Hanson (janehanson@yahoo.com) with any questions.

Burgundy Barnyard Added to Family Resources on Website
The Burgundy Barnyard is a web page that serves as a "jumping-off point" to a variety of academic resources online. At school, the Burgundy Barnyard is set as the home page on our internet browsers on computers that students and teachers use. To provide an easy way for students and parents to access the Burgundy Barnyard from home, we have added a link to the page from the "Family Resources" navigation link at the bottom of the Burgundy website. Now everyone can use the links provided there to access: - Burgundy Barnyard
- Community Resources (documents and information of importance to parents)
- PCR Family Portal
- Haiku Login

Our next Middle School Book Talk will be about Silent Spring by Rachel Carson. Not only is this the central text of the next unit in the 8th Grade Humanities curriculum, it's also the 50th anniversary of this seminal book of the Green Movement. We invite you to come by and join us to discuss the 60s, pesticides, sustainability, science journalism, and whatever else strikes your fancy. We will host this Book Talk on Monday, March 18, from 8:40 to 9:40 a.m. in the Library.
If you are interested in attending please RSVP to Stephanie Borges (stephanieb@burgundyfarm.org or 703.842.0465), so that we may plan accordingly.

Statewide Tornado Drill: March 12
Through the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) and National Weather Service, Burgundy will participate in a Statewide Tornado Drill on Tuesday, March 12, at 9:45 a.m. To start the tornado drill, the National Weather Service will send a test warning to NOAA Weather Radios. These radios will sound a tone alert and message, simulating what people will hear or see during an actual tornado warning. Many local radio and TV stations will then broadcast the test message. This is only a test and not an actual tornado. At the same time, our faculty and staff will lead students through a tornado drill on campus.
If you have any questions about the Statewide Tornado Drill, please contact Laura Southard, Public Outreach Coordinator at VDEM (804.897.9732 or laura.southard@vdem.virginia.gov). If you have any questions about Burgundy's participation in the drill, please contact Mary Mehala (marym@burgundyfarm.org).
