Greetings!

Like many of your families, my family includes U.S. Armed Forces veterans. My father, as an Air Force doctor stationed in the Philippines, where my sister was born, tended  to some of the first wounded from the Korean Conflict. And my two adult sons currently serve in the Army and have done extended tours in Iran and Afghanistan. One of them on Monday completed his helicopter pilot training and certification.

Serving our nation to ensure our security and that of other peoples around the world requires the most profound courage, dedication and sacrifice. Those articles, along with faith and hope, are shared by the families of servicemen and women, especially when a family member must ship out to a conflict zone.

Therefore, at this Veterans Day I ask us all to take time out to appreciate veterans' contributions to our great nation and to honor their very special commitment!

Sincerely,
Jeff_Signature

Board Briefs: Call for Nominations

The Board of Trustees is a dynamic volunteer group of Burgundy parents, alumni and supporters that is charged with ensuring the long-term stability and financial viability of Burgundy. Each year the Burgundy community has the opportunity to elect several new members to the Board while ensuring an important degree of year-to-year continuity among existing Trustees. If you are interested in or have questions about service as a Trustee, or if you know of someone who might be interested, please contact Nancy Piper, Chair of the Committee on Trustees (npiper@virginiasosftware.com or 703-765-5440).

Haroun and the Sea of Stories: November 15 and 16
The seventh-graders will perform Haroun and the Sea of Stories on November 15 and 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Loft. Tickets are $5 for adults and $1 for students, and they can be purchased at the door. The script is one that highlights the value of storytelling; and in that spirit, some of our 7th Grade actors have been sharing via Constant Comment how they interpret the story, and why the entire Burgundy family should attend the performances. This week's paragraph comes from Brielle Quarles:

Haroun and the Sea of Stories by Salman Rushdie is a book that is very similar to the play. Haroun Khalifa is a young child who lives in a sad city that becomes even sadder when her mother runs away with the upstairs neighbor. Now it is just her and her father, Rashid Khalifa. Rashid is a storyteller but after Haroun's mother leaves, he no longer has the gift of the gab. Haroun leaves her own world and enters the moon of Khani or "Story" to help get Rashid's story water supply turned back on. But little did Haroun know, while on her quest to help her father she ends up helping everyone who lives on Khani.
Sports Success: Varsity Soccer Advances to Finals!
The Burgundy Blazers finished undefeated in the regular season and were seeded first for the playoffs. With one of our games cancelled due to rain, the team finished with four wins and one tie. The team played offensive soccer, scoring 23 goals and conceding only seven.

On Wednesday, November 7, the team won its semifinal game against Edlin School 1-0. Our team was showing good teamwork throughout the game; however, the game remained scoreless at halftime. Ten minutes before the end of the game, Burgundy scored the winning goal of the match and managed to hold off Edlin's attacks in the remainder of the regulation time. Burgundy will play the final game at Bishop Ireton High School on Tuesday, November 13 at 4:00 p.m. Come support the team in their final match of the season!

Introducing Anne Rocha, Kindergarten Art Teacher
Q. How would you introduce yourself to the Burgundy community?

A. I am an artist and graphic designer. I have been doing art since my childhood. I love to paint with acrylics on big canvas! One of my passions is to express my love of life through bright colors. To be able to teach this passion to kids is very satisfying. I love the outdoors, whitewater kayaking, mountain biking, jogging through the woods with my dog, and gardening. And I really enjoy being around kids.

Q. Why did you decide to teach at Burgundy?

A. The first time I came to visit the school with my friend Monica Campbell, I totally fell in love with the campus. The fact that the school is in a farm with animals and has an incredible garden is fantastic! Monica always told me how much she loves to work here. Also, everyone I meet at Burgundy is always so welcoming and friendly. All of these great qualities made my decision so easy when the opportunity to teach at Burgundy came to me. I am so grateful to be part of the Burgundy family.

Q. What are you most excited about in teaching Kindergarten Art at Burgundy?

A. Teaching art to the Polar Bears and Penguins is so much fun! I love all of them! I enjoy so much to be present in their creativity; I love their artistic view, and their clever way around solving art problems. The way they love to paint excites me in my own paintings! Their passion for art makes me even more excited about teaching art. The Kindergarten kids are fantastic artists. I am so lucky and blessed to teach at Burgundy.

A Conversation About Teens and Tweens

Have you ever tried having a discussion with your teen or tween (pre-teen) about tough topics such as being responsible, respecting yourself and others, completing homework independently, dating, or body image? If so, then you've probably heard them say, "Yuck," "I don't feel like talking," or ... nothing, just silence...

Not to fear, Elizabeth and Stephanie are here!

Please join School Counselor Elizabeth Schachter and Director for an Inclusive Community and Middle School Support Coordinator Stephanie Borges for a conversation/information session on November 15 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Library. Together, we will help you understand where your child is developmentally by breaking down developmental milestones, both academic and social-emotional. If you are planning on attending please
RSVP (stephanieb@burgundyfarm.org or 703.842.0465), so that we have an accurate count to help us plan accordingly. All parents are welcome. We hope to see you next Thursday!
Grandparents and Special Friends Day: November 20

We hope you'll join us on Tuesday, November 20, for Grandparents and Special Friends Day honoring Barbara Simmons as our Special Friend of the Year. Beginning at 8:30 a.m., we will gather in the Gym for coffee and pastries. The program will start at 9:30 a.m., followed by classroom visits at 10:30 a.m. Classes will dismiss at 12:00 p.m., and there will be no afternoon bus service or Extended Day.

No need to RSVP, but if you have questions, please call 703.960.3431. There will be parking and a shuttle service at Sunset Hills Baptist Church (at the corner of Franconia and Norton Roads).

Cove Closing Weekend Thanks
MANY THANKS to these voters for coming out in bitter cold grey weather to close the Cove and cast their votes. Throughout nominations, debates, stump speeches, advertisements, and a modicum of pandering and ballot-box stuffing, they came together in a tremendous tripartisan effort and got the job done. Should you be curious to learn more, the full details and photos of the weekend can be found on the BCWS Facebook page.

Girls on the Run: Community Service Collection

As part of the Girls On The Run (GOTR) mission and curriculum, participants are required to select a Community Impact Project. This year, Burgundy 's GOTR team has decided to support the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria. The Welfare League is an independent non-profit and is contracted with the City of Alexandria to provide animal care, control, and sheltering services. As part of the contract, the League operates the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter, an open-admission facility accepting any and all animals brought to them.  The Animal Welfare League relies heavily on donations of supplies. The Burgundy GOTR team's goal is to collect as many items as possible from the League's "Wish List". Click here for donation ideas, and bring them to school on Tuesday, November 13 and Friday, November 16. We will have someone available at carpool to help collect them.

Lost and Found Items in the Main Office
The following items were lost on campus, and because of their perceived value, we are holding them in the Main Office rather than putting them in the Lost and Found in the Loft. If any of these items may belong to you, please call or stop by the Main Office.
  • Password-protected Kindle
  • Black Casio watch
  • Silver bracelet with stones
  • Red earring
