Greetings!
On Tuesday, February 12, at 7:00 p.m. in the Loft, we will hold our second All Parent Meeting this year and our Annual Meeting of the Corporation. At this meeting we will introduce the slate of candidates for this year's new Board of Trustees members, on which members will later vote.
As you may or may not know, all parents and full- and part-time employees are members of the Burgundy corporation and have voting rights. You should have received your ballot by email yesterday, and you can contact my assistant, Cathy Guertin (cathyg@burgundyfarm.org) with questions about the ballot.
Tuesday's meeting will also include brief updates from the Board and me, including some reflections on Campus Renewal and other topical issues, followed by time for questions and answers between parents and school leadership.
This evening is an opportunity to hear direct updates about the school, to ask questions and to engage in discussion. We hope to see you there. Please make sure to register here, so we can plan accordingly. Coffee and dessert will be available from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m.
Sincerely,
Jeff Sindler Head of School |

He is a lawyer and former financial analyst with experience advising and executing tax-exempt bond financing for charter schools, school districts and universities. Arkan is a founding partner of Burgher Gray Haile & Jaffe LLP, and his experience in finance has been valuable in his work with Burgundy's Finance Committee and Campus Renewal financing efforts this year. Arkan and his wife, Naz Medhanie, live in Washington, D.C., with their two children, Remiel and Milen.
Dale Johnson
Dale has been the Head of School at The Field School for nine years, and some of his accomplishments in this role include nearly tripling the percentage of the annual operating budget devoted to financial aid, raising teacher salaries, and more than doubling the amount raised for the school's annual fund. Most recently, Dale initiated a significant expansion and renovation plan for the school. He has 23 years of education experience, from teaching to coaching to administration. Dale currently serves as board treasurer/secretary for Independent Education, the DC-area association of independent schools. Dale is married and has two sons at The Field School.
Sarah Kim
Sarah and her husband Tae have been involved with Burgundy since enrolling daughter Taryn, 1st Grade Goats, in JK in 2010. Sarah currently serves as Vice President, Business Operations with the Armed Forces Services Corporation. Sarah's professional specialties include streamlining project management environments and standardizing processes and procedures. She has extensive experience in managing, mentoring, training and motivating staff in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
Joseph (Joe) Liu This year, Joe completes his first three-year term on the Board. Joe and his wife, Megan Glasheen, joined the Burgundy community when their daughter, Simone '14, began JK in 2004. His professional career spans more than 20 years in nonprofit management and advocacy for children and families. Joe helps build vibrant organizations characterized by innovative thinking, disciplined long-term strategies, and an opportunistic zeal for results. Currently, he is Senior Advisor for Social Impact at AARP where he leads public opinion research, messaging, and communications efforts. His management experience includes starting up the Casey Strategic Consulting Group and management consulting with The Lewin Group and the Advisory Board Company. Joe has also been a lobbyist for the National Association of Community Health Centers, the Children's Defense Fund and the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
Joanne Petty
Joanne and her husband Josh have three children, Jacob, 2/3 Buckeyes; Amelia, 1st Grade Sheep; and Noah, age 4. They have been devoted and active Burgundy parents since 2010. Joanne, with roughly 10 years of experience as a civil litigation attorney representing local governments and school boards in Chicago, has been actively supporting DC-area philanthropies and volunteering with her children's schools since they moved to Arlington in 2007. She is currently a member of the Board of Directors at Doorways for Women and Families, where she is serving on the Governance and Facilities committees and overseeing the domestic violence safe-house renovation. In the last election cycle, she managed Noah Simon's campaign for Arlington County School Board, in which he was elected with more votes than any other school board candidate in the county's history. Burgundy on Broadway: Dreams and Magic
On Thursday, February 21, and Friday, February 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the Loft, sixth-graders will perform Burgundy on Broadway: Dreams and Magic, a musical revue that includes a wide-ranging repertoire, from classic rock to beloved ballads to songs from Harry Potter and Oklahoma! Burgundy on Broadway is an annual tradition for the school. Director of Music Cathy Manley chooses the theme and songs each year, which provide the framework for the students to help craft the storyline. This year, students have incorporated a choreographed quidditch match, a puppet show, some spoken narration, plenty of dancing, and, for the first time in Burgundy on Broadway history, a clarinet performance.
"Our music program at Burgundy is growing, and the increasing strength of Burgundy on Broadway is a testament to that growth," says Cathy. "This is the first class of students who have been enrolled in our instrumental music program from its start, so that's why we're able to incorporate the clarinets; and we're also able to utilize their singing talent with three-part harmonies and an eclectic mix of songs that everyone loves."
To make the show a success, parents and grandparents are lending their professional talents as sound and light engineers and set and costume designers, among other tasks. Students will also pair with their parents for father-son set-building days and similar preparatory events, of course listening to the show's soundtrack as background music and supplementary auditory rehearsal.
"The most incredible thing about Burgundy on Broadway is how it connects the community," says Cathy. "Kids and parents are working together, and throughout the journey, they are connecting through great music. It's an example of how music can be a powerful medium for sharing experiences and uniting very different people and different generations."
Tickets are $5 at the door ($1 for children).
