Spotlight

Sunday: Jan 19

Spotlight Sunday returns on Jan. 19, when UUCA shines a light on our many Covenant Groups, which offer a safe place to explore spiritual growth and develop deep and meaningful relationships. To encourage full participation and allow participants to really go deep in conversation, groups are just six to ten members. Topics are varied and interesting - spiritual practice, forgiveness, death, aging, humanism, trust, generosity, change, forgiveness, joy, relationship challenges, appreciation, and much more. A major principle of the Covenant Group program is to welcome newcomers from the moment they join the congregation by providing a place  of spiritual nourishment and belonging. Read more at
uuca.org/covenant-groups, email Linda Serra at lindalserra@gmail.com to discuss, and come visit the tables in the Social Hall on Jan. 19!
Weekly Update: Jan 12 - 18
Turn in Guest at Your Table Donations - This Sunday

The envelopes for Guest at Your Table will be collected this Sunday.  Please give donations to the attendant at the table in the Social Hall after either service on Sunday or deposit in the collection plate during the service (with a note that funds are for the Guest at Your Table program).

TBDs Monthly Lunch - This Sunday

Start 2014 by warming up with friends at the first TBD lunch of the year this Sunday, Jan. 12, at 1 pm. TBD is UUCA's social group for all born between 1950 and 1970 (or thereabouts).  The group will gather at Osteria Cibo Rustico in the Toco Hills Shopping Center at 2945 N. Druid Hills Road.  If you're interested in TBD (or are currently a member), please join in the fun and fellowship! For more information, contact Cindy Hoffner at choffner@uuca.org.

Humanist Fellowship: The Failed War on Drugs - This Sunday

Most of the wars fought by the US since WWII have failed disastrously, with their failure exacerbated by a lack of a clear focus and the absence of an exit strategy.  It has been said that the so-called "War on Drugs" has been a disastrous failure for similar reasons. This week, the Humanist Fellowship will view and discuss a video of Michelle Alexander summarizing the conclusions of her book, The New Jim Crow, which paints a more sinister picture of a war won, not lost, by private prisons that benefit from a burgeoning population of drug arrestees, well-funded drug enforcement agencies and their corporate suppliers, and politicians trading on the hysteria that their pronouncements arouse. She shows how the War on Drugs has been used to create a caste system which condemns primarily black and brown youths to lives of legalized discrimination. And she shows how the laws passed to promote the drug "war" have served to undermine our system of justice in ways that lastingly affect us all. The Humanist Fellowship gathers Sundays from 11:15 am to 12:30 pm, and participants are encouraged to bring a donation for the food barrel.

Jesus Seminar Study Group - Jan 14
The Jesus Seminar Study Group will meet on Jan. 14 at 7:30 pm in the Chapel. They will discuss "Johannine Christianity" from Christian Beginnings by Geza Vermes.  Among other things, the group will examine how different the Gospel of John is from the synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke). Copies of study materials will be available at the session. For more information, contact Sven Lovegren at solovegren@msn.com or 404-634-7750.

Wonderful Wednesday - Jan 15

Join UUCAers every Wednesday, now through May 14, for the variety of programs known as Wonderful Wednesday. The centerpiece of each week is a community dinner held at 6:15 pm. Dinners are served by UUCA groups or local non-profits, and proceeds go to UUCA programs and other good causes.  Join us on Jan. 15 when UUCA's preschool tenant, The Learning Lens School of Early Enrichment, hosts with a menu of home-cooked pasta casseroles. After dinner, stay for Wednesday Night Worship at 7 pm in the Chapel. Interested in catering a Wednesday meal? Available dates for 2014 catering teams are filling fast, so contact Jerolyn Lowry at jlowry@uuca.org for details.
Building Your Own Theology Course - Begins Jan 15

"We do theology, not to become more divine...but to become more human."  Were you inspired by Rev. Makar's recent sermon, "God and Me"?  Then take this class!  Whether you are a new UU or long time member of UUCA, no doubt your faith has and will continue to evolve.  This is the perfect class to explore where your faith, spirituality, and theology is now. Using UU minister Richard Gilbert's study guide, Building Your Own Theology, you will explore a liberal religious theological model, your religious odyssey and develop, with the group, your own personal credo. Sharing in this process helps you clarify your faith and strengthens our community. Lay Ministers and longtime UUs Mary Ann Oakley and Kay Golan will co-lead the course.

  • Dates, Times and Location: Five Wednesdays, Jan. 15 - Feb. 12, 7:30-9:30 pm, at UUCA
  • Book: Please purchase and begin reading Building Your Own Theology by Richard Gilbert, available in the UUCA Book Store for $16.
  • Class Size:  6 minimum/15 maximum
  • Registration: Please register in advance by emailing adultregistration@uuca.org or calling the UUCA office at 404-634-5134.

Third Thursday Cinema - Jan 16
Sponsored by UUCA's Peace Network, the Third Thursday Cinema happens Jan. 16 at 7 pm in Room 210.  This month's film is Dirty Wars. The War on Terror has fundamentally changed the way the US does war. The traditional rules of engagement no longer apply, and drone strikes, night raids and targeted killings occur across the globe. Those responsible for these acts operate in secret and will never appear before Congress. The film has been shortlisted for Best Documentary Feature for a 2014 Oscar. It is based on Jeremy Scahill's book Dirty Wars: the World is a Battlefield.  Scahill traces the rise of the Joint Special Operations Command, for whom no target is off-limits, including American citizens. A $3 donation is suggested for the evening, which includes refreshments and a moderated discussion.

Dining For Women - Jan 16 and 19

The UUCA chapters of Dining for Women (DFW) will meet Thursday, Jan. 16, and Sunday, Jan. 19. This month's dinners will support the Community Development Program of the Catalyst Foundation, Vietnam. Catalyst's program educates women about human trafficking, provides vocational training to promote self-sufficiency, and protects the women's daughters from trafficking. An invitation is extended to all UUCA women to attend one of the potluck dinners. Contact Mary Crawley for information about the Thursday dinner and Emilu Bailes for the Sunday dinner.

Fiesta de Libros - Reading Returns Feb 1

Fiesta de Libros, a service project of UUCA, reopens Saturday, Feb. 1, and volunteers are needed! For those not familiar, Fiesta de Libros operates a reading room for children on Saturdays from 11:30 am to 4 pm at Plaza Fiesta on Buford Highway.  Their mission is to expose children to age-appropriate literature and provide them with books they can enjoy at home. The long-term goal is for children to develop a love of reading that they can carry into adulthood and eventually pass on to their own children. Please go to fiestadelibros.com for information and to sign up for a volunteer shift. Also look for their tables in the Social Hall between services on Sundays. To date, 3,200 children have visited the reading room and 1,800 books have been given away through Fiesta de Libros.
