CAPS Conference: No Classes, No Extended Day

Click here for a full calendar.
Greetings!

On Tuesday evening the Burgundy Parent Association (BPA) welcomed parents to a dessert and "All Parents Meeting" in the Loft. This meeting, fashioned by BPA President Nancy Weissman and her BPA Executive Committee in collaboration with Burgundy's Administrative Team and Board President Holly Sloan, responded to a desire expressed by parents for more accessible, evening parent meetings.

In recent years, BPA Room Parent meetings have provided updates and opportunity for direct discussion with administrators for a limited number of parents. This new forum drew approximately 85 parents who, following brief reflections from Nancy, Kari, Jason, Holly and me, were able to ask questions.

The evening event made it easier for working parents to attend the meeting. Complimentary childcare was also provided in Extended Day. And, because parents could submit topics for discussion during the registration process, they helped create the evening's agenda.

About an hour of Q&A followed the introductory comments and allowed for clear, open dialogue that addressed parents' most pressing questions and ideas, from homework and testing to the Fall Fair and Campus Renewal.

Again, a special thanks and congratulations to Nancy Weissman, BPA President, who listened to parent feedback and organized a new format to meet parents' needs!

Thanks also to everyone who attended. We hope you've marked your calendars for the next All Parent Meeting on February 12, 2013, and we look forward to seeing you there. Of course, we welcome questions and one-on-one meetings prior to that!

I also look forward to seeing you tomorrow at the Fall Fair!

Sincerely,
Jeff_Signature

Reminders
No School on Friday, October 26
Thanks to Kari Cafeo's leadership, Burgundy is hosting the Capital Area Progressive Schools (CAPS) Conference on Friday, October 26. We will welcome roughly 200 educators and school administrators from the Beltway and beyond to discuss and inspire best practices in education. Because of the conference, there will be no classes and no Extended Day on Friday, October 26.

Applications for New Students of Current Families Due November 15
Current families and/or faculty and staff members who would like to apply for admission for the 2013-2014 school year for any of their children who are not currently enrolled at Burgundy are encouraged to do so by November 15. Visits for these students will be scheduled in early December. Our online application may be accessed here or on our website under "Admission" in the "Applying to Burgundy" section.  Please feel free to contact Lori Adams (loria@burgundyfarm.org or 703.842.0464) if you have any questions or need assistance with the online application.
The Fall Fair is Tomorrow!

We're expecting a mild and sunny day tomorrow -- perfect for the Fall Fair! Two brief and essential notes:

Volunteer Sign In

Many thanks to all the parent, student, faculty and staff volunteers who are helping to make the Fall Fair a great success tomorrow. When you arrive on the Blacktop, look for the Volunteer Sign-In station to check in and get additional information about your shift.

Parking

There will be no parking on campus during the Fall Fair, so we ask you to park instead at Sunset Hills Baptist Church (corner of Norton Road and Franconia Road) or the Fairfax County School Technology Center (3701 Franconia Road). A shuttle bus will travel between these sites and Burgundy, starting at 10:30 a.m. The last shuttle will leave Burgundy at 3:30 p.m. If you choose to park on neighborhood streets, please park only next to a white curb (if you don't see a curb, you're in a no-parking zone). Do not turn around in or block anyone's driveway. You may be ticketed or towed.

Sixth-Graders Visit Virginia Historical Society

On September 21, the 6th Grade class took a field trip to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond for a tour of the museum's collection of ancient antiquities and mythology-related art. Sixth-graders had been working on a research project about the cultural differences between various geographical regions of Ancient Greece, and the trip provided them with direct access to relevant archaeological pieces. The docents that guided our students around the museum noted how enthusiastic and knowledgeable they were!

Opportunities like these enrich classroom experiences for our students and are made possible by your generous contributions to Burgundy's Annual Giving Fund.
Student Spotlight

On Monday morning more than 30 Middle School students, family members and teachers braved the 50-degree weather and threatening clouds to help clean up the Occoquan River at Fountainhead Regional Park. They went out  on the water in canoes, kayaks and jon boats to collect a huge amount of trash that had settled in the coves around the edge of the water.  Their trash collection filled more than an entire truck!  In addition to the expected bottles and pieces of plastic, they found tires, chairs, a slab of formica, assorted buckets of building materials and more. Many celebrated their efforts with a picnic lunch in one of the park's shelters.

