Greetings!
This issue of Constant Comment is brief, including mostly need-to-knows!
First of all, our Capital Area Progressive Schools (CAPS) conference last Friday was fantastic. We received rave reviews from numerous teachers and administrators from other schools. I myself attended several sessions, and I can personally vouch that our teachers and administrators not only shared valuable information but were exposed to innovative coursework, concepts, and data that will help us continue to grow as educators and as a school. As you are well aware, professional development is a critical investment of our time and energy because of the tools we gain to pass on to our students, and this was one of the best conferences I have attended in recent years.
Finally, most important, we again count our blessings -- for the lovely campus and community we share and for the fact that we were largely spared by Sandy.
As a final reminder, please note that Monday, November 26, the Monday following the Thanksgiving break, is now a regular school day.
Sincerely,
Jeff Sindler Head of School |

National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month
November is National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month. Throughout our history, American Indian and Alaska Native peoples have been an integral part of the American character. Against the odds, America's first peoples have endured, and they remain a vital cultural, political, social, and moral presence. Tribal America has brought to this great country certain values and ideas that have become ingrained in the American spirit: the knowledge that humans can thrive and prosper without destroying the natural environment; the understanding that people from very different backgrounds, cultures, religions, and traditions can come together to build a great country; and the awareness that diversity can be a source of strength rather than division. - President William J. Clinton Venture over to the Diversity Haiku page to learn more about National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month, and other cultural, religious and social events. Some of the topics we'll highlight this month include: - All Saints' Day
- Diwali
- Hijri New Year, also known as Islamic New Year
- International Day of Tolerance
- National Adoption Awareness Month
- Universal Children's Day
- Vegan Awareness Month
- World Freedom Day
- World Kindness Day
- And more!

Haroun and the Sea of Stories: November 15 and 16
The seventh-graders will perform Haroun and the Sea of Stories on November 15 and 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Loft. The script is one that highlights the value of storytelling; and in that spirit, some of our 7th Grade actors will share via upcoming issues of Constant Comment how they interpret the story, and why the entire Burgundy family should attend the performances. This week's paragraph comes from Simone Liu:
Haroun and the Sea of Stories is the story of a child and her quest to save The Ocean of the Streams of Story, and all of storytelling. She is the daughter of Rashid Khalifa, a famous storyteller who loses the gift of gab after his wife, Soraya, leaves. Along Haroun's journey, she meets many a colorful character, including multi-mouthed fish and a talking shadow, which leads to an interesting voyage.
