Greetings!
Before I offer a playful recollection of my Valentine's Day field trip, I wanted to thank our BPA Executive Committee, Board of Trustees, Administrative Team and all the parents, in particular, who attended our Annual Meeting of the Burgundy Corporation/All Parent Meeting on Tuesday. After a welcome from BPA President Nancy Weissman, Board Vice President Dave Wales, in President Holly Sloan's absence, gave an overview of the Board's role at Burgundy. Seileen Mullen, Annual Giving Chair, spoke of why we have Annual Giving and the important role it plays in ensuring we can be the kind of school we are. BPA Vice President and Auction Co-Chair Amy Heist followed Seileen with a tantalizing preview of this year's Auction and offered the rationale -- support for financial aid -- that makes such a memorable adults' night out each year so important. Finally, I offered some remarks on the state of the school and the latest updates and plans for Phase I and Phase II of the Campus Renewal Initiative (CRI). This was followed by an open question and answer session. We thank the group of roughly 70 parents who attended!
Now to my story. First, I hope you all had a lovely Valentine's Day! I enjoyed mine by joining the Kindergarten Polar Bears and Penguins on a Valentine's luncheon field trip to the Macaroni Grill in Kingstowne, my first-ever non-Cove field trip at Burgundy and a dandy.
The kindergarteners had discussed proper dining etiquette, nutrition, and dining out prior to the event. They had Burgundy name tags hanging around their necks.
Students were eager, venturing out on a sunny day, but they were hushed as they entered the mood-setting darkness in the restaurant. "Does it seem like there's no lighting in here?" asked one little girl. We were seated in a back area, cafe-style, at five-person round tables. We received the 'full treatment' from the wait staff, including bread and beverage service (four juice choices or water). Main courses were pre-selected. Students enjoyed drawing on the (paper) tablecloths (crayons provided by Macaroni Grill are standard) while they waited for their lunches to arrive. Broccoli was the side dish accompanying either spaghetti, chicken strips, or macaroni and cheese. A few students, it should be noted, ate all their broccoli.
Throughout the lunch the students were impeccably behaved. Only two cups were overturned, and no harm was done. After about an hour of lunchtime conversation, it was nearly time to go. But alas: a surprise awaited. Krista, one of our recent substitute teachers, is a waitperson at Macaroni Grill and operatic singer, and she entranced our kindergartners with two selections in Italian!
Following a group photo in front of the restaurant, and equipped with gift certificate enticements for their families, the students and their teachers returned to campus. I believe I am going to have to get out more often with our field trips, if this one was any indication!
Sincerely,
Jeff Sindler Head of School |

Board of Trustees Elections
The Burgundy Board of Trustees invites you to vote in the annual election of Trustees. You are eligible to vote if you are a current parent or guardian of a student (each parent/guardian has a vote), a life member as defined in the Burgundy Bylaws, or an employee of the School. The Committee on Trustees recommended the slate of candidates (each for a three-year term) to the Board of Trustees. The candidates are not in competition with each other, and a nominee shall be elected if the number of votes cast "for" such nominee exceeds the number of votes cast "against" such nominee. There are six candidates on the ballot. Please cast your vote in the election by marking yes, no or abstain for EACH candidate and then submitting your ballot. You can access the ballot by clicking here. If you encounter any difficulties or have any questions, contact Nancy Piper, Chair of the Committee on Trustees, at npiper@virginiasoftware.com.

Burgundy on Broadway: Students' PerspectivesTwo Burgundy on Broadway (B.O.B.) actors share below what they've enjoyed about the show's pre-production process. We hope you'll come see the performance on February 21 and 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the Loft to see the culmination of their hard work!
B.O.B. is really fun! It's fun when we all get to dance around and sing. I think everyone has fun at B.O.B. I love the dancing most of all. B.O.B. is a really good time to get all your energy out too with all the dancing and singing; it's also nice because I can see my friends I don't have classes with. I think B.O.B. is a very fun and active way to learn and rehearse our musical. I think most people enjoy B.O.B. because it's much different from our other classes, and we get to move much more. I hope you will come see B.O.B. It will be a great show.
-Vivian Gillman
B.O.B. is a really great experience. I love that we get the great opportunity to perform plays. I really like the singing and dancing aspects of the plays but also that I get to spend more time with my friends that I don't have many classes with. Rehearsals are a fun time to get my energy out while working and singing for others' enjoyment. It is an active and enjoyable time for students and teachers because students get to move around and have fun, but we are still doing work. I hope you will come see our show! -Thomas Heist |

Middle School Students Help Alexandria Family Transition from Homelessness
This March, eight formerly homeless Alexandria families will move into apartments newly renovated, furnished and decorated in part by Middle School students from Burgundy. Community Lodgings has furnished the apartments and teamed with 17 local people and groups, who have each "adopted" an apartment and provided other necessities for starting a home, including linens, kitchen supplies, window coverings, decorations, and more.
"This project offered a fun, unique, hands-on opportunity for our students to use their creativity and make a hugely positive, direct and long-lasting impact in their immediate community," said Charlene Pritzker, Community Service Coordinator at Burgundy. "Through the process they are also learning life skills, like how to budget, how to outfit a home, and how to solve real-life problems."
The Burgundy students have been collaborating on the project since January, when they first met to see photographs of the two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment, determine a plan of action, divide into teams (two bedroom and bathroom teams, one kitchen team, one living room team), and begin looking through catalogs for items they needed. They have since shopped for items together, delivered them to the apartment and decorated the apartment.
"Coming from a homeless shelter into a beautiful new space like this changes someone's outlook immensely," said Bonnie Baxley, Executive Director of Community Lodgings. "These students are empowering a family to live independently and self-sufficiently and to become contributing members of our society. These apartments are for Alexandria families, but the benefits of the work that Burgundy is doing with Community Lodgings extends far beyond Alexandria."
Burgundy parents have been a huge help in making this project successful. We'd like to thank all of the adults who have supported design and construction, carpooled to shops and guided shopping decisions, and so much more. Thank you!