Sports Success
Burgundy's JV Soccer won their game against Browne Academy on Wednesday, October 10. Eliza Marcus '16 scored the game-winning goal on a rebound of a long shot by Nicholas Sansone '15. Goalkeeper Hammat Babin '15 made two big second-half saves to preserve the win! And even though the game was at Browne, Burgundy's fans more than doubled the home team's fans!

The JV Soccer team takes on Capitol Hill Country Day School this afternoon at 3:45 on Burgundy's field. Come out and cheer on the Blazers!
Help the Homeless Mini Walk
On Wednesday, October 31, Burgundy students will participate together in the Help the Homeless Mini-Walk on campus after the All School Meeting. This annual community service event, sponsored by Fannie Mae, will help raise funds for New Hope Housing, which operates several homeless shelters in Fairfax County, Alexandria and Arlington. Burgundy has partnered with New Hope Housing for roughly 10 years, raising thousands of dollars for New Hope's work in our community.

All students will participate in the walk, and all parents are welcome to register and join the walk as well. However, to be counted by Fannie Mae as an official walker, students must submit a registration form signed by his or her parent. There is a registration fee of $20, though all students will participate in the walk regardless of payment. Many parents choose to donate more than $20, so that all students can be counted as official walkers. If you choose to take this opportunity to help the homeless, please send in a check made payable to "Help the Homeless" with the registration form, which your child will bring home this week. If not, simply sign the registration form and return it. You can also fill out the form and donate online

It is essential that everyone fill out a registration form. If we have 250 registered walkers, Fannie Mae will donate an additional $5,000 to New Hope Housing. We have reached this goal in past years -- please help us continue this noble tradition!

Please note: Registration forms mention t-shirts, which we are not ordering this year because of parent feedback.
Cove Closing Weekend: November 3-4

This year we are closing up Cooper's Cove for the winter on the weekend of November 3 and 4, and everyone is invited to come help!

It's a family-friendly event, and you are welcome to come for all or any part of the time. It's mostly a lot of hauling, packing, storing and weather-proofing, but it's also a time to enjoy the Cove at a very pretty time of year in the company of other people who love being there so much that they just don't care what the weather brings.  We all have a great time visiting as we work, we take time out for a nice walk and we enjoy catching up around the fire in the evening. We promise to feed you well, and all you have to bring is yourself, a pair of favorite work gloves,  and the usual bedding/layers of clothing that you would for a vigorous Cove visit. Children of all ages are welcome, and we do put them to work; but parents are completely responsible for any children they bring. This year we are going to try putting children in teams supervised by a couple of adults to carry out some group tasks, freeing up most adults to do the less child-friendly stuff.

Still interested?  Let us know you are coming by emailing vinis@burgundyfarm.org.

We need to know: how many/for what meals/any dietary issues.

See you there!

Middle School Book Talk, The Tempest: October 18

The next Middle School Parents' Book Talk will center around The Tempest by William Shakespeare, which will be featured in the 8th Grade curriculum. Feel free to read it in advance and/or watch a performance of the play ahead of time on DVD. Even if you're not an 8th Grade parent, we'd love to have your company and input. We'll start the evening's conversation at 6:00 p.m. in the Library on October 18 with light refreshments.

After our last Book Talk centered around The Shawl, we received this note from a parent attendee:

Two things really stood out tonight -- your enthusiasm for creating opportunities for students to better understand themselves and others; as well your hope that parents will work with faculty to reinforce and expand that learning.  Well done.  The way you articulated the kind of progressive learning "Shawl" can inspire told the story of Burgundy's humanities program from start to finish (6-8) and how the school nurtures critical thinking.  You illustrated how the curriculum connects and deepens each year;  how connections are encouraged through the entire curriculum; and how it will help students not only build academic skills but understanding.

We hope to see you there!

Pumpkins for Sale

Please buy your pumpkins from Immanuel Church-on-the-Hill, at the corner of Quaker & Seminary, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, throughout October. All sale profits are contributed to charities (most of which are local). Also benefiting are the Navajo Indians of Northern New Mexico, whose land and labor produce the pumpkins. The annual pumpkin sale is co-chaired by Wendy John (alumni parent, former Board member, a.k.a "the Pumpkin Lady").
